Las Vegas Summer League Notes

Post#1 » by Smitty731 » Sat Jul 16, 2016 3:01 pm

As some of you may know, I was at Las Vegas Summer League this week and had a chance to talk to a lot of people. Unlike Orlando, where you could get a lot of time to chat, Vegas is a little more controlled. I was still able to get a few things from each team. If you want to read the notes, you can find them here:

Brooklyn

1. Chris McCullough is coming along from the torn ACL he suffered. They think he has a chance to be a part of the rotation this year.

2. Isaiah Whitehead should be the backup SG at least and they think he has Jamal Crawford-lite potential as a bench scorer.

3. They are really happy to have Caris LeVert and will let him take his time to get ready to play.

4. After missing out on the RFAs, they pivoted to Phase 2, which was vets on short term deals. They think they'll be competitive and might surprise a lot of people. I won't name the name, but I was told "We'll be better than the Knicks. You can put that in pen."

Atkinson hopes to turn Isaiah Whitehead, the 42nd pick in the NBA Draft out of Seton Hall, into a point guard. Whitehead has struggled with turnovers but Atkinson is happy with his defensive effort.

“It was just normal struggles getting used to the NBA game,” Atkinson said. “He is playing against some pros out there who have experience. I cannot wait to sit down and watch film with him and look at how he can get better. I’m excited to coach him. I love his demeanor and I love how competitive he is.”

Whitehead's a combo guard that coach Kenny wants to turn into more of a point guard. RHJ running the point for a little in summer league helps Rondae with his dribble and decision making (pass the damn ball!) and ultimately the team. Can't have a bunch of black holes on the court.

5. They like getting Andrew Nicholson and Jason Smith, especially for the price they paid.

3. They think Jonathon Simmons can play a big role this year because of his energy and ability to get to the hoop.

1. They are very happy with Jaylen Brown. The thought is that he'll be a long term starter at SF eventually, with the ability to possible defend 1-smaller 4s.

:sigh:

Thanks for the honesty.

I overall like what I saw from everyone, only thing is Rondae still looks like he will not be a factor on offense.

thats not his value anyhow... let him be an elite defender and spark plug energy guy. im fine with that...

offensively its going to take time... and not just 1 offseason after an injury plagued rookie year. the kid is a great athlete but he lacks basic offensive fundamentals. he cant do anything on the right side of the floor. his ball handling and overall comfort with the ball is very low. his finishing is needs work.. or more so his comfort in the paint. to often he passes inside of 5 feet and often for a worse look.

to me his shooting is much less an issue then his ball handling.
