New Ricky Rubio discussion thread.

Post#1 » by NO-KG-AI » Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:32 am

Lets try to keep it cleaner this time, the last one got cluttered with poo slinging and pissing matches.

Anyway, I'd like to talk about Ricky Rubio's endorsement with Gillette. He hasn't even made it to an American team, and he doesn't even have facial hair, and he has endorsement already.

Big Market=not necessary.

ALL YOUR RUBIO ARE BELONG HERE!

Oh come on. You're trying to tell me that Rubio doesn't have endorsements overseas? I'm sure he's appeared in numerous "Paella Instantáneos" commercials. For those of you scoring at home, yes, I'm assuming that they have "instant paella" en España.

Anyways, that Gillette commercial is hard to accept. I don't believe that Ricky has facial hair yet.

Ricky Rubio can grow facial hair!!! Look at my avy and tell me he can't :)

Edit: Not the thickest or best looking but more the reason for him to shave it.

Rubio has an endorsment with McDonalds as well.

This was one of the few commercials he recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0kpXRDOUOc

Now this is funny -a bit cruel as well- and speaks voices of his teams' current feelings towards him: Joventut recently aired a commercial mocking Rubio's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7edhtrffnA

By the way, I'm completely against KWSN suspension. Who is going to provide the laughs now?

Yes we do (unless otherwise indicated by KWSN ) and it is quite helpful if you ask me: less than ten minutes on a frying pan and you can eat a kind of rice with a few vegetables and even some chicken. I know it is Paella because the package says so.

On a side note, Marca is reporting that Fegan and Taylor have met at least three times in Las Vegas regarding Rubio. You probably can read it somewhere on some CBS site (that is the source mentioned by MArca).

More from Givony: Ricky Rubio's agent Dan Fegan met with Wolves' David Kahn at the Palms this morning.
NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver and Spanish agent David Carro were also in the meeting, according to Givony.

Kahn using his connections with Stern to bend teh buyout rules a little?

Several people have had a theory that they had a rules question about Henk Norel. The general idea is that they would give 1,000,000 for Rubio and Norel's buyouts, give Norel a "chance" to make the team, and make it easier to get Ricky here. I would assume if that's true, we would at least have to invite Norel to training camp to avoid getting Joe Smith Slapped.

If they try soemthing like that, they better be totally above board and in communication with Ster. Personally, I'd be leary of trying anything questionable.

As European with little knowledge about the deep NBA financial rules i have the following question.

I know that the wolves can't pay more than $500k to Rubio for his buyout but... what about if a company from Minnesota, with an owner being close friend of the Wolves front office, offers Rubio a $3M sponsorship? (paid by the wolves with that company acting as the middle man, of course hiding it).

I know that would be against NBA rules, but how easy would be to prove it if making it look like an sponsorship from a third party? At least in European soccer, merchandising, sponsorships and media rights are used a lot in contracts to help the players to pay less taxes and to hide what they really earn (that is not public unlike in the NBA).

I could see Rubio shopping at Target. AND they play at the Target Center. It's a perfect merchandising match.

The tricky part would be how the money went from the Timberwolves(Taylor) to the company that hires Rubio for marketing purposes. You'd have to do something like:

Target hires Rubio for some ads and Target doesn't have to pay their normal naming rights fees.

Food or beverage vendor that has been trying to sell their product at Target Center is finally allowed to sell their product and they hire Rubio as a pitchman.

Not sure if that would be allowed, but what we don't want is Best Buy giving Rubio a lucrative deal and Taylor sending a large check to them thereafter.

or I could be done like so.

Best Buy /Target give deal (pay buyout)
Taylor just so happens to "invest" in said company.
Although things may look fishy. It's all about proving it.
Besides maybe it's a legitimate loop hole. There's nothing in the NBA rules that disallows said team owner (not the team itself) from investing his money where he see's fit. Maybe Taylor could think with Rubio marketing Best Buy, that BB will have more sales and thus he found reason to "invest".
