Cashing in on Washington's lotto misfortune

Not sure how big of a problem the long-term money is, but worth a shot

NJ Trades: Vince Carter ($16,123,250), Jarvis Hayes ($2,062,800) and Josh Boone ($2,056,968)
Total: $20,243,018

WAS Trades: Etan Thomas ($7,354,500), Mike James ($6,466,600), Darius Songalia ($4,526,000), Deshawn Stevenson ($3,883,929), Oleksiy Pecherov ($1,547,640) and Pick #5
Total $23,778,669

Washington gets an all-star SG in Carter. His distribution skills along with his willingness to defer, make him a good fit next to Arenas. They also get 2 rotational bench players in Boone and Hayes. After accounting for the luxury tax, this deal saves the Wizards $7 million this year, not counting the price of the pick (more than $13 million if you do count the pick). With the addition of Carter and the returns of Arenas/Haywood (combined to play 8 games), I think that is a definite top 4 team in the East. Depending on the pending FA of Hedo and the state of KG's knee, it might be the #2 team in the conference.

New Jersey continues their rebuilding process with pick #5. This would seemingly put them in a prime position for James Harden. Plus they'd still still have their other pick at #11 (James Johnson or Earl Clark). The Nets take on a decent chunk of salary this upcoming season (about $6.5 million), but also trim a little more than $5 million off of their 2010/11 payroll (counts the salary of pick #5), putting them in position to potentially add that max-level free agent that summer. At the very least they put themselves in prime position for the Derrick Favors sweepstakes :D

I don't think they're going to be willing to take on Vince's salary...

It's very possible that is the case.

I honestly don't know what to think. On one hand they clearly seem to be choking on a massive luxury tax bill this year. On the other their owner is in his 70s and seems to want to win now considering they reportedly declined opportunities to deal away Jamison for expirings at the deadline.

This deal does a number on their 2010/11 salary since I'm sure they'd want to retain Haywood. Though they do save a nice amount next year while adding an all-star.

I'm sure they'd prefer to do Songalia/Stevenson and #5 for a more moderately priced SG (Josh Howard, Rip Hamilton, Kevin Martin, etc.), but I don't know if the draft is strong enough for any of those teams to do it.

I agree with Netsforce.

I was thinking about this too, but VC bill is too high for them.

Though I think since the Kings got screwed, they might be upset they didnt get in the top 3.

Depending on where they are going - Young/Cheap or Fill Seats, If it is Fill Seats, I think a VC and Martin combo would be exciting.

VC and #11 with either Hometown Fav Anderson or Yi for some of their crappy contracts and the #4. We would have a choice between Harden or DeRozon.

If I'm packaging VC and #11, I'm not taking back any of their crappy contracts. I like Harden and DeRozan, but I'm not giving up Carter to merely "move up" in the draft for anyone other than Griffin.

I understand what you are saying but

They only have two really bad contracts

Nocioni - until 2013 max on deal $7.5mil
Uldrih - until 2013 max on deal $7.2mil PO in 2013
Garcia - until 2014 max on deal $6 mil

I would take Garcia and Nocioni with #4 for VC and #11. You can add in Diogu and or Donte Greene too if you want.

Garcia is not a bad contract, I doubt Sacto has any interest in moving him.
I wouldn't take Udrih in any kind of deal with Sacto.
If I'm moving VC to Sacto, either the 11 pick is not invloved or the 4th pick AND Jason Thompson is. Something like VC for the 4th pick, Nocioni and Kenny Thomas would work, I just don't see the reason Sacto does it.
We were only good trade partners with Sacto if they got the 1st or 2nd pick, then we had a shot at getting Thompson without overpaying too absurdly if Sacto went for Griffin.
