Your Opinion of Newark?

Post#1 » by elcanis » Tue Jul 6, 2010 5:41 am

I personally don't think it's THAT bad especially in parts of the north ward and in the downtown area, where the Prudential center is.

I dont really think our chances of getting Lebron are that high, but Newark isnt a major deterrent to Lebron, like everyone is saying it is. I mean I know it isnt the greatest city, but people are acting as if you'll be struck by bullets if you step foot in the city. Im from Montclair, but I used to go to school in Newark, i dont really see the big deal about it.

Please if you arent too familiar with the city or havent at least visited in the last couple years, hold your tongue or at least dont say some stereotypical statement about newark (ex: something about muggings or drugs or something).

Meh, I'm from brooklyn..I've seen projects here, and in Staten Island, and in Newark..I used to work for Fedex too so I saw all three areas quite extensively..

Forget about Newark..NJ in general has alot of rural sweet spots that I've grown to love and appreciate coming from an overcrowded and congested area with mixed races..

Not every NBA player wants to be in a city I'm sure, not everyone that was born and raised in a city would want to live in a congested area, like me.

-------

If you have money and cap space...they will come. Just maybe not this season, with new ownership no one knows about, the team moving to brooklyn which could get delayed, but you guys got a good core and with smart management of cap space the next 2-4 seasons, the FA's will come.

A train ride away...Realistically, it depends on the time of a day, during the week or weekend...if you took traffic out of the equation, 20 min...Staten Island is probably is maybe 10min away and you could make it to Brooklyn in 15...

Anyone who talks about Newark as a city, who beat it up, have never been and are living in the past...the area of The Rock has never looked better and the arena is beautiful...basketball will come back to Newark one way or another...

eeeeh i dont think lebron taking a train is a great idea hed be recognized in milliseconds and mauled for pictures and autographs. as for newark, ive lived here my whole life about 5 minutes north from where the prudential center is and its by no means a dangerous place. or at least, no more dangerous than living in manhattan or for LBJ no more dangerous than cleveland. east newark, north newark and the ironbound are all fine. i cant really speak on the other parts because ive never been around there. just stay away from irvington and youll be alright.

the train ride was not meat for LBJ :-? ...unless of course he could get his own personal monorail built right to players entrance..

Took my friends kids to the Rock for the Icecapades last January. Wanted to see the building myself. I thought it was pretty nice. But the surrounding area? not being from there? Yeah...I felt like I was driving through a pretty bad area.

How that effects Lebron? He wont live there...he will work in the Rock 82 nights over the next two years. He will be driven in from Manhattan 7 miles away....and back. But....the impact he could have on that area...could be fantastic. and that might have humanitarian interest for him. Not saying that will be a rason the chose the Nets. I am saying once here...I think he might make some rewarding contribution of his time and energy to an area that only a celebrity like him could make.

In the end.....if Newark were a big negative issue like some say? I dont think we get a meeting.

As a student at Seton Hall, I've been to the Rock for every shu bball game last season. The busses took us through South Orange Ave right down to downtown Newark. That is the only "bad" area in the sense of developing streets and neighborhoods. Once we get into Newark though, the city looks great and is improving every year (I'm going to be a Senior). The area around the arena is great and there are a lot of great restaurants and nice hang out spots around there.

Yeah, i'm not sure what "bad area" you drove through. The only area thats Ghetto is So.Orange ave. or Irvingnton ave. The other roads that lead to the arena, espcially coming from the Parkway or 280, or Turnkine/rt 9 all lead pretty much straight down town which is not bad at all.

You know...I dont recall. I wasnt driving. I dont think we came through the city. I live in South Queens so we would have most likely taken Verazano and then across one of the southern bridges. Which one would have made the most sense? Goethals? Bayone?

yeh you probably hit up the Goethals, took the TNPK North to exit 15W where you exited Rt 280 West ...so it was scary bad? Is that your first time to Newark?

well, there a lot more hell holes in Newark than that...though the Orange St projects getting shut down was huge step recently, and Seth Boyden is probably on its way which would help...

Overall, the downtown area has really cleaned up nicely...From Riverfront stadium to NJPAC to the road renovations on Route 21 and Broad St...

I was born and raised in the City of Newark. To me the city is a city that has potential. Lebron played in Cleveland and that is a dangerous city Brooklyn has crime as well. Don't get me started on Chicago they have over 400 murders a year and people talk about Newark being a bad place.
Shaq owns numerous houses in Newark even his Grandmother was living here when she was alive while he was playing in the NBA. Also his family lived right around the corner from the Orange st projects and he still came to visit those family members.
This is my city and If Lebron comes here that will wonderful.

I spent alot of time in Newark and I was shocked at how nice it is. The downtown area by the arena is very nice. I think that City will turn around soon.

Return to Brooklyn Nets
