Off the top of my head I don't remember any major restricted FA signing a max offer sheet.

I might be wrong on this though.

But as a franchise I wouldn't do it, because if he's worth it, then his previous franchise will match. And once they do this whoever you sign gets the backup-option treatment.

I dunno though, Eric Gordon in your case might be worth the gamble, because he's the kind of player that if healthy would warrant it. But it could end up a bust if he stays injury prone. But I would do it mainly because overpaying EG for 4 years is in my mind still better then putting up 30+ for Wallace at this stage of his career with the playing style that he employs (Crash...)

Then again there comes the capspace management factor. I can almost guarantee that EG and Deron for example will not sign at the same day (except if the Hornets renounce EG's rights which would be beyond stupid) since if that's what it takes to reup Deron he'll wait out the matching period.

And like I said before, what happens if hypothetically at the first day of FA Brook Lopez gets a great offer for say 50/4?

Playing with RFA's is a very risky proposition.

Lopez won't get that sort of offer due to the uncertainty of his foot injury.

There was talk that King had Lopez pencilled in around $8-10m, which frankly would be a complete steal so long as his foot checked out.

There are quite a few good centres in free agency like Hibbert, McGee & Kaman so he has competition for big offers.

If we create extra cap room by moving Morrow & Petro I'd sign Gordon to the max he could get & contact NO about a possible s/t involving Brooks & picks or just whatever it took because Gordon is just that good.

50/4 with 4.5% raises starts at 11.7. So if 8-10 is a steal (which as market forces go I agree with for a big men with the offensive potential of Brook Lopez) then 11.7 is something along the lines of mildly overpaid. Which you would need to do to get a RFA. Don't think it's likely, but if it happens it would throw a monkey wrench in all plans since it would mean that you guys would have to scramble your whole offseason plans within the matching period (3 days) so that a EG aquistion would still work out capwise.

And New Orleans just went through the pain of losing a franchise player (and while Deron isn't gone yet you're certainly experiencing that there is a difference if you provide a star with other great players) because they couldn't pair him with another so I don't think Brooks + picks would be good enough to warrant them leaving Anthony Davis to dry. IF they were to do a s&t they would need more valuable building pieces. Far fetched, but something like Biyombo + #2 would be more like it (and could you imagine that frontcourt? Esp if they take MKG) Jordan might do something like that because he wants a SG that he can teach stuff.
