Terrance Williams playing great as the initiator on offense. Great vision on the pick and roll. The 2nd help defender is starting to cheat on his pick and roll. He needs a ton of work playing off the ball in the half court however. He also needs to attack off the pick more and only pick it up when he knows where he's passing.

Twill is doing fine. What I take out of his first two games is that even though he isn't shooting well, he is still active in doing whatever he can to contribute while he's out there. The shooting will come in time. I wouldn't take too much out of these two games.

I missed the game I was too busy channeling my inner Rip Hamilton on the court.

I need to fix my knee so I can get back on the court. Playing ball is just as important as oxygen in my lungs to me.

You didn't miss much. The ball movement was MUCH better with the offense running through Williams though he did have a lot of turnovers. Williams just doesn't play with any energy or bounce when he's off the ball IMO. No cuts, little movement along the perimeter to offer a better shot or passing angle.....

CDR played low-key today looking to set up his teamates a bit more but he looked very good on the defensive end aside from a mental lapse or two like forgetting to box out. Ager went off due mostly to missed rotations and bad help defense on pick and rolls. CDR stopped his man one on one a few different times and also had excellent awareness coming up with a couple blocks from behind.

It's okay Jeff. We won't make fun of how you channel your inner Mark Madsen, we love you anyway (NO HOMO).

NetsForce wrote:I agree with you for the most part Rich but I still maintain that you can take away things from summer league.

I guess the best way to explain it is this...

I feel like people tend to take summer league performances and forget about the rest of the player's career.

If a historically good shooter goes into SL but puts up a crappy performance it doesn't make sense to say Player X can't shoot. Similarly if Player X is a historically bad shooter puts on great shooting performances saying Player X is an excellent shooter is really jumping the gun.

The concept of sample size should tell us this much.

However if Player X has a very slow release or shoots flat jumpers those are things you can take away from summer league. The way a player shoots a jumper doesn't just drastically change overnight. Similarly there are some instances where you can tell that a player is just athletically outmatched (you don't come to this conclusion just from summer league though, you go back to their college scouting profiles, etc. and see if this was a consistent problem for them)...

You just have to be smart with how you analyze summer league performances.

(In my "initial reaction" posts there are quite a few things you can probably just throw away as they won't be a problem for said players in the regular season due to better coaching, teammates, structure, etc. but I thought I'd include them anyway as those points may be of some interest to anyone who didn't see the game and was curious to how the "main players" performed)

I absolutely loved your analyis Netsforce. As you know... I used to breakdown every player after most games. As that I am not going to watch the SL games this year...I was really happy to see a breakdown that I felt was fair and well rounded in a basketball sense. Most recaps I read that are in the vein of what I used to try to do....are not basketball insight. SO thank you for giving a quality read....an Enetric cookie and an Enetric gold star for you...great job.

As for what you had to say...I agree...SL can bring some key issues to light as long as you take them with a grain of salt. I worry less about shooting %...and more about atheleticm, spacing, defense...understanding...and when shooting...form.

The thing I hate most...is when people look at SL for supposed hidden gems among the non roster guys. How many summers did I have to read about some scrub who had a a hot SL and why we HAD to clear space for this guy or that one. Needle in a damn haystack. I try not to get too down on bad box scores from our drafed guys....or too high for the box scores of the undrafted guys. Watch the level of play, look for little things.

On that note...I expected Hansbrough to have big games here against still inferior comeptition. I am one of those that thinks he is going to be better than the low bar the masses have set for him...but I am really curious to see how much higher. Wont really know until he plays against actual NBA guys. He is strong enough, and polished enough to have great box scores against similar level talent....this isnt the test for a kid like that IMO.
