Nets Brooklyn Arena to be Modeled After Airplane Hangar?

"The Nets have dropped the design of famous architect Frank Gehry for the planned Brooklyn arena that would be the new home of the team. A less expensive design, from the group that created Conseco Fieldhouse, will be adopted instead.

Gehry's plan was for a $1 billion glass-walled structure. The new plan will cost $800 million and will resemble an airplane hangar.

Nets' owner Bruce Ratner is scrambling to lower costs and commence construction of the arena by the end of the year when the team's right to use tax-exempt financing will expire."

I don't care what it looks like as long as it's in Brooklyn.

I feel the same.

Some malls look like airplane hangers.

I think when more than a side shot come out, people will be more upbeat about this. I'm not a major supporter of Gehry's style of architecture, but I did like his stadium. Just a sign of the times. This new firm did the Conseco Field House which I think is a really nice stadium.

The one thing I'm curious about. Gehry's design included the ability to have a hockey rink as well. Makes me think that Ratner may have been thinking about seeing if he could get the Islanders to move off of Long Island. Regardless, if we scrapped that part of the design, I wonder how much money we would have saved. Gehry's design costs $1 Billion while the new firm cost $800 Million. I doubt that change would have saved $200 Million to save Gehry's design, but I'm still curious ya know? If Ratner didn't plan on trying to get the Islanders to move, I thought it was absolutely pointless to build the hockey rink into the plans just so they could have Disney on Ice a few times a year.

Article says the new design does not allow for a hockey rink.

Yeah I want to know how much money was saved from that particular part of the design. I honestly think Gehry's design could have been salvaged. I know they had a ton of redesigns over the years. The one make sticking point was the glass facade. I wish they could have found some common ground still, I like the new design. It's fine.

I need to see from a few other angles but I still think it looks fine. If you look at this designer's portfolio, they've done some great stadiums.

Note: looking around the designer's site, I realized they built my colleges football stadium (I went to Elon University). We're in the process of getting funds to build a basketball stadium/convention center and I wouldn't be surprised if we use them again.
