There seems to be two schools of thought being promoted on this board:

1. The Wolves 2 best frontcourt players are PFs (Love/Jefferson) So we don't need anymore power forwards.

2. The Wolves 2 best frontcourt players play better as centers as calculated by 82games.com so we do not need a traditional center but an athletic 3/4 to pair with Love/Jefferson.

So which one is it?
Maybe is it either or both?
What do you think?

I think the Jefferson-Love tandem can work. The only issue is going to deal with interior defense. An athletic center that can D up will provide more options against the premier big men in the league.

An athletic 3-4 wouldn't make a whole lot of sense unless if we were planning to unload some players. That would be the end of Gomes.

It seems like it's sort of both. I think we could use a strong defensive center to pick up 20+ minutes a game, but we need a major upgrade at SF no matter what.

Yea. It is both.

We need a big SF. Not really a 3/4 as much as a Small forward that has size.

We need a 3rd big man to spell Love/Al. Someone with Size is always nice, but we just need a 3rd stud big.

We just need a quality back up center. Someone in the mold of Pryzbilla, or Diop, who will cost about the mid-level and be able to come in foe defensive substitutions. I'm hoping for Alabi in the draft next year with the Bobs or Utah pick.

For a SF -- I'm more concerned offensively than defensively. I just want a player who can shoot 3's and man up and play some D.

I think Love and Jefferson can work but eventually one of them may need to come off the bench. There are plenty of minutes to go around for a Love/Jefferson/Big Defensive Center front court. It's just a matter of who plays when and who is willing to accept certain roles.

I think I understand what you mean, but I am not sure. Is Gomes a 3/4 or a small forward with size. What are some examples of SF with size?

As long as it is the best available PF, PF/C or C.

Personally, I think that the team needs an athletic, shot-blocking Power Forward to start next to Al with Love coming off the bench in a big minute 6th man role. It's not really because Al and Love play better at Center, either, but more to do with the fact that neither is quick enough to stay in front of face up big men. Adding a 7 foot Center or athletic 3/4 likely wouldn't help as much against those types of players.

In my mind, the player we would want would be one of Kevin Garnett, Anthony Randolph, Josh Smith, or Derrick Favors.

What the Wolves need is a player who is like Gomes but is better in every single way.

he's lacking the D. he has had some good defensive stretches but he's not a good defender at all. plus I think he's also not athletic enough to keep up with the fast SFs. he'd be an ideal SF off the bench type of player though.

If the issue is with the numbers:

Yes, those were the four big name athletic, shot-blocking PFs that I could think of off the top of my head. If I looked through a list of all the players in the NBA, I could probably find a handful of more guys.

An athletic 4 that would push Love to the bench would is probably the best all around compliment to Jefferson/Love. Especially if Shaq and Yao are out of the league in a couple of years. I'm starting to warm up to Derrick Favors if he is as good as projected.

If Turner proves he can play the 2 and not the 3 then the above is the best case scenario. By far.

If it is next summer, where is Pekovic?

I didn't put pekovic in there because of Khan's comment that he is another below the rim player that is redundant with what we have. I think he ends up using him as a trading chip.

So with regard to the front court you would vote for a pretty good traditional C off of the bench to compliment Love/Jefferson.

Oops I should have put Pekovic into the mix. That would mean that the Wolves have three players whose best position is center.
