Sid Hartman: Monty Williams might be a top candidate for Wolves

The Portland assistant coach believes he is ready to lead a team, and the Timberwolves could be just the right fit.

New Timberwolves boss David Kahn has received permission from the Trail Blazers to talk to Portland assistant coach Monty Williams about his team's coaching vacancy, according to the Portland Oregonian.

Williams, 37, has been an assistant coach with Portland for the past four years.

"I'm flattered," Williams told the Oregonian on Wednesday. "I'm someone who wants to be a part of a rebuilding process. But at the same time, I'm still a Blazer. So, there's initial excitement, but in reality, nothing has changed. I'm looking forward to the process."

He might be the top candidate; Kahn is from Portland and used to cover the team for the Oregonian back when he worked in newspapers.

Kahn has made it clear that he will not have any comment on the coaching situation until he selects the man for the job. However, he has told people that former Wolves player and Toronto coach Sam Mitchell was not a candidate for the job. The name of Mark Jackson has been mentioned as a possible candidate, but the ESPN analyst and former NBA point guard doesn't have any coaching experience.

Williams, according to the newspaper, is being credited for the development of two of the Trail Blazers' young forwards: Travis Outlaw, 24, and Nicolas Batum, 20.

"I'd love to run my own program," Williams said. "Having [Portland coach] Nate [McMillan] pour all this information into me, I'd like to test out all I have learned and see if I'm ready.

"... I'm ready for what I'm not ready for. No one goes into a job ready for it. At this point in my career, I'm ready for what I don't know."

better than MJ, i guess?

For future reference, there is a recent coaching search thread. And as a general rule, nothing Sid says is deserving of a new thread.

That said, I don't know much about Monty, but he sounds intriguing.

well I don't think a experienced head coach will come here because we have basically said next year we won't win a lot games and If I'm Mark Jackson no way I take this job if they offer it to him because we might lose a lot and say were still rebuilding and the blame will get place on him and hurt his chances later.

Hopefully we don't offer the job to Mark Jackson or he turns it down.

I think these one of this guys is who we should go get Monty Williams or Bill Laimbeer

if there's any truth to this rumor I wouldn't mind having an assistant coach taking our head coach job.

on a side note: I'd like to give Casey a new attempt

words of a humble and brilliant man right there. that style of leadership is surprisingly effective imo. give this guy a shot.

try managing people my friend. it's easy to look at a boss' mistakes from your end. if you were the boss you would be a complete failure.

Damn, not a single item?

Seriously though, Devilz why the strong anti-Monty sentiments? I've only heard good things so far.

not strong anti-sentiment, I just think he's a communicator more than a basketball wiz. I'd rather go for the opposite with Thibodeaux. Its great to be able to communicate, but if a player thinks he knows more than his coach, then he's gonna do what he wants. He gets cred for Outlaw and Batum, but anybody can coach those 2, they're young and ready to listen. Especially Outlaw, those 2 have a lot in common that he wouldn't necessarily have in common w/ other players.

Casey was a McMillan's assistant too, if I recall it right.

I really wouldn't mind Monty being our coach. another guy i wouldn't mind is Curry now that he was fired by detroit. he really got the short end of the stick there. Casey getting a second shot could be a good idea too. He'd do much better with a different set of assistants who can help cover his faults better than the last time he was here since he was blamed for a lot of things that weren't his fault kind of like Curry
