I'd like to think that if the former is less of an issue, the latter will mostly take care of itself, given the hardworking Nets culture.
That said, and given that I was juggling the last couple games, it does look like Caris is still kind of fishing around, figuring out how to best apply his game. Which makes perfect sense to me.
IMO he shouldn't be considered late in his development the way most guys in his situation should. He still has unusually high potential for growth due to all the past missed time.
Probably just preaching to the choir here, but...
I feel you, man, and I was right there with you until the start of this season. I said to myself last summer, "Caris is just scratching the surface of his potential, he has all the tools to become the defender and 3-point shooter we need to complement Kev and Ky." I thought that all of his missed time due to injury, including some offseason training programs, meant that he could continue to develop more than the average 25yo.
But then the season started, and his play showed me that over the summer he had not improved in
ANY of the areas that would complement a star bigger than him. Instead, he had worked on all of the facets of his game that are superfluous and redundant around stars,
almost like he expected to be the alpha on this squad. He's the delta at best. He has regressed defensively, and I dare say his shooting stroke looks worse. He's better from 3, but worse from the FT line, which is usually a stronger indicator of sustainable shooting success.
As I've said elsewhere, I still believe that Caris Levert has 20/5/5 potential. I used to think that he could do it even on a team with two HoFers. Now, I'm very beaarish on that.
