Rambis Already Assembling His Staff

After meeting with Timberwolves executives, including owner Glen Taylor, Rambis was working on assembling a coaching staff in anticipation of receiving a formal offer on Thursday, sources said.

Rambis is expected to hire Dave Wohl as his top assistant, an Eastern Conference executive said. Let go as an assistant GM in Boston this summer, Wohl has a close relationship with Rambis and has nearly 25 years of NBA coaching experience. It is believed that one current Minnesota assistant – possibly Ed Pinckney or Dean Cooper – could stay to be a part of Rambis’ staff.

Also mentions that the hire should be good for the Rubio situation as Dan Fegan likes Rambis.

Dave Wohl is entering his first season as an Assistant Coach for the Boston Celtics. He was named to the Celtics coaching staff on May 20, 2004.

Wohl, who brings over 30 years of NBA experience, was most recently an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic for five seasons from 1999-2004. Prior to joining the Magic, he served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers during the second half of the 1998-99 season.

It was Wohl’s second stint as an assistant coach with the Lakers, where he spent three seasons from 1982-85 under then-head coach Pat Riley. He helped Los Angeles capture the 1985 World Championship.

Wohl was Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Miami Heat from 1995-97. Prior to spending two seasons as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Clippers, he served as a television analyst for Miami in 1991-92, an assistant coach from 1989-91 and a scout in 1988. He was head coach of the New Jersey Nets from 1985-87, whom he led to the NBA Playoffs in 1986.

Selected in the third round by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1971 NBA Draft, Wohl spent seven years as a player from 1971-78. He appeared in 410 career games with the 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers, Buffalo Braves, Houston Rockets and New York-New Jersey Nets, scoring 2,553 points.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wohl was a two-time All-Ivy League selection at guard and led the Quakers to two Ivy League titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

I hope Rambis isn't planning to use MN as a practice-round prior to the Lakers vacancy when Phil retires... other than that concern, I think he's qualified and deserves an opportunity. Who knows, maybe Phil will hang around another 10 years.

I'm not sure I understand Marc Jackson's angle on his expectation of going from TV analyst to NBA head coach ... I think he'd be a great coach if he'd put some time in as an assistant. If he had that experience, I think he would have been a unanimous choice.

Riles was a ball buster, that was not real interested in developing talent. Jackson, the Zen Master, seems to get more out of his youth. It is interesting, Kahn is strongly pushing run.

i'm not sure we have the players for the triangle, Flynn Gomes Jefferson isn't quite in the same league as Pippen Jordan HoGrant/Pippen Jordan Kukoc or Fisher Kobe Shaq/Odom Kobe Gasol. while Foye Miller Jefferson would have looked pretty darn good in the triangle with Telfair and Love being perfect utility players for that system.

he was a defensive coach. So his background had very little to do with the triangle. Our team is probably the worst set up for a pure triangle offense. Personally I would set up a motion mascot. Simple, sweet but fits.

a 3 out set would be nice with 2 big solid bodies in Jefferson and Love. just wish we had better outside shooters

Outside shooting is DEFINITELY a lacking area...but if Gomes and Ellington are in, they should both shoot 37% or better from the arc this season.

Really IMO you can have a fast tempo team with any offense.
