Deron got hurt yesterday (aggravated the wrist), and had to be pulled out of the game because of it. They put him back in because our offense went to the $hitter without him out there. I'm not going to put too much stock on Deron's "attitude". From what Utah fans told us, he's always been like that. You know what I did like? The fact that, even though he's been hurt, on a losing team, he's still playing. And the fact that, after he was pulled out and came back in, the first thing he does on defense is give up a HARD foul after a blown assignment by one of our bigs.
It's been awhile since one of our guys, aside from Kris, has given one of those (T-Will maybe?)
I don't get the hate on Brook. After this game? Really? Yeah, he missed the FT. And MAYBE he missed his assignment on defense on the last play (can't tell if it was him or Hump who failed to switch out to Frye). He looked like he didn't make an impact? Yeah, because the offense largely ignored him for most of the first half (part of that was due to Morrow being hot). I'd like to know how many legit touches Brook got in the first half. My guess was not a lot.
Defensively, he's not an anchor. But he's good enough. Nash had that one series where he picked apart that pnr defense with three straight dishes to Gortat, but after that? Brook played some damn good defense on Nash, especially late in the 4th and overtime. Those were plays were Nash would typically hit the dagger, and Brook was very key on stifling all of them.
That being said, if the right deal comes along (looking at you Dwight), I'd gladly ship out Brook. But him playing like this, and aggressively (FINALLY getting 10 boards again) is a good thing. Either he plays well enough to convince that Deron has a #2 here, or he plays well enough that he becomes a major trade chip.
Morrow = Buckets. This guy is going to benefit so much from the presence of Deron. And I agree, I don't know that I trade him for OJ. OJ is more well rounded, but I don't know that the money he'd be commanding would make it worth while when Anthony is only making $4M per. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that Morrow will be the sacrificial lamb used to rid us of Outlaw.
Back to Deron, it's clear he doesn't have confidence in his shot right now. Once he's healthy, this team should be even much better. We just played toe-to-toe against three teams that have won 3 or more games in a row. Both Houston and Phoenix would be playoff teams if they were in the East.
I know, no morale victory...but I'll take it compared to what we've seen in the past. In three games, our team has dished out 24, 27, and 32 assists. Given that we've barely averaged 20 assists per game, and that these guys hasn't had many, if any practice time together yet (except for shootarounds), that is a good improvement.
