Rudy Gay not likely to be matched?

Post#1 » by shangrila » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:40 pm

I know this is just someone's opinion, but I thought it was interesting;

WojYahooNBA

This means Memphis is unlikely to pay Rudy Gay this summer.

So does Memphis getting Ronnie Brewer mean they might be more willing to let Gay go? Does this give Minnesota a chance? Do we even want it (I'm assuming we'd need to use all the capspace for him, meaning no Pekovic)?

With the cap space some of these teams have I get the feeling hes getting a ridiculous number and I hope thats not from us.

I think MEM will retain brewer for 4-5m regardless of gay. Putting them around ~51m before resigning gay, their picks, and without discounting Jaric. In turn MEM will probably match any deal in the 8-10m yr range which should land them well below the lux. Meaning we have no shot, maybe an outside shot if we toss in something like a Trade kicker to the offer sheet so they'd need to think twice about matching.

I am 100% cool with us spending all our free agent money on Gay.

Rubio/Turner/Gay/Love/Pekovic + what ever we can get for Big AL :droop:

I think the Clips and Nets will be our main competition for Gay.

When you try to fill in all the gaps, you start seeing there is way more cap space than there is players to fill that space

Kings = Lee
Heat = Bosh + Wade
Knicks = T-Mac + Amare + ?
Cavs = Lebron (returns after winning championship)
Bulls = Boozer
Thunder = ?
Clippers = Gay
Nets = Joe Johnson + Josh Howard ?
Wolves = ?
Wizards = Josh Childress + ?
Suns = Mike Miller
Dallas = Haywood (Cuban pays up to keep him)

[EDITED w/ Klomp's comments]

With all that money out there and Memphis able to match you see how long the odds are that we are able to sign Rudy Gay.

I don't think this affects their decision to match an offer very much, if at all. This was likely more about them wanting to make the playoffs this year, and then having the option to match offers on both wings, so maybe they'll be able to resign them for a little less... well, at least in Brewer's case, Gay likely will be bid up with so many teams able to throw a max deal at him.

More likely is that they'll sell off one (or two) of their draft picks on draft night.

Dallas, Phoenix, Toronto will not be in position to sign anyone big, unless it is one of their own.

If I was Camby I would sign for the vet min w/ a top team. I would also stop bringing the ball up the court since it kills the fastbreak. Why do I do that?? :banghead:

I think Gay likely becomes the consolation prize for a team that misses out on LeBron, Wade, and Johnson. If we make him our #1 priority out of the gate, then maybe we have a shot as he feels like was always our choice and a fall back plan for other teams. Not saying that would necessarily work, but it's probably the only way it happens, IMO.

I could see that happening too. I'm on the fence with Gay. If he gets anything near Brandon Roy money (13.5/15/16/17.7/19) that just doesn't seem worth it to me. I'd rather see what the going rate is for Josh Childress.

If we are able to sign Gay, I want a thorough physical including a brain scan. His arms, legs and brain only seem work on offense. If they don't work on defensive he won't make our team that much better.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

Rudy is off my Gay-Dar at this point, there's going to be a bidding war and wise teams don't get into bidding wars for guys of that ilk

You had the perfect chance to say something about Gay-dar and you messed it up.

EDIT: Well done.
