Celtics owners have said the league is doing better financially.

ME: so maybe the cap is higher than initially projected last summer. maybe around $54 million rather than $50 million

Celtics Owner Claims NBA Posting Better Financials Than Expected

Nov 19, 2009 11:17 AM EST
From what information Celtics' owner Wyc Grousbeck has deciphered, the NBA’s financial state is uneven. Commissioner David Stern has said that half or even as many as 20 of the 30 teams are in debt.

“Financially, not every team is very happy this year,’’ Grousbeck said. “The league is posting results that are better than I probably thought they would be, leaguewide, but on the other hand, there are still some trouble spots.

“It isn’t the happiest picture; it isn’t the best picture I can think of. It could be better. It definitely could be better leaguewide, and we’ve got some issues we need to address.’’

With no intention of making a major trade this season, Kahn believes the Wolves could be as much as $20 million below next year's cap, which has yet to be determined.

It doesn't sound like Kahn plans on making a deadline deal. That's sort of what I thought, but others here might be disappointed.

He said he doesn't intend to make a MAJOR DEAL. But I think there will be more smaller deals to clear cap space... Gomes is probably gone. If Brewers offense doesn't show improvement he's probably gone also....

Thats $8 million more available for free agents next summer. We have about $12 million now, so thats his $20 million I"m guessing.

Well, yeah, but I think some posters here were expecting us to trade our expirings at the deadline for major player.

I believe he still could trade expirings for a major player, if he felt he could get a great YOUNG player as good or better than he could get in free agency.

But thats not what he is expecting, so he plans to go into free agency with a ton of money. He could get one SUPERSTAR - like Lebron or Wade or two very good players.....for say $10 million each.

The next 12 months will be interesting.

I'm just guessing here but it could be that as of now he doesn't expect to make a deadline move but if for some reason there's a possible trade involving a young stud who could fit our needs and it involves our expiring contracts, I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate to use it.

but as I said, I'm just guessing.

Franchise21 is right. This is disappointing. I just don't understand where Kahn comes off saying that when he should know full well that salary space is a very competitive thing right now. How does he just think he's gonna get it magically!?

Shrink or someone else who knows...what's our salary at right now?

35,170,205 next year with the cap for 2009 being 58.7 mil. I guess we already do have 20 mil in space. My bad! U can ignore that last post.

We really don't have that much though when you factor in a Rubio cap hold close to 3 mil, 1st round pick cap holds of 3-7 mil, minimum player cap holds of .47 mil for each roster spot short of 12 players, etc. I had it computed not that long ago based on what we did with Gomes, Brewer, & Pecherov. If you look at the post on whether we pick up Brewer and Pech options, you can probably get a little closer. I believe we'd have to waive Gomes and eliminate 6-7 mil more salary for 2010 to get to 20 mil in cap space, but since the cap isn't set yet, this is all guesswork, and Kahn's statement is a little meaningless. I'm sure he could Waive Gomes and trade some of Brewer, Sessions, and Hollins for future assets if he really wanted to and get to around 20 mil though.

The $35 million is not counting Rubio or signing draft picks next year. Adding Rubio, makes it $38 million. A top 4 draft pick adds another, approx $3.5 million and one other pick [I'm assuming we only get one of charlotte and utah] adds about another million so thats $42.5 million.

It also assumes the salary cap does't fall much from this year. The expected range for salary cap next season is $50 million to $55 million.

I'd hope, at least, that Kahn would have accounted for those things. If Kahn expects as much as $20 million, I foresee more moves to free up cap space. Both Gomes and Brewer, have value for a team chasing a championship at the trading deadline. They should be relatively easy to trade. Gomes is only guaranteed $1 million per year after this season. Brewer is only contract for one season beyond this one. [You could also substitute Sessions for either Gomes or Brewer if you prefer. All three have conracts for about $4 million.]

Kahn kinda gave away our game plan then didn't he? Hope that doesn't piss other teams off and start fighting for salary space, cuz that could be trouble.

Hopefully once Jefferson gets back to full strength and can showcase his talents, we will trade him, and the result will be a star-type player who is better at passing that can flourish in Rambis' system.

Not kidding.

I still hold hope that he is. I think he is bluffing. I was told about a month ago to expect a possible deal in dec/jan. Something involving Sessions/Cardinal is very possible.

I think Kahn isn't being counting everything. Here are the numbers I've got (.. even with Gomes dealt)

$13,000,000 Jefferson
$3,964,320 Sessions
$3,703,472 Brewer
$3,638,280 Love
$3,192,000 Flynn
$2,333,333 Hollins
$1,078,800 Ellington
-----------------------------
$30,910,205 7 Total 2010 Guaranteed Salaries

The salary cap won't be determined until next summer, but the average of the projections I've read is about $52 mil, so these 7 contracts put us at about $21 mil under the cap.

However, there's a lot of things that need to be added:

$2,812,200 Rubio Cap Hold
$4,500.000? Picks that are conferred (let's estimate MIN ($3) + 1 other ($1.5)?
$2,300,000? Roster spots cap holds to mean minimum roster size
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$9,612,200 more

Total estimated cap hold: $40,522,405

Total estimated cap space: $11,477,595

Al Jefferson $13,000,000
Kevin Love $3,638,280
Jonny Flynn $3,192,000
Corey Brewer $3,703,472
Ramon Sessions $4,000,000 estimated
Wayne Ellington $1,078,800
Ryan Hollins $2,300.000 estimated
$30,912,552

$34,929,232

we are somewhere in this range w/o Gomes so subtract $3,703,472 brewere contract. It is tought to tell where we are at because things can change so quick. Where are draft picks are? how many picks we have? do we trade Rubio? Do we trade AL? How does this affect the cap ext who knows

As I said previously, Kahn must be assuming we trade away, Gomes (which you included) and either Brewer or Sessions (or maybe both). He also might be assuming a slightly higher cap number, maybe $54 million.

Jefferson 13.0
Gomes 4.2
Sessions 4.0
Love 3.6
Flynn 3.2
Brewer 3.7
Hollins 2.3
ellington 1.1

Rubio 2.8

Total 37.9

#4 pick in the draft 3.6
Utah pick - 1.0

Total $42.5 if Cap is $52.5, we have $10 million. If $54.5 we have $12 million

To get $20 million, we have to trade 2 of Gomes, Brewer, Sessions.

All he is saying is we could be $20 million under. He's just speaking hypothetically. I wouldn't read anything into this.

Or trade Al Jefferson for expirings

Ya I see no chance of us getting to 20 mil under. NO CHANCE!
