Don't let reality ruin a good agenda. Marks will be wrongly crucified for this. Just watch. Who knew two organizations would be dumb enough to absorb that much money in non-contending situations? Outsiders certainly didn't see it coming either.

Lol no, I still agree this was the best route to go down even though it didn't work out. Marks did everything he could to make those contracts hard to match. It's not his fault 2 other teams f'd us over.

The moves weren't bad but it compounded the fact that we just traded Young for nothing now.

How did those two teams **** us over? That's the REALITY of Restricted Free Agents. If the players are good enough, most of the times they'll get matched Teams have the right to match and keep their own RFAs. Marks knew the risk he was taking here. To absolve Marks of any blame here is quite frankly delusional.

Yep, we could have easily added Lin to Brook & Thad, and held out for a better trade offer for Thad in the future. And in the meantime, we would have won more games than we will now.

What should he have done instead? Going after RFAs was what everyone said he SHOULD do. And that's what he did. And for the most part, nobody really expected those teams to match.

He traded away Thad Young, yes, but we could have had both Johnson and Crabbe...in which case, we needed that cap space. But it didn't work out. Can't blame him for trying though.

There were plenty of UFAs out there that we could have pursued (most of them were signed within first 2-3 days of FA). I'm really not a fan of going after RFAs because of the risk involved. Before Orlando's Oladipo trade, Fournier was the only RFA I really wanted us to pursue. Jon Leuer was another RFA that I was interested in, but he signed with Pistons early in FA. I think there is a lesson to be learned here for us fans (and our new FO) when it comes to RFAs in free agency.

I was happy with the idea of signing Tyler Johnson because of his all around game and growth potential. I like Crabbe but I wasn't a fan of that contract. Even if we managed to sign those guys, it would still have been a risk and we would still be a long shot to make the playoffs, WHILE committing our future cap space. I'm not saying I'm happy that both of those guys were matched by their respective teams but I think that Marks' strategy was very risky either way.

It's a good thing we traded Thad to get a rookie prospect. Good foresight by the front office.

I would rather miss out on the guys we were targeting than pay guys we didn't really intend on bringing in anyway. Yea, it means we'll be worse and less talented, but it also means Marks isn't completely changing his plan after striking out in free agency. For those who understand what Marks is trying to accomplish, you weren't shocked that we tried to sign Crabbe and TJ. You would've been shocked had the nets signed say Evan Turner because that would mean Marks was abandoning his plan already.

Actually disappointed a bit that Portland matched and Heat did for Johnson as well. Both of them would've had a real shot at being breakout players with you guys next year and showing how good they are. I don't know if they will have a similar chance with those teams.

Yeah, it sucks from the player development perspective.

Question for CBA experts, could the Nets include provisions in the contract regarding how many games the player would start or how many minutes he would play, attaching a big bonus if those aren't met and have their original team match those as well?

I don't think the CBA has those kind of provisions for teams to be able to make.

Shame on Marks by doing the thing that every single GM would do in a rebuilding situation. Acquiring talent for the future.

yeah by reaching for a 2nd rd graded player with a **** ed foot and in the process making a roster that netted the 3rd overall pick (for another team) even worse.

thats not good value any way you spin it.

maybe he read Levert's pleading and begging on the players tribune and it tugged at his heart strings.
