He already criticized Brook a lot after the Twolves game, and he criticized him again a lot last night after the game. It's okay to criticize your player's performance in the media, every once in a while, but if you keep doing it, there's a real risk of alienating and angering the player.

If you look at some all time great coaches, they were masters at team management and managing egos. While not a basketball example, Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United used to protect his players in the media a lot, even though he would go off on them in the locker room.

Lopez has been coddled in varying degrees for 6 years now by 5 coaches... and he hasnt responded positive to any of it. He needs tough love. I love Hollins approach, and if a player cant handle being called out then that isnt the type of player I'd want to go to war with anyway. I want mentally tough guys that can take being called out and have it motivate them.

I dont give a crap if the players get mad Hollins calls them out when they play poor or with poor effort... im mad when i have to watch that crap. these guys are making max money, and hollins doesnt need to cater to their acts. they have long skated with mediocure effort

Exactly. We've sat here season after season watching piss poor efforts and lazy play, now someone is finally in charge that doesn't want to see that garbage on his watch.

Guys are responding. Lopez is playing soft. I hope he gets mad and plays aggressively because then he'll be a factor. He needs to rebound, and he needs to be tough on the inside. Enough is enough

How many times have this team played with no pride or urgency against interior competition? Even in the playoffs against Chicago. Yet, Deron, Joe or Brook didn't seem displeased with it. We heard no frustration coming out of these guys when we were trending downwards with a 10-21 record with a 120 million dollar payroll. Getting booed off the floor.

So, if this is how Joe or Hollins show some type of displeasure for the countless disgraceful performances then so be it. They may not be handling properly but I am glad they are both not happy with a 4-2 record when we should be 6-0.

exactly.... its one thing if these guys are spouting out every day like an idiot like JR Smith. but johnson rarely says anything. I'm glad that Joe isnt pleased after a game where we won, but didnt play great. when was the last time a player showed any kind of real frustration with the level of play? hell we've had games were we lost by 30 and guys are like "it happens on to the next one".

im glad players are developing a high standard of play, and are frustrated if we arent reaching it. I think Joe sees it... that we should be blowing out the magic and wolves, not losing to them or scratching and clawing to beat them while AT HOME.

maybe im off on all that.... but players/coaches calling out bad effort is something ive begged for since we moved to brooklyn, so im happy with it.

It's a dream come true Prok!!! Finally, someone gives a damn, and Deron is playing like he gives a damn

We should be 6-0 and the talk of the league. Not 4-2. this team can and will get better, and we will be a team that no one wants to play in Rd one come May, mark my words. Hollins will have these guys playing like savages

I mean, sometimes it was stupid to do so, but it happened. And I remember that being somewhat of a big deal whenever it happened as well, especially during Brook's AS season. Not many All-Stars are gonna be on the bench during a crucial stretch of the game. I think PJ had to say the same thing at times: Lopez just wasn't working, and Blatche was playing better.

But wasn't Carlesimo actually in the wrong most of the times he did it? I remember he did like in three straight games for no apparent reason and Nets fans were annoyed.

PJ also never followed through... early on he was like "brook cant be posting up 20 feet from the hoop, we cant feed him the ball there"

he was strict on that for like a week and then we didnt hear a peep and nothing changed

I think this proves he was legitimately injured for the last few years. It's no coincidence he looks like a superstar again after first-time surgery.

does 4 games this week, against horrible teams prove anything? he has ALOT to prove imo. good start, but alot to prove.

Its nice to see him play more aggressive, but 4 games isnt much to jump to any conclusions

The two are not necessarily tied together. Just because Joe finally got emotional/vocal, does not necessarily mean he's being a leader.

its the kind of leadership we've missed. guys not being content with mediocrity. being upset after a win because you didnt play well. those are the standards we need and those are standards joe and hollins seem to finally be standing up for.

as far as im concerned anyone on this team who isnt with joe or hollins needs to GTFO and find a new team or sit the bench or whatever

I never said he didn't have anything to prove but it's not like he just decided to move quicker, elevate higher and shoot better. There is a reason why he looks much better.

he isnt shooting any better then last season

he isnt elevating higher, its not like he is dunking like vs the bulls in the playoffs or playing above the rim again

he is playing quicker and more aggressive. i dont know if that hollins influence or health or whatver. all i know is he is playing better and has played crap teams.

So reports out of practice today are Joe is still pissed: said the nets haven't played anyone and they're playing selfish.

I'm happy he's not content with the start. And he's right we haven't really played anyone - nice subtle dig at the Knicks. I really don't think any of our main problems are on the offensive end. The issues have largely been defensively IMO. Letting up 100 to the Celtics through 3 quarters is unacceptable as is allowing 20 points the final half of the 4th quarter against the Timberwolves.

Think this west coast trip will be telling

Dang i love this dude.... another reason to love JJ. glad is holding the team to a high standard and is mimicing alot of thoughts here. 4-2 but we should be 6-0 and we should be awful teams like the magic and wolves.

Also, playing selfish doesnt neccisarily just mean offense/shots... it could mean not competing on D or on the Glass or stuff like that.

I wonder how we'll respond to JJ's comments. Part of me wonders if Hollins is influencing JJ to speak up and play a bigger leadership role. He didn't mention names but saying he shouldn't be having to play the 4 is a little damning to our bigs. Big games and a back to back coming up. Glad we play the Suns on the front end. We have a better chance against them I think.

More specifically, stuff like: Lopez not pressing up on Vucevic because he didn't trust his team to play help defense. Plumlee getting stuck in the paint instead of staying on Channing Frye - the one guy you gameplan for on the Magic. Help guys not digging down and boxing out. I don't think it's explicitly selfish like chucking up 40 shots a game but it shows a lack of team dedicated focus. Not sticking to the game plan.

Of course this is Hollins' doing. He's in Joe's ear, and I'm glad.

Hollins is establishing a culture of leadership and accountability. Joe has brought in, and Deron imo just from his aggressiveness has as well.

Everyone else had better follow suit.

Not sticking to the game plan is selfishness.

This needed to be said. we'll be better off for it

This is Joe's 3rd season with us and this is the first time he's ever spazzed out.

That's a good sign imo.
