Re: GT: Nets @ Bulls || Friday 2/24/23 || 8:00 PM
To be honest I shut the game off halfway through the 2nd and watched a movie with my kids. I was excited to watch the game but we just didn't have it last night.
Not gonna overreact here, but just know my opinion here -- we still need our alpha dogs. We don't have them yet. We have great bones, great pieces, for a great roster. But we still need dogs here that can take over a game. I'm sorry but a guy like Trae would be excellent here. Marks needs to do some serious fishing in the offseason.
But we were just not ready to play the scrappy Bulls, who can put up a solid fight on offense, after the ASB. I saw pictures of Claxton on IG like somewhere in the Carribean or something... that's fine and all, but come back ready to play. And we weren't. Who are the leaders on this team now? Dinwiddie? Bridges? Expecting new faces to be the lead dudes?
It's gonna take time. I won't overreact. I'm not expecting much out of this season beyond more player development, and JV finding his groove. Maybe he's got to bring in some more veteran staff to help out? Either way, I'm hoping this season we can be a fun play-in tournament team and turn a few heads.
But we need to get more firepower, badly.

This was an effort problem. No one was interested in playing ball last night. Claxton looked disinterested and a lot of players look shook from the trades that rocked the team. You can’t go from being elite and contending to tanking in two months. That’s what we did; Kyrie was again the domino which triggered it, Marks/Tsai deserve huge blame as well. Marks clearly showed again he can’t construct a proper roster or trade for the right pieces. I want Marks tail gone and the roster needs to balance out. I like Bridges, Johnson and Thomas but they are not foundation or star pieces; Nets gotta look at Phoenix, pre KD trade, Boston, Milwaukee. This teams needs two stars to drive the machine. Simmons is not the answer. We lacked wings last year, now there is an abundance. We need to carefully trim that, get a big, and hope we can get two all stars in the next two years

Claxton seems like the rug got pulled out from under him. I doubt he wants to be here anymore
Can't say i blame him.

Some losses are worse than others. Remember last season when the Suns had a 27 point half in game seven in the playoffs against the Mavericks. I'm taking the remainder of the season on a game to game basis. How we respond to this loss will say a lot to who we are as a team.

there can be such a thing as too much depth and random minutes game to game can't help with continuity and rhythm.
It's tough because there are so many rotation caliber players but trying to play everyone doesn't help now or long term. I think there needs to be a clear 8 or 9 for every game.

You can't practice as a team over ASB, and we likely had 4 starters using the break to go back to their previous cities, pack, potentially have to put a house on the market, etc. I'm not surprised they came out flat, though I couldn't imagine they would be that bad.

I watched until the 2nd quarter they just didnt have it. This team needs a guy that can get a bucket, when the shots aren’t falling it will often times look like this.

The worst thing about last night's game was that all my TV shows were reruns. I should have put on a movie, but I kept thinking -- if we can only get it under 30... Doesn't it seem ironic that we looked pretty decent, after the trades, until we had time for practices. Someone should change the "lesson plan", and quickly.
We were so bad I'm having trouble attributing blame. So I am going to do what everyone else does and fall back on my biggest gripe. It seems to me that every time we are getting slaughtered we play smaller than we even usually are. (The absence of Simmons just made it worse.) I've supported Marks, but no one is perfect. I don't know if it's true, but I read that we did not want Christian Wood in the Kyrie trade. I admit to being ignorant of the big picture, but that seemed stupid. And whose to say we had a chance but Mo Bamba did not go for that much before the trade deadline. Maybe it is just temporary, but it looks like Nic is wearing down. Probably nothing would have helped last night. But I think it is beyond ridiculous that we have not obtained even a mediocre big to finish the season. And we claim that we are intent on competing in the playoffs.
I expected some pain when a player like KD left. I think we still have a good foundation and could compete as is. So I do not expect (or maybe it's just hope) that play like last night will be the norm. Crap happens. But I still would seriously check the free agent market for any kind of help. It's still a long wait until we are out of the playoffs, one way or another, and can make a trade.

Excepted. Unfortunate. Depends on coaching if it happens again. Playing hard is the entire point of the roster so allowing high FG% shouldn’t happen often.
Anywho this roster reminds me of the Iggy Denver teams.
Again until 2027 we CAN’T tank. Hopefully the off-season is about additions. Never risk a swap being used(thus never be in the lottery).

Not starting Cam is idiotic.
He is still our best offensive creator by far.
Without him the offense just becomes useless.
DFS can just come off the bench. Or tbh Cam Johnson can come off the bench. Hes been pretty awful lately.

Wait, wot wot?
Practice is categorically forbidden during the break?
Do you know what the full rules are for the situation, because I couldn't find anything online, other than CV19 protocols.

they are going to have games like this when shots arent dropping. the elite defense thing sounds a lot easier in practice than it will be to actually implement.
dfs shouldn't be starting and turning down 2 frp's for him was probably a mistake. whether it's royce cam t or ben when he's healthy, they need to start someone who can make plays. maybe even curry.
dfs' minutes should be at the expense of harris and sharpe. harris is glacial and without a playmaker to get him shots he's a turnover or blow by waiting to happen. and he's not automatic from 3 like curry so im not even sure how much of a shooting difference there is between him and dfs (or yuta for that matter).
just like the knick game it's just 1 bad game. this is a .500 talent team that can maybe do a little bit better if things click or a little bit worse if they dont. hard for things to click midseason with so many new pieces. first adjustment jv needs to realize though is how limited the starters are bc they are too redundant with 3/d wings. that puts too much on dinwiddie.

AFTER the coach is extended under questionable opinion? ...
"Questionable opinion," I'm not sure what that means.
JV did a good job turning things around, and I don't see any harm in the extension.
He's earned at least half to 3/4's of a season next year to see what he can do with a full training camp and a better-tooled roster. Then if you need to dump him, you dump him.
Anyway, sometimes long breaks can work against a team; even good teams.
There's also the fact that Vaughn & the coaches probably had the players do a good amount of drill work and adjustment of philosophy, and sometimes the first few games can be a step back before guys are used to the changes. That's not necessarily the explanation here, but it wouldn't be a surprise.
One game, and you just move on from it.
That said, sucks to have had to watch it, huh?
He was signed through next season
What did he do to bring on another extension through '27?
Wouldn't you want to see progress and growth? Or repeat the Nash mistake n bypass accomplished successful coaches because we're tied down?

With how stubborn JV is, don't expect this to happen anytime soon. In fact, he even doubled down in one interviews that in spite of Cam scoring 40 plus for 3 consecutive games, they lost 2 of 3 of those. This is like throwing him under the bus, as if it's Cam's fault that no one is talented enough to create their own shots.
In as much as I agree that Cam still needs to improve on a lot of things in his game, he's still quite an efficient creator not to be playing much. What frustrates me a lot is for a team that really has not much positive player value, we're wasting a promising 21yo who can at worse, be a valuable trade asset.
At the moment, this team has no clear direction...

He needs to be playing with a star because he's really just a 3 & D player, which is why he fit well with Luka. We have too many of the same players that do the same thing. I would try to start Cam in place of DFS, we need a legit scorer. We can't just play starters thats all defenders and still give up 130 points
Not starting Cam is idiotic.
He is still our best offensive creator by far.
Without him the offense just becomes useless.
DFS can just come off the bench. Or tbh Cam Johnson can come off the bench. Hes been pretty awful lately.
Even if Cam is making mistakes this isn't a Championship contender.
Cam has already shown enough potential to warrant starting.
Plus the current starting lineup sucks.
