What does Gomes need to do to be worth his $

The comment has been made by many, (including myself) that Gomes is not playing worth his contract value for next year. We won the Denver game largely due to a great performance from Gomes. While it is not expected he can do that every night, I am curious what kind of numbers would you need from Gomes in order for us to believe that Gomes is worth his contract next year.

1.) What kind of numbers

2.) Does he need to solidify himself as a starter, or can he just be a decent 6th/7th man talent as he is now?

Right now I think he needs to be a solid starter. If he was on a contending team then he would be awesome off the bench but we need more. I think we need him to be in the neighborhood of 15 PPG 5 rebounds every night. If he could bring that I would be happy. This team needs players that are reliable on both ends of the floor.

He just needs to be consistent wit his effort and be a team player. He needs to stop trying to create his own offense from the perimeter, that's just not part of his game.

He would be worth his $ on another team, just not this one where our cap space is a more valuable asset.

Wow, They showed an interesting stat tonight during the game.

In his time with the wolves, when Gomes scores 20+ the wolves are 15-14, when he scores 10-19 they are 26-66 (.283) when he scores 0-9 they are 7-53 (.117)

Regardless of your view on Gomes, this shows our need for a scoring wing player.

15-5 is a lot of production for a guy making $3.87 .. that's more like MLE money.

15-5 on a good team might be. We could insert just about anyone on our crap team and we should get 15-5 given starters minutes.

That'd be 75 PTS from our $18 mil of starters .. an expensive bench should be winning us lots of games.

I don't care if he's worth the money, that's a shrink-influenced statement. Gomes is a fine player as a forward off the bench. He's inadequate as a starter at either forward spot. At any price.

There ought to be a warning label, and something about operating heavy machinery .. like an abacus.

Oh, and Dr. K. I was trying to make a joke, then got distracted at home and forgot the "but seriously folks ..!" bit.

Personally, I think Gomes is perfectly paid for his NEXT job .. that as a sixth/seventh man off the bench on a contender. Its not that Gomes salary is wrong .. its that he shouldn't be starting on most NBA teams. I'm glad he got the contract he did, and we didn't throw money at him because he was our starter.

A random sampling of players not on rookie contracts that make around $3-4 million (got salaries from HoopsHype...maybe that's not the best):

Grant Hill -3.0
Ronnie Turiaf - 4.1
DeShawn Stevenson - 3.8
Brandon Bass - 4.0
Brian Scalabrine - 3.4
Kurt Thomas - 3.8
Charlie Bell - 3.6
Carlos Delfino - 3.5
Rasual Butler - 3.9
Chris Andersen - 3.6
Antonio McDyess - 3.0

Contract length aside, how many would you trade straight-up for Ryan Gomes? Unless an extra $4 mill prevents the Wolves from signing a top-tier free agent, I wouldn't consider Gomes' deal to be a burden.

+1. Gomes isn't the issue, he is what he is. Remember when the Lakers were gifted... er, traded for Pau Gasol? Lamar Odom went from being the team's 2nd best player to 3rd, and he suddenly looked so much better?

The problem isn't that Gomes is overpaid (as shrink points out, he's actually paid fairly by production.) He's miscast. He's not good enough to be the 2nd option on an NBA team. If he's a role-playing starter or 6th or 7th man, fine.

He really needs to increase his Gomes% and Gomesing. He is currently 8th and 14th, respectedly.

But really, who is he behind leaguewide? From NBA.com:

GOMES%
1. Kobg Omesant
2. LeGom Ejames
3. Dwight Howgomes
4. Shagomes O'Neal
5. Vladimir Radmonovic
6. Gomey McGrady
7. Kevin Gomesett
8. Ryan Gomes

Nothing to apologize for there, except maybe for Radmanovic. He's a scrub, no doubt, but you know how some stats favor players in unrealistic ways, like how Carl Landy has a better PER than Tony Parker... doesn't make him a better player.

Trent, if you look at WoG (Wages of Gomes) I bet you his adjusted gomes % isn't nearly as good.
We should trade him for Rongo.

he is playing very well lately. But consistency will always be his issue.
