When do you want Rubio here

Post#1 » by cpfsf » Fri Aug 7, 2009 4:22 am

I want him later (2 years if possible). If we can get two top 10 draft picks in 2 years, well it's all the better. Plus Flynn and Rubio get experience while we get to extend our rebuilding process.

1 or 2 years, bring him over if Flynn Flops, otherwise trade him for pieces that fit around Flynn.

I (much like Rubio) would prefer he's here in the NBA right from the get-go. He's our #1 pick ... let him develop with players he may very well be with for the next 5-10 years. Plus, there are no guarentee's that he would ever come if he was to stay for 1-2 years, so I'd certainly take my chances now. I think some of you are being sold a false bill of goods in thnking he will stay there 1-2 years, develop just like we want, then come here and jump right in with all kinds of success ... .

The Rubio/Flynn duo hangs in everyones head in terms of playing time and position, but these are possibly the two best basketball players in the draft. I think they'll be okay...

I want Rubio here now, but could care less about "shutting up" Jennings.

Good poll question, and I think both sides can make a good case.

Ricky Rubio has probably gotten more national press than any of the 2009 draft pciks, even Blake Griffin. People want to see the kid play, and the younger he is, the more "wow" factor the audience gets. Rubio could change the attitude if the typical MIN sportsfan about the team, and doing it now, with McHale out, would probably make it easiest to tell them that the wolves have turned a page. And of course, Rubio will be a cash cow.

However, my preference probably leans toward seeing him here next year. I'd like to give Flynn a year, to see if he can make good on those lofty Chris Paul comparisons. Rubio might improve us a little too much, costing us not just one more high lottery pick, but actually losing the pick altogether to LAC.

I can't say I'd be disappointed if I heard Ricky was coming over today, but I think it might be better for the wolves longterm if we got him next year.

1-2 years...the more i think about it the more I want Rubio and Flynn to play huge minutes. Neither player benefits from playing the PG position 24 minutes a night. Rubio is 18 years old, he needs to play basketball.

And being the same position and playing time does hang in my head because these guys were not 4-year starters on major college basketball teams. They are young. We have the perfect opportunity to offer one of them 40 minutes a night and make all the mistakes they want. But we cant offer both 40 minutes a night(unless we are going to play them at the 1 and 2 together)

With all that said, I would be ecstatic if Rubio came over, cause as was said, I will take the guarantee of him coming to the NBA over the uncertainty 1-2 years from now. But my preference would be for him to come over in 1-2 years. Added side bonus, we delay his rookie contract a couple of years as well.

And anyways, what are we going to do with them when we get John Wall next year...:-)

Rev said it best: the fan in me wants to see him here this season but it's probably better to have him play overseas another year or two. So I punted and voted not sure.

probably best to come over now just to eliminate the possibility of future shenanigans mucking things up further

This is really simple. You want him to come as early as possible, ideally this year. You can be fine with him spending a year in some big european club, but it's not a desirable outcome. A further delay (two or three years) would be a disaster.

Every year that Rubio spends outside of the league is a wasted year in terms of his NBA development. Truth is, he has very little to learn at a european level, fundamentally he's as good as they come, lightning years ahead of his age group. Right now he needs to work on his body (strength, stamina, etc), his shooting and how he can translate his skills into NBA game.

Every year that Rubio spends outside of the league is a wasted year in terms of marketing opportunites. You need to ride the hype wave now, not wait till it's gone. And, looking at their attendance figures, Wolves need that money and publicity ASAP.

Again it's pretty simple: every year that Rubio spends outside of the league is a wasted year of his NBA career.

I'm torn...I think it is better if he stays in Europe for a year or two because he won't have the pressure to play well that much in Europe. If he starts slow here he'll be called a bust rather soon just because of the hype he did get around draft time. I'd guess that it might be better for him to stay in Europe because he can work on his game and on his body there and prepare well for the nba. If Rubio comes over this year I'm actually quite sure that he can't fulfill the enormous expectations because he has to get stronger to fulfill them in the nba...

On the other hand I'm so excited and I know he's gonna be a great pg. So I can't wait to see him in a Wolves jersey.

I've apparently missed the boat here as well ... :o I've tried to convince myself there are legit reason for him to stay in Europe just to help soften the potential blow. Can't do it even in a fictional way.

I am saying neither can fully develop splitting time playing the PG spot 24 minutes a game.

Tirion wrote:Truth is, he has very little to learn at a european level, fundamentally he's as good as they come, lightning years ahead of his age group.

Shooting is a fundamental. And I too agree he is lightning years ahead of his age group, and I dont mind if he comes over now, but I want him playing real meaningful minutes every game. Rubio stays overseas and has the potential to play in more meaningful games than he will with the wolves next year. Learning how to lead a winning team is very important regardless of which level it is at.

Kahn himself said Rubio and Flynn wont play much together. (if ya believe the Kahn Luncheon thread)

I would be willing to wait a year or two for him if he truly is set to become a star. I don't want to wait two years for a bust and I am sure Al and Twitter wouldn't be too happy with us holding as we are and not even sniffing the playoffs.

Now is the best time because it will allow him to start developing his game into the NBA style. He already missed out on some action in the summer league but if he can be back for all the preseason stuff like camp and preseason games that will be better.

I see advantages in either situation. But only if the next year he plays for Real Madrid so he gets the coaching.

I think he and Pekovic should both announce they are coming over next season. Why? That might help attract a free agent. Who wouldn't want to come if they know they are playing with guys like Flynn, Rubio, Jefferson, Love, Pekovic? That is a solid group of 5 players. If theres an upper level FA wing (Johnson?, Gay?) that we can entice to come, it would be even sweeter.

Why would Pekovic do that? He loses negotiating leverage and he offends his current team.
