Potential PG Mentors?

This becomes less important if we sign Mark Jackson as a coach (please not the Head Coach)

But under the assumption that we rock with both Rubio and Flynn next year...

I am not as up to date on available FA or expendable guys on other teams as some of you may be. Who can we legitimately bring in to teach these guys how to play PG in the NBA?

We have 15 guys on guaranteed deals assuming Rubio comes over. 4 of those guys are PGs. Unless you're talking a Kevin Ollie type, you don't sign PG mentors as players. You hire them as assistant coaches. Lot cheaper, doesn't take up a roster spot, and that whole 4 PGs already thing.

If Rubio comes over, I think it's guaranteed Bobby Brown is taking his perogative elsewhere. Which is fine, he's a good kid and all, but no sense in 4 PGs.

Yeah I can see that....I can also see Telfair not being on the roster anyways if Rubio comes over. Telfair doesnt strike me as someone pumped about being a 3rd string PG. It would be interesting right now to get his reaction after this draft.

Does Bobby Brown have a player option? I thought I read that somewhere. I can't see him being too pumped be here assuming Rubio played next year.

As far as roster spots, the wolves are not done, for the simple fact that their roster is so unbalanced right now. I think 2-3 big men will be gone by the start of training camp. I think Telfair or brown, possibly both will be gone.

I do agree that "mentors" are more logical when used in a coaching capacity. Mark Jackson as an assistant might be nice. Avery Johnson. Is Eric Snow ready to coach yet? Does Bill Laimbeer have PG coaching skills?

But thanks anyways for raining on my parade.

Really. Where's Terrell Brandon these days? Can't we just hire him as a PG coach? No interest in Mark Jackson unless he's an assistant, which I doubt someone with his ego accepts.

If anyone recalls the Chauncey Billups article that ESPN.com did a month ago. It stated Terrell Brandon being a great mentor for Billups. I know he has some small businesses in Portland but he would be a great assistant if he wanted to coach.

I would not be opposed to Ollie either, but I would rather have someone that was a higher caliber pg in his prime.

TB
Mark Jackson
Avery Johnson
Sam Cassell (Wizards)
Gary Payton (unsure on that one, maybe too vocal)

Esohny I like what you are thinking :)

Bobby Brown definitely takes his player option because if he doesn't, he's likely out of the league. No way anyone signs him for 800k this off-season. So he'll take it, get cut, and play in the D-League with his before tax 800k, plus the $5.00 an hour he'll make in Tulsa. ;-)

I like the idea of Brandon as a deep assistant working with PGs.

Avery Johnson will likely only accept a head coaching job for a good team, not a developing team. Mark Jackson would take any head coaching job and seems very much against an assistant's role. He's got a bit of an ego.

But would Jackson and Laimbeer be a good pairing? They add toughness and bring knowledge of the position to our two deepest positions, PG and Post.

You want a mentor not interested in minutes. Always safer to make it a coach.

Jackson will only be a head coach. I believe he has turned down asst spots.

Laimbeer is probably my top choice as a head coach. if he brought in an assistant position coach like Brandon, Snow, etc it would help a lot. Laimbeer was a very good coach in the wnba and has the league cred from detroit. Detroit also ran a smaller backcourt with dumars (6'4) and thomas (5'10)

Avery Johnson wants the atlanta job. He is not coming here.

Why does it have to be a mentor who cant get minutes?

If MIN is serious about Rubio and Flynn in the same backcourt, that leaves some minutes to be had at the PG position.

Brown and Telfair could just as easily not be here at the beginning of the year. Telfair especially could be traded or bought out(less likely).

But if MIN is serious about Rubio guarding SG's than its very possible that Brown could get some minutes at SG guarding PG's(like Flynn).

You have a good point. I'd just as soon pay Brown the minimum to play 3rd string(but play a bit of defense) than Telfair 2.5 million to do the same. Bassy has value as a backup in some situations.

depending on the character of the pg they sometimes care more about their own minutes rather than mentoring a pg. With a coach there is no question.

I think I'm on to something with the Mo Cheeks idea...

He always played in small back courts ---- w/ Toney, Hawkins...

And played with Moses --- (Al Jefferson)

He hasn't had great success as a coach but he's never had a great squad either.

I still think it will be someone Kahn is familar with coaching.

Cheeks is interesting. He was all-defense as a player. 3rd all time in steals. Mixed results as a coach, but an interesting option.

I want Cheeks as head coach, and then to steal Iavaroni from Toronto as the head assistant. Then we essentially try to recreate the 82-83 sixers.

We just need to find our Julius Erving. : )

Dr. J? Bah, that'll be easy to find. Evan Turner, although Terrence Williams would have worked, too. Too bad we didn't move up.

You are forgetting the benefit that 2 playmakers can have on a guy like Brewer. He could have a good year. of course, i am bias.

I have yet to say this, but honestly. I am so happy right now. I wanted Rubio so bad and never thought it could happen. When we drafted him I was so excited. I just hope it works out.

I would cream my pants with Brandon as an assistant kind of like Kareem in LA. Johnny Flynn could do a lot worse than to model his game after TB. I haven't seen anyone who could work a screen or a pick like TB. Only guy I have seen in the pros who would double back on picks.
