Defensive RAPM Released for this season

Post#1 » by Prokorov » Tue Dec 8, 2015 3:13 pm

Hollis-Jefferson: #1 in the NBA among shooting gaurds; 30th in the NBA overall at +2.47
Fantastic, basically the elite defender among SG's as a rookie.

Jack: 30th among point gaurds at -1.06

which is bad but when you compare it to last year its a huge improvment, so props to jack for while not being very good at least digging in more.

Larkin:
11th among point gaurds at -0.21

It is negative but there are only 3 PGs who post a positive DRAPM so it isnt as bad as the number based on position. given his size limitations its nice to see he is holding his own

Bogdanovic: 85th among SG's at -2.35.

Horrible.

Brown: 86th among SG's at -2.36

Horrible, but irrelevant sample size

Johnson: -1.13, 60th among Small forwards

Like jack, not good, but an improvement on last seasons horrid defesnse

Young: -0.28, 83rd among PFs

Pretty bad. but like joe jack/a tad better then last year

Lopez: +1.24, 54th among Centers

not great, and down from last year, but not far off what you would expect

Bargani: -1.55, dead last

one of only 3 centers in the NBA in the negative and the only one who is -1.50 or worse. when factoring in position, he has statiscially, according to DRAPM, been the biggest negative in the league at any position.

So basically:

RHJ - complete ungoldy defensive stud in the making. get well soon.

Larkin - impressive given his limitations, really playing well

Jack - not great but working hard and major improvement

Joe/Thad - poor defensively, but imrpoved on last year

Lopez - right about where he projected to be, but not where we need/want him to be

Bogs - complete dog turd

Brown - incomplete, see me next semester

Bargani - worst defensive player in the league, ZOMG he is so effing bad it hurts my eyeballs

Basically what we expected, hollins has these guys playing hard, jack/thad really digging in to do what they can, RHJ is a stud, and bargs is bargs

Hopefully Reed can solidify himself over Bargs this week. He's off to a good start.

bargs should only play if guys are either injured or nets need offense from bench. trob and reed need to take all his minutes, but i think his hamstring injury will cause him to miss alot of games anyway. bojan should be benched. at least ellington tries more on defense and markel should start and play more. also id like to know if sloan can play 2 guard since bojan and ellington are giving little to nothing.

RHJ is a STUD.

C Tier player imo based off of overall impact alone. Will easily move up into B tier status once the offensive game develops.

I see no reason why RHJ cant develop into a DeRozan type player at the minimum on offense. He has an above average dribble and the quickness to drive, he just needs to be assertive which will come as the game slows down on offense.

you dont? Derozan was a scorer from day 1 as a freshman at USC it was clear the guy could put it in the hoop and had a knack for getting to the FT line. 14 ppg/5FTA per game as a true freshman. Basically as defensively adapt as RHJ is, that was as offensively adapt as derozan was coming out.

I'm not going to pretend to be a big derozan guy, im not, but the guy has been a 20-22 point scorer for 3 years now and is always top 5 in FTA. im really not sure what there is that would indicate he can be a derozan type player on offense.... I mean he is really limited offensively. he would basically need to develop a ton of offensive skills. simple stuff like dribbling with his right hand and shooting, and then there is just a comfort level... like he will get in the lane, and then not try and finsih and pass it back out.

i dont see him having a very high offensive ceiling. which is fine. he can still be an excellent player without being one

sucks, but they would be unwise to rush him back.... which given our past is unlikely to happen anyhow.

Wow........ 10 weeks..? A lot of the times it was his energy that fuelled the other guys... in this Rockets game the rest were able to pick up the energy, but you have to think there will be some bad games where his intensity will not be replaced.

Some of these rankings seem out of whack, for instance, Ibaka is ranked lower than Nowitzki on defense. Harden is 10th overall and third on offense when he is absolutely hurting the Rockets with his bad play.

Overall, Bargnani is better than the second pick in the last draft. Still small samples.

i like that derozan is really good at drawing fouls, getting players in foul trouble, and constantly attacks and drives to basket to make things happen .

Ibaka has never been a good defender, just a great shot blocker. there was like a 50 page thread on the player comparison board on this where it was shown pretty clearly he wasnt a very good defender.

Harden is 10th overall and third on offense when he is absolutely hurting the Rockets with his bad play.

83rd defensively be he is still a stud on offense. his presence really opens so much up. everyone is on their heels with him, and trying not to foul him. He is having a down year.... but his "down year" is still insanely efficient offense: 25 PER 56 TS% The guy kills you on defense and with huslte, but his elite offense still outweights that most nights

Overall, Bargnani is better than the second pick in the last draft. Still small samples.

who is that? parker or russell?

russell is at -1.88 which is worse then Bargs but when you factor in position bargs is MUCH worse. only like 5 guys have a positive defensive RAPM at PG while few C are negative.

So you keep RHJ Larkin Thad and Lopez. Everyone else should be trade bait or let them expire.

Okafor: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/2/sort/RPM/position/9

So Ibaka is seen much the same way as Jordan... I don't know on this one, Ibaka's injury probably cost the Thunder a presence in the finals in 2014. He makes a bigger impact other than the blocks. And in fairness to him, last year he was near the top of DRPM rankings: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/year/2015/sort/DRPM/position/6

Ibaka started the season poorly, but he's still a top tier defender. The PC board was pretty well disproven (there's like 1 guy who thinks Nick Collison is still better than him). That said, RHJ looks great, sorry about the injury.

Yeah, Serge is the key to the defense, and last year's RPM numbers (and eye test) back it up. To add the defense fell apart both times he was hurt, he just hasn't looked right this year. I don't remember the thread exactly you mean, but the same guy has said repeatedly he thinks Serge is overrated and Collison is better, which to most is nonsense lol.
