Would YOU Waive Farmar?

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Tue Aug 2, 2011 9:43 pm

According to the latest Wiretap of today's ESPN article, our own Jordan Farmar is considering moving overseas during the lockout, to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv. The risk that Jordan faces, like all NBA players under contract, is that they might get their NBA contract waived.

Now, Farmar was a useful acquisition last year, providing an offensive spark off the bench and even starting at times while Devin was DNP'ing. But with the arrival of Deron Williams, his role figures to decrease. Remember, we still have decent, dirt-cheap backup PGs Sundiata Gaines and Ben Uzoh. With somewhere around $16mil in capspace this offseason, the $4mil that we could wipe out by waiving Jordan would raise the number to $20mil. That *could* be the difference between getting one big-time, starting-caliber FA and a middling vet (say, Nene and Jamario Moon), and getting TWO big-time, starting-caliber FAs (Nene and Wilson Chandler, for instance).

So, would YOU cut him if Jordan took a contract overseas? Please give an explanation of your vote. Thanks.

IF it was legally allowed to waive him without it counting towards the cap for the next 2 seasons, then yes, I would waive him, as would everyone else.

He has his positives (no really he does!) but he's a backup PG, I'd waive him in a heartbeat and give whatever scraps of minutes are left behind Deron to Gaines.

I'm not sure what vc4p is saying exactly, but I figured most Nets fans would feel as I do about this issue. He and Morrow were two of the guards I really wanted us to pursue last year, and I'm glad we landed them; but in this particular situation, he may find his stay with Haifa to last a little longer than he expected..

You're kidding right lol?

Yes, I would wave him if it didn't count toward the cap.

Definitely gonna waive him. Gaines would suffice ATM with less than a quarter of Farmar's contract...

Nope, I hate to admit, but I get it now (waive/wave)!

Anyway, it sounds like Jordan has reached an agreement with Haifa; now it's time for our Front Office to rip off the bandage. They might be concerned about a PR hit, but when we sign a starting SF and PF duo with our capspace, all will be forgiven.

One can only pray Travis takes his talents to the South of France.

Well, Jordan Farmar is a 24yo PG of average size, above-average speed, below-average shooting efficiency, and has a fairly versatile skill set. He can rack up assists, but is not as great as his numbers may suggest at commandeering an offense. As a defender, he has always been below-average, IMO, but not horrendous. He can slash, but with his slight frame doesn't always convert those opportunities. His biggest weakness until last year had been his FT shooting, which he improved markedly. To me, he gets better the longer he's in a game. In this way he might be better suited for Maccabi, where he could be THE guy.

- Not a true point guard.
- Tends to over-penetrate and then panic pass, abroad I think this will be less of a problem as he'll be quick enough to get to the rim.
- Very good catch-and-shoot player from three-point range

Thanks alot you guys, really hope he'll make an impact.

Is he good in the passing lanes applying early pressure and stealing the ball etc? our playstyle is very aggressive so it's a downer hearing he's a below avg defender.

We suck at FT as a team so he'll fit right in :D
