Atkins, Wolves To Part Ways
HOOPSWORLD has learned that Chucky Atkins and the Minnesota Timberwolves are about to part company. Atkins, who has a partially-guaranteed deal, landed in Minnesota as part of a deal in which he and Damien Wilkins were sent to the Timberwolves and Etan Thomas and two future second round draft picks went to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, at Atkins' request, a financial settlement has been reached between himself and the Timberwolves that will result in his being waived.
Atkins will then spend 48 hours on the waiver wire, after which he can sign with any interested team. It's been suggested that the Orlando, Florida native might land in camp with the Magic, though the Miami HEAT might be a more likely destination. The HEAT have been looking for a veteran point guard and Atkins fills that bill nicely. Over the course of his career, when he's been able to play significant minutes, Atkins has been a serviceable starter, and among the better reserve point guards in the league. He averaged 13.6 points and 4.4 assists as a starter for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004-05, and 13.2 points and 4.6 assists per game as a part-time starter for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2006-07.
Atkins established himself as an NBA player while in Detroit, where he started alongside Jerry Stackhouse, Clifford Robinson, Corliss Williamson, Michael Curry and Ben Wallace until 2001-02. That's when Chauncey Billups arrived in town and emerged as an All-Star, pushing Atkins to the bench. Atkins isn't a flashy player, and won't be the guy who wins games for you very often, but he is a player who has been in the playoffs, has played with some great players, and can make a difference in the locker room. He's exactly what the Miami HEAT need to help Dwyane Wade mentor the young players they have in the mix.

If this is true (considering the source), I'm surprised that Kahn couldn't come up with a better use for the contract than just buying it out.

How funny would it be if after he clears waivers he signs with the Timberwolves.

Financial settlement? Possible he agreed to a buy-out for less than the guaranteed portion of his deal? Maybe even agreed to just be waived for free so he had a chance to catch on with another team before training camp? That way he had a little say in his own destination now.

Orlando doesn't make much sense. Don't they already have two old back ups in Williams and Johnson?
Somebody on rube chat said Rambis was on 93.7 this morning and said Daniels was coming in today and they were going to see if he was on board with being a mentor to Sessions and Flynn.
Did anybody else hear that?

So much with all the trade proposals for nothing.

Well, I'd consider the Etan Thomas trade a loss now.

There it says TWolves will pay all the salary that was guaranteed = $760.000 meaning they could have waited longer to waive him...

I thought you guys viewed Atkins as some big trading chip?
Guess Khan didn't think so.

Un-freakin' believable.
Here I was, lauding Kahn, and he's got a nice asset staring him in the face, and he doesn't use it. Atkins was the only remaining partially guaranteed deal that wasn't on a lux-strapped team.
At an absolute minimum, you trade the guy to a lux team like BOS for Scalabrine and $3 mil cash, and THEY waive Atkins.
FOR MIN: Scal $3.4 - $3 mil = $400,000 waive Atkins costs us $760,000. We save $360,000
FOR BOS: Waive atkins -- Save $2.72 x2 for lux penalties = $5.44 mil - $3 mil cash. They save $2.44 mil, and add a roster spot for a player at the vet min.
I follow this stuff as an amateur, but its a deal like this that makes me think I can do a better job. A partially guaranteed deal is a better asset to the other 15 teams in the league that are over the lux than it is to us. We have the cap room.
To me, this is worse than the Jaric deal, because at least they THOUGHT Jaric could play. Trading Atkins was a no-brainer .. cash in the bank.

True shrink. I was kind of surprised, after having read that particular headline. I don't agree with your last stance, though. Losing a pick is a minimum loss of 3m$. 3m$ > 350.000$

I would agree.
Hopefully we hear why Kahn and the FO decided to go this route. It seems that teams, Kahn has shown this (Q. Richardson). That if the player does not show interest in wanting to play here, they will look to do these type of things as a favor to the player/agent. I could be wrong, but maybe this is just a PR move to not the fan base but to other players that we treat them fairly and respect their wishes. Again I have nothing to back this up and I would have rather seen him use this to help this team then to please Atkins.

Maybe Kahn knows something we don't know? Anyway, hopefully Blount is gone too!

That's my only thought as well. I scratch your back, you scratch mine next year kind of thing. I generally agree that we should have made a better move, but this is pretty minor. Shrink is under the impression that someone would have given up a 1st round pick for his cap savings. What if he's wrong, and no one was interested in that? I have to think we could have gotten 3 mil + a 2nd rounder + a worthless expiring for 4 million for Atkins. Maybe this deal makes more sense in terms of whether or not players want to play here next year though.
Kahn already has a reputation for helping players out if they don't like their situation in Minnesota. I have to think there is some value in that coming up to 2010's free agent bonanza. Next year he sits Wade down and says "Look, we only want players who will play here. If you sign up and give us a shot and decide you're not happy here, we'll work something out, with your agent's help, with another team. But I think you'll like playing with these guys, they're a talented group and we have more talent coming in this year. And we have one of the richest owners in all of sports, he's already shown he will spend to win a championship. We won't have a 2 or 3 year window to win championships, we'll have a 10 year window the way this team is set up."

I don't know, I'm giving Kahn the benefit of the doubt at the moment. Maybe Taylor said "3 million saved this year is 4 million you can spend next year". Maybe Kahn just saw the value of everything and said "I'd rather save 3 million this year and use that money to buy a 1st round pick next year".
I thought for sure we'd have a different Wing player here this season.

I really dont like this deal at all.. I mean its nice to get cap space but i wish we could have recieved something for him..
And waiving Blount is not going to make me happy, i thought we could have recieved something for him just because he was a expiring..oh well.
What a day..i was just talking to a friend who is just a casual fan so does not understand much and i said i think we will get atleast something for him, he said atkins would be waived..And apparently my sister asked her teacher if she could call him Mr. Mclovin..

It now certainly looks like the Atkins deal was financially motivated.
We essentially sold our 2010 2nd (pick 31-35) and the PDX 2nd for 2.7M.
On a rebuilding team like ours I would have preferred to keep our own pick.
Hopefully there is no Pekovic type situation next year that benefits OKC.

Wow, what a shocker (not)
Kahn was known as a person who was good at saving his boss money. He just saved him alot of money.
But here we go with the usual wolves fan credo, one 'supposed' bad move and we get all over Kahn wfor being a **** GM.
God...
