Um. Hiring and retaining Steve Nash.
Nets win a ring without Nash or at least make the finals. He wasn't just not good. He was downright horrendous and sabotaged the team.

Re: What are Sean Marks' biggest Nets gaffes, for the record?
Nash was his biggest mistake. A terrible coach and Marks dedicated roster building to his unique(terrible vision). We still have way too many small guards. His dedication to Nash wasted multiple seasons.
People can say Harden trade but the Harden gave us our best play. If we didn’t have Nash we would’ve won and had the roster to survive his rehab.
Joe Harris signing was terrible. I can give the money a pass as all the shooters was getting paid at that time(Duncan, Bertans, Luke). But once we had Scary Hours it made zero sense to keep our 4th highest paid player as one dimensional shooter.
The Spencer trade was probably his 2nd largest offense. At the time a fringe All Star. His value could’ve solidified our team with anything from a starter to a 6th man or multiple rotation pieces. He and Joe chose nothing.
Last year removing all shooting from the roster you’ve specifically made to only work with the most shooting. To the point by the deadline every single FA brought in the offseason was literally off the team.
Using the late 1st instead of trading them for ready now role players. I get it but it was also obvious. It’s still forgivable as he did that with Landry/Bey but I consider it slightly different considering the draft position.
All in all he’s a mediocre to bad GM. He let friendship blind him, considering his team building style pre-Nash(literally once said he likes his teams like the Rockets, like most of the league. Then had the Rockets star and coach and was like naw.). He isn’t quick to admit when he screws up and fit it. Micro ball is already out of style with Vaughn. It’s time to bring in the years overdue wings necessary for this team to contend.

1. ->
Although Sean Marks initially pushed for Nash’s hiring, the Nets head coach has been praised by Tsai.
They also been spotted together during lacrosse game just few days ago. Spent very good time doing so.
Can find rest on ND. Also Tsai share same investments and love to play golf together during summer. I'm willing to bet anything Nash was Tsai move. He fired Kenny same way. Probably spoke to KD how they did during GSW days and rest is formality.
2. Again, it was Tsai vs Morey thing. Not sure which reporter said it, but Tsai has huge issue with Morey after Taiwan tweet. Morey wanted Tsai to buy Rockets, Tsai wanted NYC.
No love lost there.

Joe is not one dimensional. He's probably been our best perimeter defender this year, and has the ability to drive to the basket. There's a reason he, along with KD, is part of all our most efficient 5 man lineups.
Dinwiddie was a cost thing. There's nothing Marks could have done differently. The tax hit on retaining Dinwiddie would have ben insane. Returning comparable salary (e.g. Kuzma like some advocated) would have yielded the same insane tax hit. At the end of the day, Marks did Dinwiddie a solid by helping him get the contract he deserved, but we could not pay him.
You need cost controlled youth when your cap sheet is top/star heavy. The Harden trade wiped that out, so he used the picks he had. You don't need old vets getting DNPs at the end of the bench.

Spencer, useful as he is, was definitely not someone you could take an insane tax hit on. If anyone was worth doing that with, I'd argue Fro over DWid all day (theoretically not tossing Fro in to the Harden acquisition) as Jarrett was the keystone to our defense, and has been missed ever since, which yes, does change the Claxton / Simmons calculus.
Also, this doesn't get mentioned enough, but I thought Spencer incurring a season-ending injury in '20-21 was a real crusher for us. He was in the process of reinventing himself as a sort of super-sub, versatile glue guy with vastly improved defense, and would have been hugely useful considering how many games the big three lost that season to covid, foolishness, and Nash overplaying Harden.
DWid's absence is arguably the difference between KD having to carry the team to a narrow loss to the Bucks, versus going all the way.
Say what you want to about Marks not building 'correctly' around the stars, but he's done a terrific job finding low-cost talent from day one. For example, people love to rag on Joe, but he was a 2nd-round discard that cost the Nets nothing, who was always going to have limited upside. The way fans complain, you'd think he was the Nets' pride and joy mid-1st pick who was supposed to be a future all-star. Or something like that.

Absolutely disagree. Joe is absolutely one dimensional just like Kenard, Bertans and Duncan. Eyes light up against him in isolation.
Spencer was tradable. Nothing says we had to keep him. As we are right now linked to Kyle Kuzma. A deal they initially turned down.
Listen we are winning and you’re a super fan so there’s no problems in your world. But the direct cause of why your Stan team isn’t going for a 3peat is Sean Marks.

Eyes may light up, but he's forcing them to go dark. Joe has the lowest allowed points per possession in isolation on the team by a wide margin, while seeing the third highest iso percentage behind Claxton (2nd best PPP) and Watanabe (worst PPP).

Eye test this season does support the numbers on Joe's isolation D.
Guys eyes do light up once they got Joe 1v1, but he's strong enough to offer some resistance to the rim where the long arms of KD/Clax are waiting to contest.

Seems the best place to ask this... If Marks needs to go (and I'm not sure the Nets can get anyone better), is now really the best time to get rid of him given that there seems to be a good chance that the team will soon be back in rebuild-mode?

Nash and that's it really... Needed someone with a stronger voice to handle the combustible personalities, and even then there's no guarantee it would have worked

100% agree on Nash being the biggest mistake and the Harden trade, however the rest is a little off.
Spencer situation was injury and finances. He went down so quick he never established himself on the roster and would have been a big gamble to bring back with Irving/Harden thought to be getting extended before all the vax stuff.
we can nitpick little bad decisions (like bey, or picking shamet over kennard) but that's a double edged sword. he also made great trades that were similar to structure for bruce brown and oneal. and great non-lotto selections in claxton, levert, cam. nobody is going to bat 1.000.
nash was garbage and in over his head, and that cost them the milwaukee series. other than i think managing the personalities on this team was simply, specifically kyrie, is just impossible. either you give him full control and enable his craziness to ruin the team or you try to set some limits and he demands trades to force his way out or does something like what got him suspended earlier in the year. kyrie is a no-win situation for anything more than a month or two. but if he was the reason they got KD he was worth it for that.

Re: What are Sean Marks' biggest Nets gaffes, for the record?
here's 1 question - can anyone honestly say since getting KD there has been a season where they HAVEN'T when healthy looked like a championship team?
this is KD year 3. before his injury they were 21-2 or something in their last 23. year 1 they were on path to sweeping the nba champs until kyrie/harden got hurt. miss beating them by an inch. year 2 before kd injury they looked great even with kyrie injury. after harden trade when kd came back they again looked great. against boston the whole roster played well EXCEPT kd/kyrie. had they done anything (and nash not sucked donkey dick) the team takes a 2-0 lead back to brooklyn.
we can criticize for all the reasons they haven't won - especially nash since coaching makes a difference in the playoffs - but the reality is the rosters he's constructed have been the goods. the problems have been almost entirely off the court and stem from 1 player, who sadly was the key to getting KD in the first. kyrie was a devils bargain they need to rid themselves of once and for all.

Harden trade was absolutely the right move.
Harden was the perfect fit for Durant. He is the prototype floor general for the modern NBA. Even his scoring style fits(3’s, FT’s, layups. low FG attempts for high points).
Kyrie was the most aggressive. Do we not get what we had? A floor general taking the most efficient shots. A scorer who might not get the focus forcing the focus on him. And the most unstoppable most effective/efficient weapon the league ever known waiting for “the moment”.
Spencer was eventually traded and we refused to take back Kuzma/KCP(Kuzma who we desperately want right now). No it wasn’t anything other than boneheaded decision making.
The fit of this roster never made sense. Even at his height Joe should have been moved for a 3&D wing or rebounding/defensive center(Nic did not emerge then). 3 offensive stars and your 4th core contract is offensive as well? Add the guard ball we obviously wouldn’t have a good defense until JV came and started using wings.
By the Spencer trade the lineup could’ve been
Harden
Kyrie/KCP
Kuzma
Durant
Joe traded Big
A supercharged version of the Rockets who took the Warriors to 7.
But instead we didn’t want to take back any money(Warriors did and won their 4th ring. Surely costly but now worth more than the f**king Lakers). We kept Joe well past his heights(as if 50% 3point shooting was substantial). There was even Nash/Marks quotes saying they don’t believe in a rotation. They wanted to plug and play around stars. They truly felt they had stars and could do whatever they wanted around them.
We had a god damn dynasty in hand. Literal palm sir. Players are a headache and we did have injuries. But if our front office weren’t idiots all that would’ve survived. We seen it with 3peat Lakers, the Bulls and Warriors. Distractions happen on great non Spurs teams. But this team never got there because once stars were secured the FO wanted their agendas known/felt. It’s the worst front office in the history of sports.

as an outsider, non nets fan, i think marks still has done a good job. coming into the situation post billy king and getting some talented guys was good work. i thought the biggest mistake was the harden trade since he gave up so much for him in talent and draft capital. but outside of that, what can you do with a major headcase like kyrie?

Marks
- Signs Dinwiddie for cap space
- Signs Kyrie for cap space
- Lets Dinwiddie walk for a 2nd rounder
- Trades Kyrie for Dinwiddie and picks
We're back where we started and Marks still has his job. Give it up to the man.

Terrible trade for what we gave up.
