http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/wol ... -with-flu/Blount never came to training camp and won’t show up now. He’ll stay home in Miami but keep getting paid to allow the Wolves what David Kahn calls roster “flexibility” in case his $7.9 million salary slot can be involved in a trade between now and the trading deadline.
He didn’t end up waived like Antonio Daniels was last week because Daniels was willing to give back some money in a buyout of his $6.6 million contract so he can sign with another team (Cleveland?) once he clears waivers.
There’s not another job out there at the moment for Blount, so he’s not willing to give back any of that nearly $8 million salary.
So he’ll stay on the roster, but remain far, far away.
Kahn also sounded like he might wait right up until Saturday’s deadline before deciding in one swoop on players with contract options.

ROFL! the great part is that I think he may have more use than Daniels had and be able to latch on to a team that needs someone over 6'7". By reports from Hornets fans, Daniels had looked like he was about ready for the scrap heap. Blount can probably do whatever it is he does till he is 40 and still be 7ft tall. Hit some 15-20ft shots, grab a few rebounds and stand around and take up space.

So someone tell me if I have this right:
If CLE picks up Antonio Daniels, he'll get a vet-min deal of $1,306,455. That's nice for the Cavs because the NBA kicks in the additional $480,958 over the salary of a 2-year vet ($825,497), plus the Cavs only pay lux on the 2-year vet salary?
Now, for the Wolves, is that $1,306,455 deducted from Daniel's $6.6 mil salary from our payroll, or is the actual number something that's negotiated, and may not equal the $1.3?

If i'm not mistaken his career number is almost 5 a game. He will happily wrangle a long rebound for you. He won't go out of his way, but when you are 7ft tall and LONG, a lot of things are in your area.

hey sometimes you need to protect yourself from getting the ball bounced on your head. this is the only rational explanation I can think of when I read he has a career average of 5 rebounds per game.

Blount might have the greatest job in America. Get paid $8mil to stay in Miami and do nothing? I should have went to the University of Pittsburgh.

How much did Daniels give up in the buyout?

Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry said "nothing is imminent" on signing Antonio Daniels.
I didn't realize Daniels played for Mike Brown in San Antonio

I'm no payroll guru, but I didn't think teams who negotiate buyouts with players got any deductions from other teams who later pick that player up.

That $1.3 million is not deducted from Daniels' $6.6 million salary.
From the Larry Coon CBA Guide: wrote:The agreed-upon buy-out amount (see question number 59) is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among those seasons in proportion to the original salary. For example, say a player had three seasons remaining on his contract, with salaries of $10 million, $11 million and $12 million. The player and team agree to a buyout of $15 million. The $15 million is therefore charged to the team salary over the three seasons. Since the original contract had $33 million left to be paid, and $10 million is 30.3% of $33 million, 30.3% of the $15 million buyout, or $4.545 million, is included in the team salary in the first season following the buyout. Likewise, 33.33% of $15 million, or $5 million, is included in the team salary in the second season, and 36.36% of $15 million, or $5.455 million, is included in the team salary in the third season.
The distribution of the buy-out money is a matter of individual negotiation. Changing the number of years in which the money is paid does not change the number of years in which the team's team salary is charged. In the above example in which the player's contract is bought out with three seasons remaining, the buyout amount is always charged to the team salary over three seasons. It does not matter if the player is actually paid in a lump sum or over 20 years (a spread provision).
Basically for the Wolves purposes if Daniels agreed to a buyout of $5.6 million (he gave up $1.0 million), the $5.6 instead of $6.6 million is charged against the cap.*
Any money he gets from the Cavaliers is icing on the cake (for him), and does not affect the amount of money ($5.6 million) that the Wolves owe Daniels.
*I'm making numbers up here, I have no idea how much Daniels' buyout was but would imagine that it couldn't have been more than what he was going to earn from the Cavaliers (or another potential suitor).

It's half the difference between his new salary and the minimum for a one year veteran.

Wolves don't have 2 roster spots open to do that, and Marcus Banks' contract is not welcome. Easy pass for the Wolves.

Ugh. where to start?
1. MIN would have to drop three of their own players before they did this deal, to meet 15-man roster requirements.
2, Banks two years deal (for $9.4 mil together!) is not a good deal.
3. Banks costs us cap space in 2010.
4. Banks has a bad history here.
5. There's nothing in this deal to warrant using an expiring and giving you three roster spots.
