Current state of the Nets

Post#1 » by shspg5 » Sat Jan 26, 2008 6:26 pm

After another horrible loss to a Melo-less Nugget squad, I think that any hope of NJ turning it around must go. I have argued that this team CAN win with a small tweak to the lineup but I no longer believe that. Here are some things that cannot be overlooked:

1. RJ is averaging bout 25 a game however, he IS not and Will not ever be a number one option. However, on this team he has become that and his lack of handle and creativity make him very brutish and one dimensional. NJ tries to force him to score and it really just looks rugged more often then not, nothing smooth about an RJ drive to the basket. He and Carter both SUCK without the ball, and in terms of playmaking and shooting, you have to take Carters game over RJs. Which means RJ has to go, but his value is up because of the season he has had.

2. Kidd has become a liability on the defensive end when having to guard quick guards. He can no longer outsmart them as his side to side movement has really diminished. He is still very effective using his body and needs to guard off ball. This means NJ needs to bring in a player to guard small. Marcus Williams is slower then Kidd I believe and really needs to go. He is nice with the pick and roll but he will never be a starter in this league. He is NOT the next Deron Williams. There will be plenty of PGs in this years draft and I believe NJ must get an explosive attacker, not in the mold of Kidd.

3. Boone has really come along nicely and has added a strong inside presence. With the expected growth of SWill, I think NJ is good there, and maybe Krstic eventually learns how to play the game again.

4. Boki and Wright will not due. Wright was a mistake from the start as several better players and prospects were available at that position. Boki is just not good enough for the NBA. He is a decent shooter, thats all. He scores only because he is WIDE OPEN. The wing/shooter must be the major concern for NJ.

All in all I think NJ should just ride this season out, unless a great offer is made for RJ and Marcus. With the draft pick select a PG who can create off the dribble and can help Kidd defend. In the offseason are biggest assets must be moved (RJ, Williams) A young wing ala Gerald Green or DMiles (if he is recovered) and maybe even try to nab Channing Frye, who will become expendable when Oden returns and would helf NJ in shooting. NJ is not far away but they need to go after the right pieces. A PF/C who can play and shoot. An athletic wing with range. A TRUE successor for JKidd. Put the ball back in VC's hands and let him become a playmake along with Kidd.

1. If we had a smarter coach, Richard could be our number one option. He has the talent and the heart but he gets down when we are loosing.

2. It isn't that he can't keep up with them, it's more he doesn't want to waste his energy. Kidd on the fast break is faster than almost all the gaurds in the NBA but on defense, he acts like he is too good.

3. Agreed.

4. Wright has played better than Boki but both are horrible. Nachbar misses so many open shots in close games that absolutely kills us.

I don't know who we can get for RJ and Marcus considering nothing can really improve this team. Gasol will be too soft and we already have Krstic and O'Neal cannot even play this year so I doubt he can have an impact next year.

Putting Miles or Green in the spot of Richard is a negative consdering how much he brought to the table and how much Vince has regressed.

I'm all for getting Frye though so we have a nice offense-defense combo in Williams - Krstic and Boone - Frye. As for drafting a point gaurd to defend, that is more of a vets job that we can find in the FA like we did in Armstrong.

I think VC should stay. If Kidd demands a trade, you go to Dallas and say ok give us a package. You hope it includes Terry/Howard and youngsters (Bass, Ager, etc..) If you have to take on Dampier's contract, you ship Collins out with Kidd.

Then you go to Sacramento, tell them you'll give them RJ, they'll probably counter with Artest. Start there...see if we can add Brad Miller if we give them Magloire + fillers

Something like this... Trade ID #4438948

Terry/VC/Artest/Boone/Miller -- still could potentially be a contender. We get shooting, we get bench production, we get youth. We probably increase our defense (Terry is faster than Kidd, Artest is better than RJ)

probably not, just because I think Mo Williams and Michael Redd are overpaid. Villanueva is attractive, but I think I'd pass.
