Re: 2017 Nets Offseason Thread II
I personally dont get the love for Reddick.
As a 8-12 mil a year sharpshooter who wont embarass himself on defense, HELLZ YEA awesome deal! Perfect championship contender role player.
Now paying him 20+ mil a year for 3-4 years on a rebuilding team when hes like 32..... yea no.... thats a TERRIBLE allocation of salary cap funds for a player that isnt in the long term plan for the team either. Whine about Lin being a non foundational piece of the future and yet you'd give Reddick 20+ mil a year for 3-4 years? I mean cmon now, without CP3/Blake taking up all the attention JJ wouldnt get as many clean looks, now he'll be on a team without as many dynamic threats (one of Lin or DLo will be sitting when Reddick is in).
Doc used Reddick weirdly during his time in LA. I watched a ton of Clipper games as well since i can be a filthy multi team casual fan in LA, but usually in the 1st quarter JJ is the main option as both Blake and DJ set all sortsof crazy ass illegal screens to free up JJ for curl pull up 3s. Doesnt matter if he's hot or not, but after that they essentially ignore JJ, so its funny when u see JJs point scoring its usually done in the 1st quarter.
Thing is in BRK there's no Blake to suck in all the defensive attention. DJ is a lob threat but Blake is the dynamic high/low post attacker that defenses have to key in at all times. JJ had literal free run with the defenses focusing so much of their energy on the superstars. He's simply not gonna be able to replicate his success in BRK, i mean he'll do alright, but for 20+ mil a year i think the team wants more than alright.
Spend the money on a young up and coming big or contract absorptions + picks. Why is this team getting a luxury item player when theyre still in the process of building the team up.

Re: 2017 Nets Offseason Thread II
Redick made some sense prior to the D'Lo trade but he doesn't make that much sense now. D'Lo/LeVert should take up the vast majority of SG minutes.
Maybe the Nets still reach out with a 12m/yr offer or something like that, but I think they'd stop advancing after that point. Redick will probably be looking to get paid as well, since it'll be his last big contract. I highly doubt he'll be coming here at this point.
I have no idea what's going to happen in FA, but I'm guessing there's a solid chance that the Nets are going to try to sign Otto Porter to a huge deal.
Whether it happens or not, I don't expect Porter here. In the end, I think that the Nets will eventually fill up the roster with a few Vets still in their prime, and some Vets that are past their prime (but would be good for the lockerroom).
I could see the braintrust going after these guys :
- Patty Mills
- Johnathan Simmons
- JaMychel Green
- Dante Cunningham
- Patrick Patterson
- Nikola Mirotic
- Ersan Ilysova
- Kyle Korver
- Tony Allen
- Thabo Sefolosha
- Taj Gibson
- Mike Muscala
- Tiago Splitter
Personally, I most want Tony Allen in a mentorship role, as well as Patterson/Ilysova/Cunningham as a stretch PF.

On October 31, 2009, against the Kings, a bat descended onto the court causing a stoppage of play. As the bat flew past, Ginóbili swatted the bat to the ground with his hand. He then carried the creature off the court, earning the applause of the crowd.

nah... there is no way... marks bent over backwards to take care of his guys. he wouldnt decline the option and sign him to the minimum to shed 2 million. makes no sense and is screwing the player.
no chance
Marks takes care of his guys if it doesn't interfere with the team's objective of improving.
He's traded Thad and now Lopez, the latter of the two being beloved by many, if not most, Nets fans and who has reciprocated that desire to remain a Net throughout his time here. If it was simply about making people happy, Thad (Kenny's guy) and Brook would still be here.
KJ had a team option and the Nets are doing what's best for the team by keeping their options open and making sure they have as much money available to spend for acquiring players.
Marks isn't doing anything wrong. I don't think we should take his goodwill nature for granted and just assume he'll always bend over backwards for every player, especially if their contract situation can be an impediment to free agent acquisitions.

Marks has been firm but fair about all of this. It's a business, he constantly says that. Nets probably made a decision and decided to go elsewhere on McDaniels. I would have liked to see more of the guy personally, but I'll trust their judgement.

So methinks they're going to send that $3.4 million with either Booker or Hamilton for cap space or a non-guaranteed contract.
Yeah, I was actually a bit shocked to see that we didn't buy a 2nd rounder in this draft.
But when I read that the $3.4mil can be used in a deal prior to Friday and Marks recently intimated that that could indeed be done, I've been thinking that the money will be packaged with one of the guards or Hamilton for cap space.

And if the Nets strike out, have a roster spot, and KJ hasn't signed with another team, I'm pretty sure he'll be right here.
Players and agents know that when a team has a team option, you're not owed that money. I don't think it's that big of a deal either way.

Reddict is too expensive and his defense also below standard. We already traded Russell which with no defense , if we trade another sg with no defense ,the team will suck again next season. Net's problem is all about defense last season.
Now Mozgoz"s defense is not good , rebound not good. Lin's defense was great before injury, but after injury he was not great again. And after i saw the highlight of Russell"s defense, i am worrying about our defense next season.

yeah. Plus, we have a glut of guards. Lin, Russell, Dinwiddie, LeVert, Whitehead all need time. Kilpatrick might be next to go.
I think we need to invest in small forward. Nothing crazy though. I see no reason to make huge commitments at this point. I'd just like a veteran guy that can knock down threes and play some D.

i think Lin was the best defender on the team and one of the best defensive guards in the league before injury. After injury , his speed was obviously drop and his defensive ability was affected.

Re: 2017 Nets Offseason Thread II
I want that offer sheet to Otto Porter Jr SO BAD. Its a win-win situation for us.
We get matched- Wizards are screwed and out of cap space for long time and stuck with their core. Meaning they will soon be looking for slaary dumps or is just out of picture regarding possible free agents.
We dont get matched - we get a huge young part to our core. 4 positions would be filled with young talent who have all shown huge promise, not just rookies ( D-lo, Levert, Porter jr, RHJ), and all are 24 or younger.
Only bad thing would be that as I understand, if we make a offer sheet on July 1st, we are stuck waiting for it to be matched over a week. With that strangling our cap from negotiating with other potential FA-s .

I think we will dump Hamiltons contract along with 3 mill in cash to someone in the coming days. He doesnt seem to have a place in this team and was very underwhelming.

I'm still really intrigued by Caldwell-Pope. I know some mentioned he could be just another overpaid 3&D player, but I think he'd fit really well here.

What if I told you the Nets would land a top 3 pick for Brook Lopez?

What if I told you the Trailblazers will dump Allen Crabbe to the Nets for Skil & Booker?
What if I told you that the mentorship of Russel & LeVert by Lin & Reddick will work out a lot better than the over-hyped 76ers rookies toiling about?
What if I told you the Nets would still have enough cap flexibility to sign Joe Ingles?
What if I told you the Panda's friend, is actually Morpheous???

Good post, I think it's right on. Porter is the only obvious FA target who'd fit but I agree that it's more likely Washington resigns him or he elects to sign with another team that has cap room. I also agree with your assessment of Reddick, we'd basically be going to a 3 guard lineup, but man would it be awesome to add him offensively. He'd put up 20ppg here with our pace.
A few other things I'd add:
- Seems like the first domino pre-July 1 will be dumping a contract with cash attached to get more flexibility. Hamilton and Nicholson are the 2 that seem to fit, with Hamilton being most likely because it's hard to see anyone taking Nicholson off our hands.
- Also seems like Marks is still open to taking on bad contracts with assets attached. So that could be something to look out for if there are any teams looking to clear space pre-FA (or possibly after FA if we don't use all of our cap room and want to add a 2018 pick along with a contract from a team like Portland)
- In terms of FA targets, some names I'd add to the list above are Joe ingles, Ibaka, Gallinari and James Johnson. If I had to predict 1 signing ahead of FA it would be Ingles because he fits the under the radar shooter who can pass profile. I think Ibaka and Galinari are far less likely, but both are really good fits so if they linger on the market it could make sense for both sides to do a big 1 year deal.J Johnson isn't a perfect fit because he's not a good shooter but he did have a really good year last year.

I kind of like Mirotic, his stock has fallen with the Bulls and had an off-year last year in terms of shooting % but I think he could regain his confidence by starting here.
