Caron Butler on the Block?

Post#1 » by shrink » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:29 pm

Its just a thread from the Trade Board, but nate33 is one of the most astute and realistic posters in RealGM. Since he's one of the guys we discuss occasionally, I thought I'd bring this over for those that are interested.

Agreed. It's looking like Butler and Arenas are going to have problems co-existing in Flip's system. I think Washington would consider trading Butler for the right pieces.

Fernandez must be included in any potential trade. The trick is to work out the filler to make the salaries match.

Butler for Fernandez + Blake + Outlaw would be fine.

Butler for Fernandez + Pryzbilla would work, but it leaves Portland thin up front.

Butler for Fernandez + Webster + Outlaw/Blake would also work.

In my mind Flynn = Fernandez, plus MIN could also add incentive by creating a TPE for a WAS team that's well over the lux. Here's a deal that would probably be fine with WAS, but I think I'd pass on:

MIN GETS: Caron Butler + Mike James (waived)
WAS GETS: Jonny Flynn + Brian Cardinal + Damian Wilkins

WAS cuts $3.15 mil, so since they are over the lux, they save an additional $6.3 mil, and Butler's $10.8 mil mil would be off the books next year. Butler would help here a lot, and it'd allow Sessions to start, but personally I'd rather stick with Flynn and gamble on the cap space.

I'd rather keep Flynn, maintain our high draft pick status, and sign a FA or 2 this offseason

Yep, and add to that Butler is 29 years old and probably wouldn't be too happy stuck in a rebuilding situation.

I'd rather trade Al for him, honestly.

Any chance (if any) of Joe Johnson just goes out the window. We put all our eggs in one basket. When I say that I mean our roster is pretty much set and Caron Butler wouldn't be able to lead our team to anything. I should also note that Butler missed a combined 58 games in the last 3 years (not including this year). And of course we have the second worst record in the NBA (blast you NJ) and this trade would make us fall in the draft. However, I would argue it's a fair trade in terms of value. I would rather make trades to improve NYK with players like Wilkins or Pavlovic so Utah doesn't get John Wall (hopefully Iverson will improve their team).

If it's cap space for him, then I'm game. But Flynn + cap space doesn't make sense at all.

I think Caron Butler is one of the better players in the league. The team he played on in Miami with Wade and Lamar Odom is my second favorite team ever.

I would cherish the chance to get his athleticism on this team. He also moves pretty well on offense from what I remember. Flynn would be the perfect guy on this team to trade, his value (at least on this board) has hit the roof.

I bet we'd have to give Wash more, but if not then wooo!

I can make the numbers work with Sessions,

A more experienced, low-priced guy behind injury-prone Arenas might make sense.

MIN GETS: Caron Butler + Mike James (waived)
WAS GETS: Ramon Sessions + Mark Blount + Oleksy Pecherov

This saves them a bit more, $3.31x2 = $6.62 mil

I don't see how Flynn = Fernandez? Since he specified that Fernandez must be included I think that is the type of player he needs - a tall shooting guard with an outside shot, not another point guard. The "value" of the two might be the same, but that's all that matches. I don't think the wolves have a guard or SF that would interest Washington, especially as the lead piece for Butler.

Same here. Al for Butler and Blatche(or McGee if they would) looks good to me.

McGee looks good too...Blatche is too thug-ish! I like my rappers that way, not my team.

I agree. Blatche doesn't seem like a guy the Wolves would seek out. I just didn't want to only write McGee and have a Wizards fan come by and freak out. They love the guy, like you and D.Jordan.

those 2 studs are averaging 5 pts and 3 rebounds...combined. We should be able to get them both for our extra mediocre 1sts if we wanted

I guess I don't know Washington's team THAT well...but doesn't that perfectly describe Mike Miller?

Blatche is averaging 14 and 7 and almost 2 blocks a game...not stellar, but give him a little credit.
