Not trying to bash any Grizzlies fans here, but wouldn't Thabeet just have fallen to #5 anyway? By simply trading #2 for #5, Rubio would have gotten his cash (although I'm not sure that would be enough to make him content) and Thabeet would have been a cheaper bargain.

Hard to say. OKC had been rumored with all of Thabeet, Rubio (much lesser extent) and Harden, mainly Harden and Thabeet. Harden still may have been their choice, but can't blame Memphis for not wanting to gamble if Thabeet was their guy. I just don't like Thabeet and Gasol together at all and he wouldn't have been my choice if I were Memphis. I would have traded up for Griffin (LAC wanted Rubio) or back for Hill (we would have traded Hill + for Thabeet).

Most of my goofy inside stuff pre-draft was based on Thabeet. Those trade scenarios stalled because Wallace wanted too much. He does not want to be ripped off again so he is being unrealistic with trade value and Memphis will find that is even more dangerous.

Thanks Rev, was wondering what you had heard earlier. I actually had dug up the old post to see if you could share that with us. It sounded Thabeet based with no PG, then the draft came and look, 2 pg's. Figured plans changed, especially as Rubio dropped, still, interesting to hear about what was going on at that time/what might have been.

Mempgis could have made a killing with the #2.

#5(curry) for #8(hill) (mobley swap?)

#18 = cha pick next year

mobley could be a HUGE trading chip and im fairly sure nyk would have done the swap easy for curry.

you guys screwed yourselves by not taking curry and by taking rubio at #5. good luck with that. rubio wanted to go in the top 3 and clearly he wasn't worth it.
and another thing - if the grizzlies didn't take thabeet at # 2, it would have been evans.
and no way the grizzlies were going to trade the wolves the #2 pick for the #5 and # 18, when you guys just gave up mike miller and randy foye for the # 5. the value wasn't there, david kahn tied his hands when he gave the wizards that large of value for the # 5 pick.
and i have no idea why he used his 2 high lottery picks on two PGs.
i wish your team the best of luck, but from an outsiders prospective you guys look like you might be in trouble.
i hope flynn turns out to be great, i hope you guys are able to either have rubio play for you in the 2009/2010 season. and i hope you can move one of those two guys for value - but i don't see it happening, and i don't know if flynn and rubio can play in the same backcourt.. you guys have some tough times coming your way....

I think Sacramento made the bad move.. Rubio was their man, same way Evans was Minny's man, a lot more adapt to play with Flynn.. The choice of Evans made the domino effect happen and screw things up.

We had Rubio ahead of evans, but evans ahead of Flynn. Some people think we took Flynn to move for Evans, but I have been unable to confirm this.

rufus, your post is sloppy. 1.) Why trust Wallace to tie his shoes? I want to see a scrabble match with him and BJ Mullens. 2.) OKC was misleading everyone. That is what a good GM does. Beast/harden/rubio it did not matter.

My sources said we were planning on trading up for Thabeast. Something along the lines of 5+18 for 2, but Memphis has become impossible to deal with. Our plan was to move for Beast and then take flynn or evans, whoever fell to 6.

The most popular trade scenario was love+5 for 2+Gay. Not sure if our side turned that down or they just took it off the table. 5+18+smith was an option, but as I noted Memphis' front office went deuce on everyone.

It's interesting that if we trade #5 + #18 for #2 and took Thabeet that we still very well have gotten Rubio at #6.

Memphis would have never made a deal with the wolves with tyreke off the board, and what the heck would the Knick give the Grizzlies? You can't say David Lee - because of his status as a restricted free agent. The Knick's pick + what? would not have happened, and the Jazz? have the Knicks pick unprotected for 2010/2011....Knicks are not good trade partners for anyone right now..

The wolves have a new, talented starting backcourt this year, whether Rubio comes over or not, and in the big picture we upgraded 2 of our picks in a weak draft for better picks in a better draft and have a huge number of attractive assets. Your points aren't really impressing me.

And the fact that Wallace says something means that I assume he's wrong, and OKC would have taken Harden, since Harden was a superior prospect, and Presti is not a moron.

I think the Grizzlies actually had a great draft.
