what do jersey sales have to do with a media circus? jerseys arent purchased by the media.
there is no novelty to it. he is making a statement and the team is helping him do so. clearly there are motivations beyond on court basketball. that doesnt mean it is not a super worthwhile cause, especially when he isnt using up our last roster spot or eating into the DPE.
there is no media circus at all, and there is minimal if no distractions. you want media circus, look at what happened when the jets signed tebow.
this thing was big for a couple games and has already died down.

he is an inconsistent shooter, it was kind of simlar for him before he came to the NBA as well, and likely increased inconsistency now that he isnt starting and the #1 option like he was overseas.
either way, he provides nothing if his shot isnt falling... and even when it is he adds little value elsewhere. ive been super disappointed with him. he has gotten a few chances now and is yet to take advantage of them.

That message has already been sent, has to do nothing with re-signing him for the rest of the season. I'd like to see this team improve with someone better than Collins.Prokorov wrote:DarkXaero wrote:If by the end of Collins 10 day contract, he has 0 points and more fouls than rebounds, what possible justification will there to re sign him?

to help a former player get his message across and make a statement, one thats very important and impactful to the gay community and other athletes who are in the closet.
certainly worth every penny in my book. also shows players that this team cares about its players beyond the basketall court -- good for future free agency

i'd rather keep him on the team for the season, have an openly gay player finish out the year, not just a 10 day thing, it would be a bigger story if we made the playoffs as well.
and again, what does collins have to do with singing someone else? we have an open roster spot and plenty of money to spend to fill it. if collins where taking money/roster spot away that prohbitted us from getting someone else, id be all for dumping him

We could use two roster spots instead of one to improve the team? One for a big who is better than Collins and another for a PG who is better than Marquis Teague.
I'm not sure why you care so much about making Collins into a bigger story. That's some Yormark esque mindset there.

well, the team might not use the 1 roster spot that is open, let alone 2. and if someone was available at PG liked better then teague they would have signed him. its clear the nets are happy where they are at PG. (not that i agree)

its beneficial to the team, the league, and gay players who havent come out in both college and the pros. its good for the game... and im proud the nets are a part of that.

Yeah but everyone expects us to make the playoffs. Even when we were 10-21, everyone called it a slow start. So, there is really no justifying Collins being here when it comes to the playoffs. If we were to win a championship then It would be a big deal for Collins and a true feel good story but we aren't making that happen.
Keeping Collins is basically saying "Look! We are the classy NY franchise that attracts positive media attention", I originally thought there was some form of basketball reasoning behind the Collins signing but he barely got minutes against Portland when it was clear Blatche needed to be benched. He barely got minutes in Denver even when it was garbage time starting from the 3rd quarter. So, what is he here for?
We need a better backup PG and a better defensive minded rebounding big man. There is really no reason to keep Collins for the rest of the season unless we absolutely strike out on those two needs. If we extend Collins before the likes of Ivan Johnson become available that tells you all you need to know about him being here.
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of witnessing history and the Nets being apart of it but I don't want it coming in the way of cleaning up roster deficiencies.

whats wrong with being a classy NY franchise? why does it need to have on-court reasoning behind it? how many 15th men ever play or have an impact? I really dont understand the issues with people being unhappy about not having a 15th man who can make an impact and play heavy rotation minutes. especially when we have an open roster spot and money to spend if we find someone who CAN help us on court.
there are no negatives to having collins on this team for media attention. none. there are plenty of positives.

the team doesnt feel we need an upgrade at PG. thus we dont need a roster spot for one. the team likes who we have and who we have invested in. this isnt a case of choosing collins or a PG. not to mention, if we went out and signed a PG, he wouldnt play. maybe he takes teagues garbage minutes? anderson/thornton would be handling the second unit PG duties even if we signed someone.

its not coming in the way. we have an open roster spot and the DPE

He's not the 15th man as of now. He's one of 13 active players on the roster who could see time with Kidd at the helm. The simple fact is Twin has more of a chance of being a negative on the court with his declining and already limited basketball skillset.

There is nothing wrong with being a classy NY franchise but I don't see why keeping Collins for the entire season is making us look any classier. I don't have any problem signing him for a 10 day but not for the entire season. We can become a classy franchise in many other ways than simply trying to sign a basketball player based off their sexuality or because there is a perception that other franchises don't want to sign him.
the team doesnt feel we need an upgrade at PG. thus we dont need a roster spot for one. the team likes who we have and who we have invested in. this isnt a case of choosing collins or a PG. not to mention, if we went out and signed a PG, he wouldnt play. maybe he takes teagues garbage minutes? anderson/thornton would be handling the second unit PG duties even if we signed someone.
Yeah, we do need a PG.
Last night's bench rotation was Livingston, Thornton, Kirilenko, Teletovic, Blatche/Plumlee. Now, if Livingston picks up 2 fouls again like Portland or he's injured for a few days, we are going to resort to giving Anderson and Teague minutes at PG? When we do that we automatically turn into a complete mess which is what exactly what happened in Portland that sparked that blowout.
Even if that guard that comes in and isn't' going to be in the rotation all the time, you still need to have a capable guard that isn't completely terrible like Teague or out of position and naturally a chucker like Anderson.
its not coming in the way. we have an open roster spot and the DPE
Yeah but again, Ivan Johnson comes in with the DPE and we are still rotating only two real actual point guards. So, we fix a big situation and may not be prepared if something happens like Livingston sprains an ankle or Deron goes down for a day or two.
I just think we need to think of alot of worse case scenarios and address it. Collins being around for good karma and getting in the way of fixing a need is inexcusable, IMO.

thats a criticism of kidd if he is playying him over blatche/KG/Plumlee. just like it wasnt evans fault that PJC played him 30 minutes a night.

longer we keep him the more (positive) exposure we get from it.
Yeah, we do need a PG.
unfortunetly our opinions dont matterLast night's bench rotation was Livingston, Thornton, Kirilenko, Teletovic, Blatche/Plumlee. again, i agree we need a better 3rd point/combo gaurd. the team doesnt share that stanceEven if that guard that comes in and isn't' going to be in the rotation all the time, you still need to have a capable guard that isn't completely terrible like Teague or out of position and naturally a chucker like Anderson.
the organization and kidd like teague, nothing we can do on that. and collins has no impact on it. no collins wouldnt mean we would bring in a PG
Yeah but again, Ivan Johnson comes in with the DPE and we are still rotating only two real actual point guards. So, we fix a big situation and may not be prepared if something happens like Livingston sprains an ankle or Deron goes down for a day or two.

its not getting in the way of fixing things as the team woudlnt add a PG if he wasnt here... and if we DID need to cause of injury we could just as easily realease him... although the team likes teague and would go with him anyhow

It's Evans's and Collins's fault too for sucking, especially when given chances say when KG is resting and/or the bigs are in foul trouble.

you cant blame bad players for being bad. collins hasnt played this year because he wasnt good enough to make someones team/rotation. its not his fault that kidd is playing him when he isnt good.
same with thronton, he has been awful this year. its not his fault he was handed andersons minutes.
thats like trying to fix a leaky pipe i with a plastic fork and then getting mad at the fork

You don't get mad at all for basic things like catching or finishing around the rim?
KG's also out against the Bucks. Pumlee is starting and if he or Blatche stink or get in foul trouble (both of which can very happen), this is the guy that's going in for them. You would not be angry with Collins at all?

no, because he is terrible at both of those things and to expect him to start doing things he has never done seems like an act in futility. thats like getting upset at my 7 year old son for doing a horrible job of fixing a hole in the screen door when its not a task he is capable of and shouldnt be doing in the first place
KG's also out against the Bucks. Pumlee is starting and if he or Blatche stink or get in foul trouble (both of which can very happen), this is the guy that's going in for them. You would not be angry with Collins at all?
no, for 2 reasons:
1) its not cllins fault if plumlee and blatche play poorly
2) we shouldnt be relying on our 4th string center, and if we are it makes little sense to be made at him for not coming through.
4th string centers shouldnt play unless its a desperate situation. and you cant blame your worst players for not pulling you out of desperate situations. we have plenty of players on this team capable of playing rotation minutes. if ti comes to asking collins to do more then he is capable thats on the other guys not doing their job, not him.
and thats not just collins, its the same for like marquis teague as it was for toko and taylor. those guys are all terrible, but im not going to blame them for playing bad when they are bad players who shouldnt be playing in the first place.
if everyone else is doing their job, those guys dont play
