McHale versus Rambis

I was happy to hear when McHale lost the title GM (the damage was already done), but I'm still not a fan of him being relieved of his coaching duties. The players loved him and I could watch a game and not feel embarrassed for them. It seemed like Taylor only felt the we could start over if McHale was out of the picture. Yet we obviously deserve our current record. We played like a true 1-15 team this season. We are as bad as our record shows.

Here's what the players said (...and tweeted) after finding out McHale wouldn't return as coach.

Al Jefferson
I was more shocked, disappointed, hurt.

Mark Madsen
McHale will be sorely missed. Kevin McHale is a great coach. I'm a little bit surprised by this news and I was hoping to play for him next season and I guess that's not going to happen now.

Kevin Love
Today is a sad day.

As much as I liked Kevin Mac as coach, there is just now way he and Kahn could have had a functioning relationship.

I think Kahn has done well with his moves since taking over. There was a move or two that was lateral, but I dont mind the moves one bit. For me, Kahn has until next offseason to make his mark on the team. IF at that point we havent significantly improved the talent on the roster, than I think thats cause for concern.

As for Rambis, he took over a team that was built on salary cap flexibility. He is currently starting a rookie and two guys coming off major knee surgery. I think we need to give him sometime before declaring him worse than McHale. Let's not forget that Mchale had losing streaks of both 8 and 12 games with his full roster. And then also went through a 9-23 stretch to end the season after Jefferson got hurt. I think we are understating the problem if we blame our past couple of years on either McHale or Rambis. From top to bottom our current roster is one of the worse in the league.

McHale had a healthy Al, Love, Foye, Miller, Smith, Telfair. We have none of them this year.

For many reasons already discussed in previous threads, once the decision was made to demote McHale from the GM position, he had to leave. It wouldn't matter who the next GM was, it would have resulted in a dysfunctional front office.

Of course, I do wonder why Rambis is starting Flynn... was there any reason to not give the nod to the more experienced (but still young) Sessions once he was acquired? Flynn looks like he could become a good player, but he was a bit of a reach at pick 6, certainly he hadn't proved himself in college to be a walk on starter in the NBA?

Rambish would be a good centers trainer with Ettore Messina(*) as head coach.

(*) Messina is the best basket couch of the world. He is working in Spain now for Real Madrid, but don't exist buyout problem.

I can't agree here. We are worse than our record shows.

Jennings is over-rated hes had some worse games than flynn has as of late
just cause he had a few good games it doesnt mean hes gonna be a great player, charlie v had a 46 point game rookie year and hes not that great
Flynn could be playing a lot better now too but rambus doesnt want him to score he wants him to learn the triangle

I agree, and I don't think we should dismiss that McHale was a pretty good coach with some teams that previous guys couldn't get to play for them.

I do have to admit that I'm getting less patient that Rambis is trying to force an offense on us that isn't geared to our most productive player.

...because running an offense roughly 20 percent of the time is really forcing it on us..

The whole triangle controversy is so overrated. If the triangle was our main offense, then why haven't we traded Gomes for Walton yet...?

Salary

Maybe you're right, and I'm just looking for excuses, but I've never seen the team this lackadaisical on defense. Is it because of the hard learning curve on offense that makes them let down on defense? Its more than them just being bad.

I know a lot of people feel that Rambis has a disadvantage with the roster because it doesn't include guys like Love, Miller, and Foye. True, but I checked the 2007-2008 roster when Wittman was coaching and it consisted of Brewer, Bucker, Doleac, Foye, Gomes, Green, Jaric, Jefferson, Madsen, McCants, Ratliff, Richard, Smith, Snyder, Telfair, and Walker. We finished the season 22-60.

It seemed like McHale was a guy the players really liked playing for. Even if the team wasn't the most talented, they still played hard. He simplified the game to address the teams strengths.

Rambis doesn't seem like that guy so far. I'm not bashing his style, but it is different. Rambis has a roster is weaker than the one McHale had, yet he is running a more complex offense. I prefer coaches who know what the team is good at, and play off of that. Maybe the team will come together and finally get the offense after a full season, but if they don't I don't really want to stick with it (the triangle portion anyways). There are other major differences between the 2 coaches as well. I don't think McHale would've had a 10 am practice on Thanksgiving.
