Nets Win Lottery

Post#1 » by amk482 » Sun May 10, 2009 11:41 pm

So imagine the Nets win the lottery and we take Griffin. What other moves do we make? In my view, we must get a 3rd PG and a backup Center. Without making any other moves here is what our depth chart looks like (assuing we move VC to the 3 to make some minutes for CDR)

PG - Harris/Dooling
SG - CDR/Carter/Dooling
SF - Carter/Hayes/Simmons
PF - Griffin/Yi/Anderson/Najera
C - Lopez/Boone/Swill

Yeah my first goal would be to sign a decent 3rd string PG on the cheap. We have enough guys to play the 2 and 3. We need to add one more vet who can play the 4/5 who is a true sized big man to help tutor our young guys, and go with that.

I think we keep VC at the two guard and let CDR be the second guard off the bench. We need a perimeter defender so that must be addressed. I would imagine that Yi, Najera, Hassel, Swill & Boone maybe on the tradeable assets list.

Maybe even consider getting two defenders.

I would very actively look to move two of Yi, Boone, Williams. I'd also look to upgrade to a competent starting caliber 3.

^^^ I agree with that I would imagine that Marion would be a great fit but he may want too much money and I believe we will need to S&T. if unavailable to us then I think if NOH are dumping salaries Posey would be another good option.

IMO even if you win the lottery, you stick with the rebuilding plan. You'd have Griffin (20), Lopez (21) and Harris (26), along with complimentary guys such as CDR (22), Anderson (21) and potentially Yi/SWill as well. That is a team that if you play your cards right with Carter/cap room could be great for a long time. Plus if Griffin is as good as everyone thinks, it will make this team that much more appealing to a perspective FA.

I like Vince, but at 32, he does not fit in long term with the group listed above. Also, as good as Blake can be, unless you feel he can be an immediate 18 and 10 player, I don't think this group is a top 4 team in the East in 2009/10.

Having a guy like Griffin fall into your lap allows you to continue the rebuilding process without the fear of falling into that Memphis level where you are too weak for free agents to take you seriously.

If my the mercy of the NBA GODS and Stern, we get the #1 pick this year.

I would try to trade VC and Simmons to get other young players and 2010 picks to Develop. Have a completely young group and let them grow together. I would try to get a young SF or SG that is already in the league or get a pick for next years draft. I would even keep Yi. I would have him be the first forward off the bench.

Harris
CDR
VC or Young Player or future pick from VC or Simmons trade.
Griffin
Lopez

Dooling
Hayes
Anderson
Young SF defensive type
Yi
Swat/ Boone which ever one doesnt come out of summer camp better gets traded or waived.

Even if Carter was here, I think they will lose a lot of money.

My one concern with this plan is about Yi/Anderson. Can either really play SF enough to ensure both have viable spots in the rotation? I fear that there wouldn't be enough PT for both and you'd replicate the Boone/Swat scenario of this past season where we basically killed the trade value they had.

I agree...I think Yi or Anderson will be traded before the season (assuming we pickup a FA)

Neither Yi or Anderson can play the 3 unfortunately. They're both similar players. I could see one of them being done here this offseason, however, I can also see the logjam as a benefit if we need to orchestrate a sign-and-trade in the next season or two. Never know. I think once July 1st rolls around, we'll know a lot more of where management plans on taking this team this offseason.

Maybe the Czar had a perfect idea.

Lets see Yi play C. Okur plays center. It is worth a shot.

Bargani has played C too, so I guess its worth a shot. If nothing else, it would make it easier to use Boone and/or Swat as a chip to get Najera out of here.

its an interesting concept, that is, playing Yi at the 5 spot off the bench. He could really spread the floor and get the opposing center away frm the basket. Yi is never going to be a low post threat, but I think we do need to get him a little closer to the basket so he isnt just spotting up from 3 pt range. On occasion, Nets ran some plays, where Yi would flash across the middle and he would nail a foul line/foul line extended jumper. Frank should find a way to et him closer to get some production. Regardless, wherever he plays, he needs to add 15 pounds of muscle.

Carter
Prince
Griffin
Lopez

He'd be a nice fit though I don't think the Pistons are looking to trade him =\... I'd imagine they try to move Rip who they so foolishly extended last year, before they move Tayshaun.

Agreed.

Either way, if you're not trading the draft pick, Lopez, Carter or Harris, what would NJ even have to trade that DET would have any interest in?

While I don't agree with the "win now" approach, in this scenario I'd pursue Ariza or Josh Childress with the MLE.

I'd actually look to get Childress in a sign-and-trade, which will be difficult because Josh will be a BYC player (were you the one who pointed that out to me?) but is pretty plausible since the Nets have pieces that the Hawks could use (backup big men, the 11th pick in this draft - could nab them a quality PG prospect, etc.)
