I'm just curious what you guys would think of this cap-clearing move?

MIN GETS: Adam Morrison (exp) + Josh Powell (exp) + Jordan Farmar (exp)

LAL GETS: Darius Songalia + Craig Smith (exp) + Sebastian Telfair + $1.16 TPE

Lakers get an upgrade in talent for their bench, and don't have to cave to Odom's demands. Farmar seems to have lost his schwing in LA last year, and he put up worse numbers than Bassy (FG 39.1%, 6/2/2 in 18 mpg), and they've said they could use some young legs -- either a speedy PG or a big one. I would hope Bassy would be more willing to pass on a team where he knew almost everyone else on his team had a better chance of scoring. Songalia is a much better veteran player than someone like Josh Powell, and Craig Smith is even better than that. The Lakers have plenty of revenues, and a desire to win championships, so the two year deals are less painful than most teams, particularly when they give up little talent.

For MIN, the deal is financial, clearing $7.5 mil in 2010 cap space. Also, its quite possible that both players would get some minutes on the floor here. Obviously we have some need at the wings for Morrison, but I'd also contend that if Rubio doesn't come over, Farmar would be needed because the rookie Flynn and Bobby Brown can't handle the load. It may be just hype, but a long time ago both Morrison and Farmar had some upside, so while I wouldn't bet on it, a few minutes on the floor might yield positive things. We get a small TPE, and can waive Powell for under $1 mil if we wanted the roster space.

It's not bad. I'm still intrigued by Morrison as a scorer of the bench. Him and Ellington could be a nice outside the arc pairing.

Then we can call it the 3P trade: Powell, Porn-stache, and (Mr.) Peepers

I like it, I'm not to sure of the Lakers but I would love this trade.

Songalia ...... 19.8 mpg, FG 53.2%, 2.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 7.4 PPG ($4.5/$4.8)

Morrison .... 15.2 mpg, FG 36.0%, 1.6 RPG, 0.9 APG, 4.5 PPG ($5.25)
J. Farmar ... 13.0 mpg, FG 39.1%, 1.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, 4.7 PPG ($1.95)
J Powell ..... 5.2 mpg, FG 42.3%, 1.2 RPG, 0.3 APG, 2.1 PPG ($0.96)

I like it alot. I really like Powell and I think the lakers do as well, however, Songalia gives them a stronger vet off the bench for another championship run. Smith would fit extremely well with Gasol and Bynum.

Morrison is certainly worth a shot and Farmar and Telfair are essentially a wash.

The Lakers are not going to take Songalia though. Telfair is a horrible fit for them.

yea. Shrink. With LAL you cannot just look at talent but fit in the triple post/triangle offense is essential. Telfair with his lack of shooting would not fit for them. Cookie likely would not. But Songalia would.

Losing his salary would be nice, but do we really want to trade Telfair? Just think, if Rubio doesn't come over, Bobby Brown would be playing 18+ minutes at backup Point. Do we really want that? Even if Rubio does come over, it would pretty much kill any Flynn for a SG trades for the same reason.

You raise a good point. Plus, if we're going to be a running team next year, you would think that would suit Telfair quite nicely.

Rev, I threw a thread up on the trade board trying to identify teams that could still use a back-up PG, and a couple of Laker fans said that they'd like the young legs, but I can understand the issue. They are down on Farmar, so they aren't losing ground here. However, it might work better as a three-way, sending Telfair elsewhere.

Dr K, I agree with you too, and I included Farmar to help cover the minutes gap we'll face if Rubio doesn't come over. We may complain about Telfair, but at his $2.5 mil salary, we're getting decent ROI on him. I also am concerned about the rookie Flynn and third-stringer Bobby Brown being able to cover 48 mpg at PG if rubio doesn't appear. Farmar wasn't awful in previous years, he's a little taller, and his deal is only one-year, so I think it gives us flexibility regardless of Rubio's decision.

I'd agree with that. Telfair is what he is, while Farmar might have a little upside left. Again, we're going to be be terrible this year anyway, so downgrading slightly at backup PG while dropping salary in 2010 is well worth it, in my opinion.
