Problem is that there won't be a Josh Smith or Paul Millsap next year.

There is always someone on the block. Always.

Best thing we have going for us is a willingness to absorb salary. Agreed...our asset compensation is weak. But our willingness to eat some 50mil multi year deal for someone way better than Hump is what we have to offer as the rest of the league worries about the LTT. Look at Cuban. Look at the Spurs. They are showing you where the league is going. They are gathering their nuts for winter and worried about tomorrow. Spurs would have added a qualiy player today if they wanted to be buyers and use Jax, picks and prospects. But they are content to let him expire as they look towards the future.

If Proky is really prepared to say screw it and spend while everyone is frugal...it means someone will be there for us.

Its simple supply and demand.

Uh... no.

The Knicks got a bargain on Carmelo because they had all the leverage. Carmelo was becoming a free agent. He indicated he wanted to go to NYC. The Knicks had the cap room to sign him. That resulted in the Nuggets being forced to deal him rather than lose him to NYK for nothing.

The Nets have no cap room in the foreseeable future. They have absolutely no leverage whatsoever. They will not get a star player for scraps if they have no leverage. The best they can get for Hump's expiring contract will be an overpaid veteran who has zero trade value. (i.e. if that veteran had positive trade value, then his team would've been able to trade him for more than just an expiring).

Look around the NBA. See how many overpaid players have long term contracts at $12 million salaries. The ones who are considered amnesty candidates. Those are precisely the kind of players the Nets can expect to receive in exchange for Humph next season. They're certainly not going to get a Carmelo out of Humph.

The only way the Nets can get a "star" player is if one of their young prospects develops into a legitimate asset. But then again... if MarShon or Teletovic become stars, why would the Nets even trade them away at all?

So tired of people not getting this. You dont have to be the team with cap room for a player to have leverage over his current team to deal him where he wants to go in his walk year. There just has to BE a team with cap space. The threat becomes simply I am GONE. I will not stay here. I am going to someone else with cap space.

So you have a choice. If you want the cap space then of course you will let me walk. Denver could have done that. Atl IS DOING that.

Or, the player says...there is ONE team and ONE team only I will verbally commit to extend with. Otherwise I will tell every other interested GM that if they deal for me I am not staying there either.

That is why the Nets with a much better offer didnt deal for Melo. He scared us off by letting us know...you arent the team I want to go to.

Having the actual cap space does absolutely nothing to influence the current team to work a deal with that potential suitor. Its the EXPIRING contract coupled with the player mnimizing the buyers through his agent that does.

Knicks having cap space meant they were getting him one way or the other.

Us not having cap space means if a team DOESNT want to deal with us like ATL today...then we wont get him. But, it doesnt stop the player from making it near impossible for his current team to deal him anywhere else.

I wish more people could see the big picture here!

wasn't jj reddick an alternative to the vc/Ryan Anderson salary dump?

Meaning we could've kept RYan Anderson and added reddick, who at the time wasnt highly thought of

even if love ISNT overrated, how does he really make us contenders? we need defense... elite defense. not kevin love.

Overall I agree with you that we really arent good suitors for Love. But honestly? Tired of the endless we need Defense rants. We have plenty of guys who can play D. Want D...hire a coach committed to D.

I tell you right now...even if we got Dwight...the best defensive big man in the game...we wouldnt be a true contender as long as Miami is healthy.

So lets stop trying to make this about offense or D. The goal is to become the definitive #2 team in the East. Love if we could get him...would do that for us.

It's crazy how often we've had to go to plan C or settle for a bad coach instead of thibs and yet were still like a probable #3seed.

I appreciate where we are, especially coming from where we've been. But I can't help but think how good it could've been with some more luck and shrewd moves along the way

Could've been something like

Wall
Reddick
Melo
Anderson
Dwight

OK where is Linus?

12 pages since the deadline passed and not one post after 10 days of " You guys will see! There IS a GREAT Pumpkin!!!!!"

The deadline has passed and it time to pay up.

So I ask you the same question AGAIN:

enetric wrote:

Let me ask you one thing...

Are you ready to admit that Hump is not a desirable piece at least? That clearly he is viewed by the Hawks as a penalty and that our offer would be greatly improved in their eyes to take back anyone on an expiring contract NOT to have his contract for next season?

Or do you think that the entire sports media, all the GM's around the league and every poster here are still wrong and that Ferry wants to do the Humpty dance?

DWILLoftheGODZ wrote:
We are going to get Josh Smith. Atlanta is trying to get us to blink and throw in more assets.

BK has alot of experience of dealing with these deadline trades from the Dwightmare and the Melodrama. He wont budge. Ferry should already know this since he couldnt get Brooks in the JJ trade.

If it comes down to it, and it seems like it is, Atlanta will take Hump if we cant find a 3rd team. We probably have to add a protected pick.

I dont see the Bucks giving up one of their young players for Smith so at this point we are only bidding against ourselves.

The Suns are a bigger concern. They can offer draft picks and Gortat. But look at Gortat who is a 11/8.5 and Hump can do that.

Even with the Suns pulling out, the Rockets pulling out and the Bucks saying we will give you absolutely nothing....our offer was so bad Ferry DID prefer to pass.

Are you going to man up and own it? That in fact Hump was undesirable? That Marshon Brooks isnt enough to get a GM to eat a 12 mil extra year for a guy you perceive as a negative?

I mean seriously you need to say it and say it without excuses. Pay the piper.

You'll feel better...we'll feel better....then you can have a cookie or a nice Eskimo pie.

The Hawks reportedly rejected a last-minute offer from the Bucks of Beno Udrih, Ekpe Udoh, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and a protected first-round pick for Josh Smith.

Yeah, the Hawks had no intention of trading him unless they got a really, really, really good package back. It was all a bluff.

He can?

We have bigger fish to fry anyway.

We'll get someone interesting next year, I'm confident in that.

Wait, what?

Not getting Smith isn't interesting? Getting a defensive PF next to Lopez's improved defense + an athletic player next to Lopez in pick and roll defense AND a defensive player than could guard Melo, LeBron, Gay, etc

None of those moves make the team better or will be useful against teams we will need to beat. Keep going after Smith.

The Wizards aren't trading Nene. They are a way better team now that Wall is healthy and next year they will look to keep that core of Wall, Beal, Nene, Okafor and try to start with a fresh season. Only way they deal either Nene or Okafor is if the Wizards suck still or another injury holds them back.

Love, Horford are all unrealistic.

But Gortat can and should have been done today. Gortat/Lopez could have been a great frontline. Now, teams will have all sorts of competitive offers for him come draft night.

I think the interesting moves that will be made will be through the role players and free agency. I have no idea if Billy Goat will be a GM by then but It will be wonderful to see how creative he can be in re-signing Blatche, CJ and adding NBA players to our bench instead of d-league scrubs like Stackhouse.

That right there pisses me off. You don't want to pay Smith as a max player but you want a package for him like he's a max player.

We will be right back at it again by draft night.

I don't think Josh Smith can be had. We don't have cap space and don't believe we can S&T because of where the payroll is.

Nets Offered Lopez To Bucks For Ellis
Mar 16, 2012 3:41 PM EDT

Following Milwaukee's acquisition of Monta Ellis, the Nets offered a trade of Brook Lopez, according to Ric Bucher while on KNBR Radio.

The Bucks turned down that trade and decided to keep Ellis.

Ellis is known to be a player Dwight Howard wants to play with.

Which is worse Hammond or Billy?

imagine if he makes that deal and Dwight doesn't get traded here. Imagine.

Yup. He also offered Lopez to the Warriors before they traded for Bogut.

Is it possible at all for us to get below the tax threshold any time soon? It seems to just not be worth it to not be able to do any sign and trades.

While it is possible in theory, in practice, it's not. Deron, Joe Johnson, and Gerald Wallace (three relatively unmovable contracts) make 50 million alone. Add 3.3 million for cap holds (assuming absolutely no other contracts on the roster) and that leaves 20 million for a sign and trade. Where would Brook, Humphries, Evans, Brooks, and Watson go? Because they couldn't be on the Nets if a sign and trade went down.

"I've heard from two sources in the know that the Nets final offer was: Brooks, Humphries, an unprotected first-round pick and the rights to Bojan Bogdanovic, though Brooklyn officials would not confirm. That's not a terrible offer, and it comes with little locked-in long-term cost. But Atlanta is fully within its rights to hold its nose and say "no." The Nets will continue the Humphries drama over the summer, and potentially into next season; flipping an expensive contract for another expensive contract is really the only means they have of improving the roster, beyond nailing a late first-round draft pick."
