A little Hope for Those who Don't Like The Trade

Nets Expiring Contracts
Nachbar - 2.5 Million
Magloire - 4 Million
Diop - 2.14 Million
Van Horn - 4 Million
Armstrong - 770 K
Kristic - 1.889 Million
TOTAL EXPIRINGS = 15.3 Million

Restricted Expirings
Swift - 5.8 million Expiring (can only be traded by himself for 2 months)
Undisclosed Trade Exception (probably in the neighborhood of 2 million)

I know a lot of people don't see the value in these expiring contracts, so here is a way to put it into perspective. Pau Gasol's salary is 13.7 Mil for 4 more years. Had we been able to complete this trade before Memphis traded him to the Lakers, we would have been able to not only offer more expiring salary then they got, but also more young prospects and picks. Here is an example of an offer that would have worked financially and completely trumped the Lakers offer - Boone, Magloire, Van Horn, Nachbar, Marcus, DAL 1st round pick.

Obviously the Gasol trade is an exception in the sense that trades like that do not happen very often. The point I am trying to make is that now in addition to receiving a promising young PG in Devin Harris, we now have the means to acquire the next all star level player that comes on the market. 16 Million worth of expirings could theoretically facilitate a trade salary wise for any player in the league.

It is impossible to say whether or not a player like that will become available over the next 4 days, and in all likelihood no such player on Gasol's level will emerge. In that situation I would expect Thorn to use the expirings to add a mid range salary player like Mike Miller. He will also probably try to trade VC or RJ to gain even more flexibility and maybe another building block similar to Devin Harris.

The bottomline is we all trust Rod Thorn when it comes to trades. He is an extremely smart and patient GM who has time and time again gotten the better of other NBA franchises even when it looked like his back was against the wall. At minimum this trade gives Rod Thorn the flexibility to go out and get some big things done. When it is all said and done that might be the most important thing we gained out of this situation.

Thorn is excellent at his job!!!!!!!!!! The key year will be when the Lebron class of FA are available. To be honest they were goin that anyway by not giving kidd the contract ext which is the basis to all of this.
The "Turnpike" deserve a NBA championship!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if Lebron still wants to come here without Kidd. I can definatly see Wade in a Nets uni though.

I would agree. Some wouldn't. I am just really pissed at how stupid the Memphis GM was to trade Gasol for so little so early. We could easily improve their offer now and a team of Kristic - Gasol - RJ - VC - Harris could get to the conf finals in the east.
