Gomes for Ty Thomas?

Post#1 » by ChazzleDazzle » Thu Feb 11, 2010 11:43 pm

Seems like the kind of low risk/high reward that might pay off for us in the long run. Thomas obviously hasn't come close to living up to his billing, but he's still young, and has the athleticism that the team is lacking.

Bulls get a player that can help them this year, and that they have locked up long term if they want, or they can void his contract after this year if they think they've got a shot at two max free agents.

I could see us having to throw in a late pick to make them bite, and it further depletes our already poor 3pt shooting, but I think I'd be willing to take the risk...

Thoughts?

Chicago wants cap space and a pick, not Gomes.

Has TT proven he's worth cap space and a pick, though? I think Gomes for TT is fair but Chicago probably doesn't.

I would do it if Love hadn't been moved to the bench. As it stands I don't think there's much point in getting another power forward.

It's been reported that they've received such offers. They need the cap space to go after Wade though.

No way they take on salary beyond this year. They have 2010 fever. Maybe offer an expiring plus a second rounder or two? I've seen almost every game this kid has played on the Bulls, and while he has issues, when his head is in the game he makes a major positive impact. Also, I've never seen a player get jerked around so much as he has been by the Bulls, so a lot of his attitude towards that organization is justified in my book.

I've thought for a while that TT and Brewer were similar type players. If Rambis and the coaching staff are finally making Corey play under control and confident, maybe they can do the same for Tyrus.

Last October, CHI refused to extend the rookie scale deal for Tyrus Thomas, so his value now is what he can do for a team for the rest of the season plus his Bird Rights. Neither is particularly valuable to MIN.

I think the price is about right though, so you may have something here if you were looking for a three-team or four team trade.

I'd do this trade, I doubt Chicago would, as it actually cuts into their available capspace next year. I know we don't need another PF, but we do need more athleticism, and Thomas is about as athletic as they come.

The athleticism is a need, but the problem is his tweener status and skill set. He just doesn't match up well with most. He'd be an okay reserve, but he's going to have to land with the right team that can help him develop.

He's not really a tweener, he's a PF, just a skinny one. His skill set fits well here, he's athletic as hell, plays defense, can get out on the break, and knock down the occasional 15 footer. He doesn't match up well with bruisers, but he's good against face-up PF's and can provide weak-side help. If he didn't have the 'tude issues he'd be pretty much just what we've been asking for since we traded for Al. Unfortunately, he's on the block because of said 'tude issues.

I was under the impression that Gomes deal wasn't guaranteed past this year, which is why it made perfect sense for the Bulls. If they need the cap space they can cut him, but if they don't sign to max FA's and they want to keep him, they have that option.

Am I wrong about that?

It's partially guaranteed. He'd still count about $1M against the cap each year. Someone has the exact numbers.

They get cap space we get a wing. :D

I'm not a huge fan of Deng's contract but would take him for free. Send them Utah's pick if they want a pick.

Let's keep all TT talk here. I would not oppose this, if the price is right. If nothing else than for the possibility of having Hollins/Thomas/Pavs/Brewer/Sessions all on the court at some point. To paraphrase the Wu:

The combination will make my eyes bleed

Wait, is this a good thing?

What's Tyrus Thomas value to us?

1. We're not playing for this season.
2. Since CHI didn't extend his rookie deal, he's a FA this summer
3. Do we want his bird rights for next year?

$100 athlete, 5-cent attitude.

taking a flyer on a talented player? give Rambis and Laimbeer the rest of the season to work with him, if he responds then Wolves resign him, if not he can go. that's if it takes only expirings + 2nd to land him.

I kind of see what you're saying. The Wolves could sign him whether he was here or not, but we'd get a looksie this season to see if his character is as bad as claimed. If Tommy Udo is correct, and it'd only take expirings, I suppose its possible.

Wouldn't he count as a cap hold until we either renounced his bird rights, or someone signed him to a contract? Would his cap hold be more or less than Gomes deal is?

Lots, lots more.
