PHI - MIN

Post#1 » by shrink » Thu Dec 24, 2009 3:03 pm

I think this one has been floating around .. I thought it was worth discussing, seeing how PHI fans seem to be realizing finally that Dalembert must go:

Dalembert + Philly's pick for expirings.

Dalembert is $13 mil next year, plus he has a trade kicker, so I'd be thinking more like $14.5 mil. MIN destroys their 2010 raw cap space and sits on the sidelines of one of the biggest times for financial flexibility ever, paying $18 mil or more for the package next season. And Dalembert is perhaps the dumbest player in the NBA (but what a smart agent!). However, the Wolves need to gamble on getting another ticket in the John Wall lottery.

It'd save PHI at least $24 mil in 2010-11.

$16+ in salary
$3.6 in lux penalties
$4.4 in lux share
$24+ TOTAL SAVINGS

At some amount of money, a price is reached for picks, even in the lottery. In the NBA, teams pay $3 mil for late 1sts. MIN paid $2-3 mil in cap space for your Top 16-protected UTA 1st last year. Is $24 million dollars legit?

Anyway, I expect every PHI fan to reject this offer, but you want someone to make a bid on adding $13 mil to their 2010-11 payroll, there's a bid. I'd suggest though you just eat Dalembert and endure the lux next year.

Its kinda tempting, because their pick will be so terrible, I would only do it once we know we'll be getting a top 5 pick. Then we could take Turner and Henry/Aldrich. Then Dally expires next season? We sign someone in that class, or use it elsewhere.

Pg-Flynn-Sessions
Sg-Turner-Ellington
Sf-Brewer-Gomes(Henry?)
Pf-Love
C-Al-Dally-Hollins(Aldrich?)
Plus we'd still have Utah, and Charlotte's pick, with Pekovic and Rubio.

I'd do it, but I don't think Philly does. A top 6 pick is too much for a team in a Philadelphia to give up for one year of salary relief.

Scenario 1: Wolves overpay for Rudy Gay
Scenario 2: Wolves overpay for Dalembert, gain additional top 5 pick, have financial flexibility in 2011.

I'd do this deal. Not sure how bad Philly needs the cap space...

I've got that sneaky feeling when I look at the standings that Sixers are going to win the lottery and get Wall. Iverson is probably retiring and they are getting the next big thing coming to nba.

There's no way Philly does this. After the lottery, sure, but not before then.

That's why I mentioned adding the Bobcats pick. It would help soften the blow a little, and for Philly, if they don't get it this year, it improves in the following years. Without it, I think Philly declines. With it...maybe. Financially it seems like a no-brainer.

The Wolves pay the price in losing their 2010 cap space. But they DO get a third big that will help them defensively. I think Dally is top 5 in blocks, and a new team with a new coach may increase his production.

To me the 2010 market is small for the Wolves. It's basically Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson...I can't think of too many other guys in reach, other than working a trade in the off season. 2011 however..

Jamal Crawford- He is older, but still looks pretty productive to me. Might be a good pickup at the right price
Joakim Noah- Restricted
Carmelo Anthony- Unlikely
J.R. Smith
Tayshaun Prince- See Crawford
Shane Battier- Good defensive guy off the bench
Al Thornton- Meh..Not too many are keen on the guy
Wilson Chandler- Restricted
Jeff Green- Restricted
Thaddeus Young- Restricted
Leandro Barbosa- Good 3pt shooter
Caron Butler

This list may be outdated, but there are a number of decent guys to choose from, all the while building our young players, and working on other deals using our assets.

If you believe Stern fixes the lottery, PHI makes the most sense:

TV Market Size

1. NY -- traded its pick
2. LA -- just got one .. 2009 lottery winner
3. CHI -- just got one .. 2008 lottery winner
4. PHI -- ???

Dang .. I just scared myself.

There's also the Brookly/NJ nets to worry about

Thanks. Now I'm terrified.

We should ask NJN to subsidize PHI trading their pick to us, to guarantee Stern doesn't consider giving them John Wall.

I agree that Philly would want to move Brand. But Brand's contract is much more harmful. So lets try this out.

Philly sends Brand, Young, pick

Mn sends

Blount+Cardinal+Sasha+Stewie+Utah pick (or Char if they push)

Mn goes for broke. We drop out of the FA race big time. We add a dynamic young SF and a top notch draft pick.

Philly earns instant cap space for a nasty contract. Just for the purpose of being ironic we send them back the utah pick they sent to us in order to get Brand.

I wouldn't mind Brand, all that would be expected out of him was 2-3 blocks a game and to play the minutes Love/Al don't. He's definately overpaid, and not the 7ft'er we've hoped for but now that I think about it, I'd rather pay for him and hope he can get back to playing defense than overpay Gay and hope he can play a team game and play defense. Add in Young and thats double bonus.

I think its too many longterm dollars locked into the same position. And if MIN is taking on $50 mil of anyone, they deserve more than Thad Young and a pick.

that pick and our pick will be going to the backcourt, for sure, where there is quality help available in the early picks. I may be just projecting homer-ism. but a good 2-way backcourt player and a bigman who plays defense gives the Wolves a good set of rotation players and makes them dangerous and playoff bound.

I think you're underestimating how bad of a contract Brand is. He's over 30, has 3+ years of a max contract left, is currently producing 13 and 7, and is an absolutely terrible fit.

Thad Young and a top 10 pick is a pretty good haul, but I don't know we'd do with Brand.

I agree that Brand's contract would be a pain and would take us out of the free agent market, but you are bringing in a very good young prospect in Thad Young (Is he much different then gay?) and a likely top 5 pick.

Brand is a shell of his former self, but he can play the craig smith role.

I would do it in a second.

I love Derek Fisher's expression at the end of Brewer's dunk in Foye's avatar
