Trading the #1 Overall - Who Ya Got?

If we landed the #1 overall pick in this year's draft and you could trade it for any player in the league with the exception of the following: Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Durant, Dwight, who ya got?

Keeping the pick is not an option, you have to trade it for a current player.

Are we ignoring the salary cap implications and the ability to include filler here?

If salary and the cap is irrelevant, the answer for me is Chris Paul (if he's healthy) or Deron Williams.

However, I'd rather have Derrick Rose and $20+ mil in cap space over Deron Williams and losing the ability to sign a top free agent.

I should have thought about that stuff.

I'd say we'll roll with including salary cap implications, but you can include expiring contracts as filler to match salary, so we don't have to eat too much salary.

So the 1st pick salary is around 5 mill, Yi is about 4 mill, Humphries is 3.2 mill. Anyhting beyond 12.2 mill in return we will have to eat into our cap space.

Also, why would you take said player you pick and if you're feeling froggy, how would you build the team around this player(FA signings, further trades, rest of the draft, etc.)?

Stephon Marbury.

Or if he's not available, I'd go after CP3.

Obviously this isn't realistic, but what the heck. First off, I'm not tendering Boone and I'm declining Dooling's option, so I have about $25.5 million in cap space.

Trade with New Orleans:
Pick #1, Yi and Humphries for Chris Paul

No explanation needed here. Paul makes $14.9 million in 2010/11, so the cap damage on this one is only about $2.7 million.

Trade with Miami, Minnesota and Philadelphia
NJ Trades: Devin Harris, CDR and pick #27
NJ Gets: picks Jason Smith, picks 16 and 18

MIA Trades: Michael Beasley, Daquan Cook, pick 18
MIA Gets: Devin Harris and pick #27

MIN Trades: Pick #16
MIN Gets: Michael Beasley and CDR

PHI Trades: Jason Smith
PHI Gets: Daquan Cook

The Nets pick up two draft picks and save about $5.7 million in cap space. Miami gets a legit third option, without doing any real damage to their cap situation and Minnesota uses their cap space to get two talented, though enigmatic youngsters at a discount. For Philly this is a roster-balancing move since the BPA with their lottery pick is likely to be a PF and they already have Brand, Speights, Dalembert and Thaddeous Young.

Draft Picks
16. Xavier Henry
18. Eric Bledsoe
31. Kenneth Faried

Henry is an excellent 3-point shooter with the length to guard SFs. With guys like TWill and Lee on the roster, I'm not concerned about his lack of speed/quickness against SGs. Bledsoe provides depth at the PG spot and has shown he can play as a two-guard. While not known for his shooting, his 3-point percentage was also very good. Faried's future position is a little bit up in the air, but is a hustle player with elite rebounding skills and can block shots. DX believes that he has the lateral quickness to potentially guard small forwards if needed.

At this point I have about $28 million in cap space. Also since LeBron and Wade were not options for the trade question, I'm going to assume neither are willing to sign here despite the presence of Chris Paul.

Free Agents
PF: Carlos Boozer
SG: Joe Johnson

While this is a bit less than Max cap space for these guys. At these prices, both guys wold be getting contracts in excess of $75 million over 5 years and that's assuming you can't work out an s&t with either guy.

I'd also hope to sign a few veteran bigs to fill out the roster, especially up front.

Final Roster
PG: Paul/Bledsoe
SG: Johnson/Lee
SF: TWill/Henry
PF: Boozer/Faried
C: Lopez/Smith

DO WORK??

That was brilliant!

If only you knew Rod Thorn...

I'm fine with this...only we take 16 and 18 and trade up to take Patrick Patterson.

I'd rather do that and take the money we save and some of the last bit of cap space to sign another vet wing player like resigning Jarvis or something.

P.S. Minny makes out like an absolute bandit in that trade by the way.

MIN gets way too much in the deal dj7 outlined, but they're already clogged with PF prospects. I don't see their input as substantial enough, especially when MIA will have tons of capspace to dole out.

The CP3 deal is a no-go for me. If we got the #1, the future is too bright to give up for even him.

You do realze Chris Paul is only 24 years old and isn't even in his prime yet, right?

25 in a few days and has had some serious injury concerns. Not worth the gamble.

I can honestly relate to the injury concerns, but to say he isn't worth the risk, I don't know...

On a side note, I made this thread for fun and out of curiousity to see who people pick to give up such a highly regarded asset/player/prospect in John Wall. I feel there are about 10 correct answers and am wondering if this will turn into a concensus, "Chris Paul it is", pick?

Also, I understand that some would rather keep Wall, but that isn't really the point of this thread.

Figured I might as well respond to some of the comments in this thread.

Yes, Paul's health is a concern. I strongly considered going with Deron Williams for this scenario instead for this reason plus the Boozer/Deron connection. But in the end we're talking a top-5 player when healthy and a PG who has put up numbers that haven't been seen since the glory days of Magic.

As for the Harris trade. I won't deny that Minnesota is getting a heck of a deal here, but let's be honest, they hold a ton of leverage with the cap space here. Plus, while Beasley is talented, take a look at the Trade forum. With his off-the-court issues and status as a tweener, there aren't a ton of suitors, especially if the goal is create the cap space for a 2nd big free agent.

Trade #1 pick for Michael Beasley (homer). Franchise player 25/8 in NJ.

Keeping the pick is not an option, you have to trade it for a current player.

Thats's easy... And you guys should know my answer by now... It's the all time favorite, it's the rights for Rubio and maybe Love or their 2010 pick. LOL!

Anyways, other scenarios could be GSW's Monta Ellis plus Biedrins or their 2010 pick. Or Celtics' Rajon Rondo and Perkins or Ray Allen.

I just like the idea of getting other big Centers like Perkins or an athletic one like Biedrins. Monta is very good and he can shoot. Rondo, on the other hand, is not a shooter but the guy is huge on defense.

Note: Dont count me in with the salaries and the cap space because im too tired and lazy to check it right now. Plus, you know it's not my thing. I prefer the easy way.

A friend of mine actually suggested we should trade it to the Clippers along with Yi for Blake Griffin and there lottery pick...Yeah, I know, he's crazy like that. i told him he should run the Knicks and be the next isaiah Thomas, LOL.

I've heard worse ideas to tell you the truth. I actually think the Nets would say yes to that a lot faster than the Clippers. The other problem is if the Clippers actually get the #8 pick, there is NOBODY there that would actually help us in a need position since we'd be getting Blake. I love Patrick Patterson, but why draft him when we just made the move for Blake. No SF available at that spot is worth it. After Evan Turner and Wes Johnson, the talent level drops. We may as well trade #8 to move down to 15-20 at that point.

But either way, I'm gonna hold on to the #1 pick unless a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) deal falls into our lap like how we landed Vince a few years ago.

I wouldn't be so sure Wes Johnson is not gonna be there at the 8th pick.

Patrick Patterson will be a SF in the NBA imo. SF size and SF range, not sure why he is even listed at PF.

And Aminu, who i'd rather have over the other 2 can be a prototype of a modern SF. Think Melo, Lebron, Durrant. Granted talent level is not the same, but athletic ability is close the rest he can work on.

I would actually rather have the 8th pick then the 3rd pick.

The Clipper deal is not bad, but I'd rather have Wall.

I think the clippers are less likely to do this trade than us..I'd do it in a heart beat.

As a Clippers fan, I would consider that deal.
