written in Jan 2016... things changed....
I'll reiterate, the grade isn't complete til we see what happens next for Caris...
The upside is appealing, the shooting promise looks fantastic and the defensive potential is encouraging however we'll see if the most important element, health, holds up... All that promise is for nothing if the guy is not healthy.
And we drafted a guy with injury concerns and risks, i think every fan has a right to feel concerned.

The intangibles are great.
but what good is any of that upside if his foot is made of goddamn glass and he's in a suit?

Just pray for health. He looks like a stud if he can stay on the court. Fantastic shooter, creator, and a willing passer.
You can come into the league out of college with an injury and have a long healthy career and sometimes it's the healthy ones that become an injury risk later. Look at Bradley Beal.
LeVert could be our Khris Middleton. It's a total steal at 20 barring health. I don't think there is any logic in selecting someone with less upside but better health when that is absolutely unpredictable.
when will he be ready to play.

1 thing I liked about this pick (Whitehead too for that matter) is that these guys are well rounded offensively and good passers. Tough guys who can score, pass, defend are what the Spurs are built on. Obviously they also have a few superior talents which we need to find, but building up some solid wings will be welcomed.
well...can't say I won't be rooting for him now. wow.
my optimism for his current employer however, has all but drained, so you can understand why I'm pessimistic about how things may go.
but i'll be rooting for him. seems like he'll work hard and fit in with the other kids just fine.
lets pray for health.

Dr. O'Mally has said that Caris is on schedule and his foot looks good. He should be ready for Training Camp.

Potentially a lottery talent without the injuries.
edit-- he added he would have been a lottery pick even with just 1 injury. But the other ones killed his stock. Definitely was a buy "low" move.
My Wolverine friend said he'd love to have him on his team. Great kid, great effort, good all around player with no major weaknesses. But he also called him a "career roleplayer"

let's make a compromise... we'll both revisit assessments on McCullough and LeVert until at LEAST december?
also if we're able to score some nice FAs in July we'll have a reason to have some drinks together.

I'm cool with 'Vert now, I thought he was going to be out for months or something. I'm very excited to see him play this fall.
I assume that even though he will not play, he will be with the rest of the young guys and the coaching staff for summer league correct?
both he and whiteside need to attach themselves to RHJ/C-Mac/Kilpatrick/Brown ASAP. Those guys are focused and eat **** and breathe the gym.

Hey, if he can become the next Kerry Kittles, that would be great.
Pretty much every season since Kittles left I've thought "you know who would be perfect to have right now? Kerry Kittles!" There's just never NOT going to be a need for a guy that can catch and shoot and play defense.

LeVert reminds a little bit of Kris Middleton from the Bucks... i think he can a really nice SG/SF for us going forward.

macgyver893 wrote:The injury stuff is definitely concerning... but reading up on him more and watching some of his highlights, I'm not as angry as I was last night. I think this kid could be great for us. I don't necessarily think it was a bad pick. He's shown glimpses of brilliance in college and just got the injury bug. I'll be optimistic and say that he's going to have the motivation to get stronger and he'll be monitored heavily in the NBA.
interesting fact: his lifting partner his freshman year was Trey Burke and then Sophomore year was Nic Stauskus.
I feel the same way, I was more upset since we already have so many SG prospects (Brown, Kilpatrick, Bog, RHJ) unless some of them project to small forward and the injury problem, but after watching the highlights I'm really liking what I'm seeing from him.
-He can dribble and create for teammates,
-Plays defense, in the passing lanes for steals and can block
-Rebounds in traffic and can create offense in transition
- Good shooting range from 3 and consistent
- Athletic enough to make his own shot and can finish above the rim
His play on the court reminds of Penny Hardaway and his shot is a right handed Harden quick jumper. The injury problems are very concerning though, but it is hopeful that a Nets surgeon did the procedure.

jbeachboy wrote:whats full details on his injury history and surgery so we know how bad it is?
There's actually some good info on his wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caris_LeVert
2013-2014
On May 12, LeVert underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot. He was expected to be sidelined for 8–10 weeks, but be available for the team's August trip to play in Europe.[44] LeVert returned to action just before the team's August 15–24 10-day, 4-game trip to Italy.[45][46]
2014-2015
On January 17 against Northwestern, he reinjured the foot that he had had surgery on the prior May and was lost for the season.[71][72][73] At the time of his injury, LeVert led Michigan in scoring (14.9), rebounds (4.9), assists (3.7), steals (1.7) and minutes (35.8).[74] LeVert was on crutches until early March and in a protective walking boot until early April.[75][76]
LeVert had been expected to be a 2015 NBA Draft selection, but following his injury some felt his draft stock was impaired.[77]
2015-2016
LeVert missed the January 2 game against Penn State with a lower left leg injury.[109] At the time, he was the team leader in points, rebounds and assists.[110]
On January 13, LeVert was one of four Big Ten athletes (along with Melo Trimble, Jarrod Uthoff and Denzel Valentine) among the 25 players included in the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch List.[111] On the eve of LeVert's sixth missed game, head coach Beilein finally clarified that LeVert's left leg injury was not related to the two previous left foot stress fractures that LeVert had endured.[112] ......On March 1, the team announced that the injury would end LeVert's season and collegiate career.[121][122] On March 22, LeVert had a third surgical procedure in 22 months performed on his left foot in New York City by specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley.[123] By late April, the draft stock of LeVert had slipped to the second round.[124] According to the Michigan Basketball Twitter feed, he attended graduation in crutches at the end of April.[125][126] He was invited to the May 11–15 NBA Draft Combine.[127][128] While still on crutches at the combine, LeVert clarified that his injury was a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal and that Kevin Durant who has the same agency and used the same doctor had called to offer him encouragement.[129]
With this kid there's both room for caution and optimism. Time will tell.

It's like buying a new car that has engine problems. It makes no sense to trade Thad for this kid.
Thad isnt a superstar but you know what you are getting with him and you know that he is going to outperform his contract.
Levert has to overcome a lot just to be an average player.
the problem with thad is exactly that... you know what you have and what you have isnt what you want from a starting big in todays league.
the trade is more about the cap space and re-investing that 12M into shooters and defenders and probably wings.
