Why not? Just because he's old doesn't mean he's not good anymore.
He just averaged a super-efficient 13/11 and had the Suns barely missing a playoff spot in a very competitive West. The Suns had a top 10 offense this year. And that supporting cast was trash.
I just don't see Rondo anywhere close to Nash. The Celtics were the 27th ranked offense in the league this year, with a much better supporting cast than Nash had. And when Rondo missed games, the Celtics didn't miss a beat. When Nash isn't playing...the Suns lose to us.
Rondo plays in a system that heavily inflates assists, and like I've said before, there's no way you can watch Nash/Deron/Paul and then watch Rondo, and then honestly think Rondo is on their level. They legitimately create offensive opportunities out of nowhere, and spoon feed teammates. Most of Rondo's assists come from feeding Pierce or Allen off screens, or hitting KG/Bass on the pick and pop, or waiting until KG gets fantastic post position and then hitting him. That's not Rondo being an elite floor general, that's playing with elite shooters that will get theirs with or without Rondo.
I know I was on the Westbrook bandwagon before, but thinking about it now, why not Nash? What argument is there against him other than the fact that he's old, and like you said, this isn't about what they're going to do 2-3 years from now, it's about currently, and currently, Nash is still an elite PG, top 4 in the league imo.
