How important is Ryan Gomes?

-Increased 3pt shot last year to 1.3pg 3.5atpg .372%
-Might be our best jump shooter with a 78% of his shots .452efg% 76% are assisted for 8.4
(*With Al in the post, our 2 pg's slashing or Love passing, Gomes could be the jump shot goal)
-All of this left Gomes with a 51.8 TS% which was higher than Foye last year
-He has a 15 ft/fg which was very good for this team last year. It was the best among our rotation players.
-Inside shots has a .610 efg%
-He can play the 4 in a small-ball line up and the 3 in a standard line-up.

Without a true offense or good point guards, Gomes managed to be very efficient last year. He played 82 games, he drastically improved his 3pt shooting.

What is your take? What role will Gomes play on this team next year and could we be underrating him thus far?

And you should add that he has a decent partially (till 6/30/10) guaranteed contract.

I can't wait to see Sessions drive and kick it to Gomes for 3. Having a talented PG is going to help Gomes and Love alot. Gomes will probably 2nd/3rd in points on the team. I hope he plays most of his minutes at SF this year.

Gomes is a player I would like to have on the team long term. Good character guy, and he's a very solid role player, but preferably off the bench. Still, the kind of player every team needs to be a competitive team.

I agree, having him long term certainly can't hurt us. He's extended his range every year, and he was our most consistent finisher on the break last season. The increased pace along with actual PGs should increase his efficiency.

I did not notice how much his 3pt% and 3p6 attempts/makes increased last year.

to play devil's advocate here:

he also falls between two positions on defense, i.e. will get beaten off the dribble by quicker SFs and will be pushed around/outjumped by stronger/taller PFs. that may prove him a liability in starting line-up (in some match-ups anyway).

don't get me wrong, he's a terrific role player and a very good team defender, but you need to either bring him off the bench or pair him with a great defensive player who will cover up for him at the rim.

Gomes is a tremendous asset for the Wolves...

He can continue to be a role model for the younger players
or
He can be traded to a contending team as a key player off the bench for critical minutes.

Either way it has been a pleasure to watch him the past couple of seasons...a class player and person!

Not very. He's not a starter on a championship caliber team. He's maybe a 7th best player on a good team; you'd hope he'd be the 8th or 9th best player. If the team were a body, he's nothing essential like a heart or a brain or a liver. He's something that's nice to have but you wouldn't part with in a trade that got you a liver or heart you lacked. He's like a left hand or one of your kidneys. If the team was NATO, he might be Canada.

Just because he's not important to a championship team does not make him not important to our team. We are not a championship team, we are a rebuilding team with a lot of young guys and our only other player who has proven he can get his on any given night is coming off major surgery. He's a good role model and he is efficient. On top of that he's a pretty good trade chip that we want ON the court (dead weight roster spots including Atkins/Blount/Daniels/Cardinal) AND he has a reasonable partially guaranteed contract. Importance: VERY

He's not all that efficient. And you've got to revise your definition of important.

Ryan Gomes is a 6th man on a championship team imo.

We need to keep him.

your definition of important seems to imply that no one on any team that isn't going to be a threat to win a championship isn't important. the lung of a smelly hobo may not seem like much compared to the heart of the president, but i bet that bum sure appreciates still having it.

He's a solid #7 on an upper tier playoff squad. He's a 2 way player, a great glue guy, and a high character hustle player. Put a couple of stars around him and he's a whole lot better than Derek effin' Fisher. I'd take him over Luke Walton. They won a ring last year, there aren't 6 players better than Gomes on the Lakers.

If you put Gomes on Washington, they might go from a 1st round loss to a 2nd round game 7. I'm just saying, he's got a lot of value. There really are not that many good 2 way players in the NBA. Usually it's one or the other. Get a guy like that off your bench, and you've got a big weapon in the playoffs.

I think as we progress into a playoff caliber team over the next few years that Gomes will be a very nice guy to have off the bench. I think he will be an efficient bench player because a) he doesn't need to have the ball in his hands, b) he's a good jump shooter and still improving, plus he's tall and can get his shot off very quickly while still shooting a good percentage, c) he's multi-faceted, obviously sometimes the matchups won't favor him on D, but it's not like teams are going to plan around how to take advantage of Ryan Gomes, so he should not prove to be a liability on defense much. Obviously he's not a star, but the fact that he can play off other guys so well gets to be increasingly important on better teams with who have stars that need to dominate the ball. However, if Brewer demonstrates that he can be the consistent offensive threat that Gomes is, that may make Gomes redundant (Brewer can't play the 4, but I don't think it's in the plans to have Gomes play much there anyway), especially since Brewer cannot be taken off the dribble like Gomes.

While I'm very high on Gomes, I'm not so big on keeping him. He's a great guy in his prime, we're still 3 years away. Trade him for a 1st round pick and a non guaranteed like Buckner. Since we don't really need him for 2 or 3 years, when he's going to get a nice new shiny contract, he's worth more to us as a trade asset.

Brewer in 3 years will still be younger than Gomes is today. That's the window we are shooting for, isn't it? Collect talent in years 1 and 2. Gel and add final pieces in year 3 while making the playoffs. Contend for next 7 years. That's the 10 year plan.

while I agree with people who wouldn't want to waste Gomes best years on our rebuilding team and we should rather trade him for other assets if the right trade came along, I'd love to keep Ryan as a character guy and later on as a 6th or 7th man to come off the bench. he could still get enough playing time as our main man off the bench while providing solid play. plus he has proven to be a reliable scorer in the 15-18ppg range last year when Al got hurt.

While Ryan Gomes attitude make him my favorite player on the team, I don't think it would take a huge offer for me to be willing to give him up. Trading Mike Miller and Randy Foye demonstrates that our plan isn't to hold onto players that will merely be "good," but to gamble on players that have a chance to be "great." I'd take an expiring and a pick / high upside prospect.
