I think it was exactly a thought out decision, and I think the decision was ultimately made by the boston series last year.

KD & Kyrie were both healthy, the supporting cast played excellent, and they got swept. And it was because KD played the worst ball of his career, and Kyrie just as he was pre-Harden did nothing to make the offense go except iso. As a team there was no commitment to defense, boxing out, and that's why they lost games 1 and 2. Dragic saw that there were issues in the few short months he was there. Lebron has never had a series like KD had, and if it were Lebron they win that series.

anyone who says they weren't shaken at the thought of the worst case scenario of the entire team going south if KD fell off even a little bit would have been lying to themselves. and obviously the decision to not extend Kyrie was the right one. max'ing him would have been asking for more trouble. if they thought KD was going to still be KD at age 38 like Lebron is I'm not sure they deal him, and I think the whole rest of the NBA would have dropped their pants to get him last summer.

the decision to sell now was probably further solidified by the lack of good offers last summer, the same as the decision to sell kyrie now was probably further solidified by the fact that he actually had some teams wanting him unlike last summer when all they had to do was find the room.

the only factors that could have shifted things were JV > Nash and the improved supporting cast with Oneale, Simmons, Claxton anchoring the D. And they did their best to make that happen if you look at how the team was playing pre-KD injury and how they won some games even without him and Kyrie. Had everything stayed harmonious I think that group had a shot this year but like always Kyrie just couldn't help himself from imploding everything around him.

Notice the trade came after Boston humiliated us two days before his request. Boston punched us so hard in the mouth that it was obvious we are not in their league and we can’t have our way with them like we used to. Celtics got sick of being pushed around in 20-21 that they came out hungrier. Marks has learned his lesson and it was the right move to move both of them. The only ones phased by it are KD/Kyrie Stans. The reality sunk in we needed a rebuild; the 18-2 run was great but I don’t know if we would have beaten Boston. Kyrie tanked that game and now we all know why. It’s fitting his last game was against his former team and he was humbled. I am excited about he young squad. The trade made it clear we are not in complete rebuild mode, not this is not the 2008 trade of J Kidd anymore, this is not your Swamp Nets, no, this is a new era.

I'm 99% sure something happened behind the scenes that absolutely killed the team's focus vs Boston. The way they played was completely uncharacteristic of how Vaughn had them prepared all season long.

They knew what was coming, imo. Kyrie is a complete cancer and the best move of Marks' tenure was getting him the hell out of here as quickly as possible. Two years overdue

Boston is certainly not unbeatable.

We did need to make a trade. But I think we had the assets to get Plumlee and another role player through buy out. Like Will Barton.

They would be favored. But we definitely could have beat them with the way they were playing.

Kyrie just decided to ruin it. So he could lose in the First Round with Luka.

It's going to be funny watching them implode.

...There is no guarantee we'll see another Net better than KD in our lifetimes.

I dunno about that. I feel like I've already seen two in Doctor J. and Kidd. Regardless of how their various skills stack up, they were better leaders and bigger winners than KD, at the end of the day.
