Wayne...what do you think?

Post#1 » by Esohny » Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:43 am

I know, a non-Rubio thread.

What's everyone's take on our seldom mentioned 28th pick? I liked the pick for his shooting, but I'll admit that my exposure to him was mostly in the tournament. Anyone seen him play a lot? We know he can shoot, and he's a good athlete, but how's the D? Can he take it to the hoop and finish?

coachable good kid with decent SG measurables and range. Winning experience and does not mind being a role player. Ellington indeed ended up being one of the most efficient shooting guards in this draft, ranking first in field goal percentage (48%) and third in points per possession (1.04). He for example ranks 3rd in his ability to finish around the basket, behind James Harden and Jermaine Taylor, 3rd in catch and shoot jumpers, behind K.C. Rivers and Jack McClinton, third in pull-up jumpers, behind Jack McClinton and Jodie Meeks and first in points per possession in transition opportunities.Ellington's short-comings lie in his inability to create offense for himself, as he ranks third worst in isolation possessions generated behind two very poor ball-handlers in Paul Harris and K.C. Rivers, and his very related inability to draw fouls--which he did on just 9% of his used possessions. Ellington is obviously a finesse player who needs plays run for him in the half-court in order to be most effective, which means he'll definitely need to find the right situation in the NBA. Teams should not discount the skill-level he brings to the table as a pure scorer, though, as its clear that he wasn't such a highly regarded player coming out of high school for nothing. (DX)

Kid can shoot and is well coached. Good role player to have.

I love big game Wayne, and was hoping to get him at 18! but 28 yes!!!

I think if we keep rubio he will benefit so much from playing next to him.

Man you get al jeff and k-love attracting 3 guys to them, rubio creating havoc, my boy "big game" is going to be open all day long breaking hearts from 3 point land and mid-range.

I think he's a great fit for this basketball team, he will make people forget that other 2 guard from carolina......that we had.

the deal we got for Lawson was amazing. What else would you want? plus we have no roster spots.

If the trade had not been made, Lawson would not have been the choice.

Wouldn't have been my choice, but a very reasonable selection considering his game, his position and the wolves' weaknesses

Don't you think it's a little inappropriate to have an avatar of a woman taking her clothes off?

I loved the pick at 28. He is a great shooter and comes from a Championship program, sometime that makes me feel like he is more ready to play in the NBA. And he better be ready to play, because as our roster stands right now, he is our only true shooting guard. I know we will have to pick someone up, but he is going to be playing a lot.

I liked him going into the draft. But I always wondered what kept him from being rated higher. Hopefully his negatives will not be an issue on the court for the Wolves and his positives will be able to shine. Ellington for 3!!!!! Ellington for 3!!!!

He does a nice job coming off picks for catch-n-shoot.

Very nice pull-up jumper.

Fundamentally solid shooter.

One-on-one skills need more development. Seems to have the athleticism, but lacks technique. Got away with that stuff at NC - because it was NC.

I like it. Best player we could get at that position and he'll earn his minutes here.

Long term Wayne will be a good back up for Evan Turner. I am cool with a good kid who is a high eff shooter.

It's too bad he went to North Carolina, otherwise we could call him The Duke (see John Wayne)

Other John Wayne influenced nicknames----

The Searcher
The Quiet Man
True Grit
Rooster Cogburn?

Anyone else a fan of Westerns?
