Former NBA slam dunk champion J.R. Rider has signed with the American Basketball Association’s North Texas Fresh and arrived in Fort Worth on Thursday, according to owner Jay Bowdy.
Rider, 38, perhaps best known for his between-the-legs jam at the 1994 contest, spent nine years in the NBA, three each with Minnesota and Portland. He played one season each with Atlanta and the LA Lakers and last played in the NBA with Denver for 10 games in 2001-02.
Rider, the fifth pick overall in 1993 who averaged 16.8 points per game for his career, likely will debut with the Fresh when it opens the season Nov. 22 against the West Texas Whirlwind.
North Texas will take on the Houston Takers in its first home game on Nov. 29 at Keller Central High School.
