Harrison Barnes has already left a lasting mark in the state’s basketball scene, but he still hasn’t replaced Fred Hoiberg at the top of the school’s scoring records.
The North Carolina recruit is 31 points shy of Hoiberg’s career total (1,759) and 69 points short of “The Mayor’s” single-season record (715).
If you haven't seen Barnes play watch for him in the McDonald's game. He may not be the high scorer though as he like Fred also involves his team mates. The Ames/Illinois game Barnes scored something like 26 points but wasn't even the player of the game. His team mate McDermott was even though he scored two less than Barnes but had an outrageous amount of rebounds.
Barnes won the Wooden award this year but from what I have read in many articles don't necessarily believe that he will declare for the NBA anytime soon. He has a good head on his shoulders and puts a good education first. He doesn't like to get distracted by the non important things and doesn't drive around in a big fancy car. In fact he doesn't have the need for one because he doesn't even have a drivers license. He says he rides with friends but that can be a little dangerous too not knowing what they might be in possession of. I guess he figures he knows his friends very well.
I'm wondering if Barnes might think he made the wrong decision when declaring to North Carolina since Roy Williams is probably having the least success this year of any time in his career.
I know Fred scouted the game when Ames High played an Illinois team at the Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State campus this winter and has probably scouted other Ames games this season.
