What's with Gomes?

Has anyone else noticed that Gomes is very lethargic and/or uninterested during entire games this season? Last night was another example - two of his fouls were very stupid "oh am I supposed to guard that guy" fouls. If he would have been paying attention to begin with he should have seen what was happening and wouldn't have had to wrap the guy up.

I have liked Gomes since he first traded to the Wolves. But after about the first 10 games this year he has acted very differently than in the past. I don't see much of players overall attitude and reactions on T.V. However, when I am at the home games I have watched him walk slowly in and out of games as if bored, sigh repeatedly and look disinterested often staring off into the crowd during most of the timeouts. Ocassionally he will encourage someone but not very often.

Yep, I know we are losing often and he is not starting yada yada yada. He was doing some of these things even before he got hurt. I think he just needs to pull up his big boy shorts and play ball. I don't think he has bought into what Kurt or Kahn is selling.

Anyone have any other opinions about Gomes?

This is the way he is ... pre-Kahn and post-Kahn. Harmless good ole boy, but I hate watching him play.

I've always felt the same way. He has talent, but his head is rarely in the game.

He had a two-week span where he averaged over 20 PPG, then a bad game and then the sprain. Now he's coming off the bench, for the umpteenth time in his career, on a team where the starters often put the team 10-20 points behind.

I have been on the..."I hate Gomes" bandwagon for awhile. I'm just tired of seeing him on the team I guess. Brewer and Ellington have outperformed him by far lately and he just isn't impressing me at all. Can't make his open shots, won't defend, rebound. Trade him..

pretty much. he lost his starting spot (undeservingly) and that's affected him.

Gomes is having a pretty solid year for us, I mean for you guys, definitely not the biggest problem on the team. I'd say the biggest problem is the PG spot just because nothing was really expected from the SG/SF spots, but that PG duo was supposed to be paying big dividends and should be the 3rd and 4th best players on the team. They've had their moments, but really they don't stick out from the crowd too much overall.

I thought he looked disinterested to start the year, then had a few weeks where he looked like things were really clicking for him, until he got hurt. Now he looks disinterested again.

Hope he'll return to the starting five and find his game. May be winter or Christmas affects on him badly.

I don't know why he couldn't start over Wilkins, what with Wilkins being legitimately useless and not at all wanted for post-2009 purposes, whereas Gomes has at least a chance of sticking around.

He did the same thing last season. He was inconsistent to start the season, then stepped up and became a really consistent performer. I agree Wilkins shouldn't be starting, Gomes was beginning to look good before the injury and Wilkins has been scrappy. Given time I think Gomes could still be a solid long-term rotation player.

His 20ppg weeks came when he was playing power forward. And since he can't start over Love and isn't nearly as good playing small forward, it's kind of hard to justify starting him.

When Wilkins and Brewer are both only shooting 20% from three, it's not so hard to justify.

It is when he's a bigger defensive liability then Wilkins. Add to that what the others have said about his disinterest and it'd be hard to even find him playing time. It's a shame because he's probably a better shooter then Wilkins.

Which reminds me, has Tucker had any game time yet? I know he got activated a few games ago but I'm not sure whether he's actually seen any time on the court.

No, the stretch happened mostly with Love back in the lineup. It was a 6 game stretch, 4 of them with Love back in the lineup.
The difference in defense between him and Wilkins is pretty negligible as well. Wilkins has the reputation on him because he's a hardworking vet without a standout offensive skill, so people tend to assume that he must be a plus defender.

Very solid game from him against the Pacers. 15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Love was there, but it was just after he came back from injury and Gomes was starting at power forward. They even had an article about how he matches up better with power forwards then small forwards because he's quicker then them and can shoot the ball or take them off the dribble.
