ESPN'S Future Power Rankings (2010-2013)

22. Minnesota Timberwolves | Future Power Rating: 426

PLAYERS MANAGEMENT MONEY MARKET DRAFT
170 (21st) 47 (26th) 123 (8th) 19 (28th) 68 (7th)

The Timberwolves' roster and its potential might have been the hardest to rank of any team's, because so much of its future is in flux at this very moment. With Ricky Rubio in Spain for an indeterminate time, Al Jefferson still recovering from an ACL injury and rookie Jonny Flynn having only a few games of NBA ball under his belt, it's hard to know what to make of their future just yet. Management was another iffy area. New GM David Kahn has been on the job for only a few months, and while he seems far more enlightened regarding the salary cap than Kevin McHale, his predecessor, was, we've yet to see whether any of his moves have worked out or not. The big negative dragging the Timberwolves down in this category was owner Glen Taylor, whose reputation took a beating as a result of McHale's inexplicably lengthy tenure. But the Wolves can count on having a good salary-cap situation going forward. Minnesota will be well under the cap next summer and has all but completely expunged the onerous contracts McHale saddled the team with during his ruinous reign. Additionally, Minnesota should get help from the draft. Though the Wolves owe the Clippers a future pick that could prove to be a high lottery pick, they own a pick from Charlotte with roughly equal terms. The Minnesota market will hold them back in free agency, however. The long, cold winters are a major drawback for players, as is the franchise's current rebuilding program. To date, the team hasn't done much to offset the negative perception.

No offense to you for posting it cpfsf, but that's about the most useless analysis/ranking I've ever seen. I thought preseason power rankings were bad but power rankings looking out several years? Seriously? They basically admit in the Timberwolves section that they are just making wild-a** guesses.

I agree. ESPN has continued to do this to us. It's no different than the incomplete grade they continue to give us after the Love-Mayo trade and the draft pick-Miller/Foye trade. They don't know whether or not to bash Kahn, but reserve the right to do so if he fails and praise him if he succeeds.

from hollinger in the Chat - about future power rankings:

question: I was surprised to see the Wolves so low considering all their young talent, money, flexibility, and draft opportunities. Are the Twin Cities that unappealing? Does Kahn deserve a 26th out of 30 so early on?

John Hollinger: The problem is that we weren't just rating Khan. Minnesota's owner is a big negative, their coach isn't exactly winning rave reviews thus far, and they stll have a lot of dead wood from the previous regime left over there. I like his moves thus far, but we really haven't seen the end-game yet. And when you say all their young talent, you're basically talking about four players -- Jefferson, Love, Sessions and Flynn. Brewer is a role player at best and I haven't seen anything from any of the other guys to get my blood pumping.

Sure the OP wasn't taken off a troll's post on RealGM? I trust the players more than some idiot at ESPN's view of Minnesota.

I agree with the Glen Taylor stuff. That guy has really screwed us. He seems a lot more hands off now though.

Here's the official C.lupus future power rankings for 2013. I used some serious statistical analysis (i.e., random number generator) to come up with this scientific ranking. If you want complete reasoning for each franchise, become a C.lupus Insider. It only costs $2.50 per month.

2 Los Angeles Clippers
3 New York
4 Philadelphia
5 Houston
6 Milwaukee
7 Denver
8 Chicago
9 Atlanta
10 Cleveland
11 Charlotte
12 Golden State
13 San Antonio
14 Minnesota
15 New Orleans
16 New Jersey
17 Orlando

I'd love to be able to come back to this in 2013 and see who is more accurate.

Honestly, our franchise history gives them no reason to even consider projecting us higher.

Wow. That's less than half the price of the "other" leading brand of Insider.
