I will agree with this...I wont deny this isnt a thought now and then, because it is a given...but I never understood how a true fan can root for his team to lose...

a lot of people here have talked about how the worst possible team you can be a fan of is the one that walks the middle of the road, and I wont deny the notion...

you're basically a .500 team...couple wins over .500 one year, a couple wins under .500 the next...maybe a break out year of 46-36...but you still know in your best year you would be lucky to get to the conference finals...but happy to make it to the second round...

The fact is, organizations do gauge their success like this...and there are a lot of teams like this...

the concept of tanking, maybe conceptionalized with Tim Duncan and the type of season the Spurs had before they were able to draft him...had more to do with luck than anything else...maybe if you really put it under a microscope, you could get to a certain point in the season where it is evident the Spurs really dont care if they win again, but they were able to pull it off under the circumstances...

You want the Nets to truly tank (again, a middle of the road team)...you should start with game 1...in reality, organizations dont think of the draft until they are mathematically out of the playoffs...and thats pretty much the only time I give up on a season, meaning I could care less if they win a game from that point out...

otherwise...you are who you are...you make the moves based on what you see now and what you project in the immediate future...throw in the dollar and cents game you have with today's NBA and it gets even more complicated...

The only true fans who I can pitty with, who share that mentality are those who eat from the bottom of the conference standings year in and year out...I can sympathize with that fan...

the rest of you fans are confused and you forget how difficult it is to draft and how your playing craps and roulette simultaneously...and regardless of how much you think your team has a better chance of winning because of the players you can acquire via the draft...luck has more to do with it than anything else...

It takes a lot variables to formulate the position to draft the type of players who can make a difference and then you have to be lucky enough to see them play in your uniform when they can actually make a difference...
