The more I think about this deal, the more I like it. Just make it fast, before I get all attached to Wayne Ellington.
Hunter for Songalia + rights to #28FOR DEN, they're contenders and it gives them increased production and helps fill their short roster.
FOR MIN, I understand they wouldn't sell the pick for $3 mil to the Knicks, but this saves them a lot more, in the right places too:
Songalia 4,526,000 4,818,000
Ellington 836,300 899,000
Steven Hunter ($3,696,000 expiring)2009: MIN SAVES $1.67 mil ($0.9 mil TPE)
2010: MIN SAVES $5.72 in 2010 (
all added to 2010 raw cap space -- takes us over $20 mil.)
----------------------------------
MIN SAVES $7.4 mil

no, i like ellington, nothing but upside with him. without him we have no sg.
we'll have plenty of assets next summer to move songalia if we need to create cap room.

I like it, but other than Brewer we don't have anyone to play SG... if we would have drafted Green or someone in the 2nd to backup Brewer, I'd be more for it.
If we could follow that up by trading telfair to Orlando for Redick then sign me up.

I personally don't think we'll have trouble trading big for small to fill the 2009-10 roster, but winning games this coming season isn't a big priority to me. I want to gear for 2010.

It's not that big of a deal for me either, but I would like to have a young guy getting some minutes at SG behind Brewer. If we could get another SG in a trade then I would be all for it.

Me too I want Ellington to stay.

Songalia may not be exactly worthless. If Smith is moved, he might be able to help this year and next. He might even be able to play spot minutes at center -- wing span is 7'1", standing reach is 9'.05". Not terrible.

I think we've already helped POR & DEN enough. we need to help Utah.

And why is that meaningful in any way? It's not like this team has any interest in winning games right now.

He would be alright if he was making 40% of what he was making now, but he needs to go for an expiring to give us some more cap room next year.

This is a tough call. A lot people thought Ellington had mid first round value and Wolves don't have many options at SG. I don't know how much that 5.72 million helps us in 2010, is it going to be a major factor in the type of player we can get? I don't know.

I would like to keep Ellington and see what he can do.

The trade would be nice if we could get someone else to play SG for us.
I think maybe a follow-up trade with OKC of Atkins/Weaver for C. Smith/Madsen
-we get our backup SG in Weaver (who I'm personally a big fan of) and a nice trading chip in Atkins (partially guaranteed contract)
-OKC doesn't need Weaver since they got Harden, also OKC could use Smith as well.
-maybe we could then ship Atkins to Detroit for Kwame + either Summers or Daye (or for some other SF),
or maybe Atkins for Alexander and Elson in Milwaukee (to save them some more money)
or something like that to help someone save some cash and get us a young backup SF

1. I want to keep Ellington and see how he develops.
2. Can't we trade Songolia at the 2009 or 2010 trade deadline? If he shows any productivity for us this year, he'll be seen as a guy who can help a contender's bench with a short contract. Not a huge gamble, as he has SOME talent, and it's not like he's a huge contract anyway; why give up young talent to get rid of him now?

^ I agree, but first we would need to move some people(craig smith), so that he can get some meaningful minutes, to be productive.
I dont believe Ellington is our future SG. I think he can be a very good role player, like gomes, but depending on how Kahn views Ellington vs. cap space...I can see Kahn doing this deal. Kahn seems obsessed with finding "star" players and a "dynamic scoring wing." If he felt clearing Songaila's contract would help him sign one in FA or use the cap space to trade for one. He would get it done.
Its a tough call for me, I wanted Ellington chosen at #18. We need SG and we are in a position to let Wayne develop and see what happens. But if DEN said this is a one time offer, I would find it very dificult to turn down this deal.

Agreed on both counts...lets see what they can do first...Songaila had some value, if I remember correctly, a few years ago so maybe a change of scenery does something for him and we can trade him to a playoff contender for an expiring close to the deadline...I realize that WAS fans think he is garbage, for the most part, but I don't think it is a good idea to move Ellington...

Songalia's trade value is only going to go down as he languishes on the Wolves bench.
I think with the MLE and trades, we could cover the need for a SG, especially since SG is the easiest position to fill. But if we think Ellington is likely to be something really special, then this financial deal might not be prudent.
I'm just trying to get a feel for Ellington here, because the financial pay-off, with the TPE and the increased raw cap space, is good return for a "generic" #28 pick.

Wayne Ellington is a SG from North Carolina.
-Michael Jordan
-Vince Carter
-Rashad McCants
Yeah, Wayne The Rain is going to be an all-star. It's in the cards.

If we could somehow get enough cap space to sign Marvin Williams to a deal that ATL won't match, I'd be ok with trading Ellington.

Extrapolating that trend line, Ellington is going to be a ballboy somewhere in Siberia next year.
