Joe Johnson

Post#1 » by Kevin_Love_42 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 2:40 am

What do you guys think the chances of Joe Johnson coming to Minnesota? I have a gut feeling that this is the guy Minnesota is going to come hard after.

Signing him outright? 0-1% chance.

I think Atlanta is willing to pay him at least what we can offer. Atlanta will only let him walk if he gets a near max deal (they need $ to pay Horford). He would have to choose to come here over other, more lucrative offers and we all know that ain't gonna happen folks.

Our best chance would be a sign and trade. We would have to give up a few assets. Atlanta may have interest in Pekovic, or possibly Brewer as a replacement.

He rejected a 4 year $60 million dollar contract last year. I think if I was in his shoes I would take that, but than again I'm the guy who wants every contestant on Deal or No Deal to press the button and unnecessarily scream DEAL, no matter how annoying it may be.

I think he really wants to stay in Atlanta but he may use other teams as bait to try and get more than a 4-year contract. If we were willing to offer him big money for 6-7 years I think we may be able to entice him to come here but I don't want us to do that either. So I'm with Dr. K, almost no chance he's here next season.

I think he would've been ideal in last season's system, but now he's meh. He's a great player, but he's too old for the rest of our squad, and he'll ask for too much $.

There is a joke to be made about Gay putting someone off.

Johnson will be pursued by and sign with Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, LAC and possibly New York to play with another 2nd tier star FA before out right signing here I think. Its not that Minnesota cant land one, but all the other destinations have a star player or a supporting cast ready to win now.

Plus i dont even think we have the cap space to sign him until we make some moves.

No interest in JJ at all. He's already 30, right? He's going to want 4-6 years at max value. No way in hell does that fit in with our timeline.

I think there is two ways to approach this offseason. Either go after a young guy (i.e. Rudy Gay) who might be worth a big contract but his team might deal in a S&T, or go after lower cost young guys (i.e. JJ Redick) whose team might not match a 5 or 6 mil a year deal. I'm okay either way as long as they don't cripple the team with big contracts.

He's an unrestricted free agent

He's 28. I'd say 4 years would fine, 6 years would be questionable. Either way, I don't think he's signing here unless we trade for another established veteran (or two) or our offer blows everyone elses out of the water.

We can't sign him for 6 years, just 5. And if we offered him 15+ mil a year for 5 years I don't think anyone would beat that. The last day of his contract, he'd be 33.
